A Story About One of My Classmates: Told to My Child Who Starts High School Tomorrow
One of my classmates was always an excellent student. He was in my elementary and middle school classes, and later we both got into the best high school in the county. Our county had a population of about one million, but there were only five elite math and science classes.
In our first year of high school, something happened to his family—his father became seriously ill. During the final exams, my classmate was caught cheating in the morning, and then in the afternoon he was caught again for letting others copy his answers. Soon, the school broadcast announced that his conduct grade was downgraded to “C.” I felt really sad for him.
Not long after, his father passed away. My classmate eventually left school and entered a Daoist temple as a monk. A few years later, he returned home with a young woman—people said the Daoist temple was close to a Buddhist nunnery. They eventually married.
But my classmate also discovered that almost all of his old circle of friends had gone on to university.
I shared his story today with my child, who begins high school tomorrow, to teach four lessons:
- Even the smallest wrongdoing should never be done—honesty is important.
- When others are in difficulty, do your best to help.
- When you see someone make a mistake, try to understand the reasons behind it.
- Success has many paths, but true strength is shown in how you persevere in hard times.
