Los Angeles — Amanda Seyfried Explains Why She Turned Down Gamora in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’
Amanda Seyfried is discussing why she passed on a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The 40-year-old actress previously disclosed that she declined the opportunity to play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, adding that Marvel had not contacted her about another role since her decision.
In a resurfaced interview amid her surprise appearance in a new movie, Seyfried explained why she ultimately rejected the superhero part, which went to Zoe Saldana. Saldana has since returned as the character in four other films.
Why Amanda Seyfried Rejected ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’
During a career retrospective hosted by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Seyfried recalled that she believed taking the role could have a negative impact on her career.
“I think turning down Guardians of the Galaxy was just so obvious to me at the time,” she said. “I’m like, ‘This is not going to be a hit. The tree and the raccoon are talking to each other.’ And I was just like, ‘This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad.’”
Does Amanda Seyfried Regret Passing on Gamora?
Although the film ultimately proved her prediction wrong, Seyfried said she has no regrets about turning down the part.
“I mean, obviously I was wrong. But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have,” she explained.
She also cited practical reasons for avoiding the role, including the time required for makeup and her dislike of performing stunts.
“And I just don’t want to spend all the time in the makeup trailer. I just can’t sit still anyway. And I really don’t like stunts, and I don’t like heights, and I don’t like pretending the entire world. I need something to hold on to.”
Asked whether she would consider appearing in a superhero movie, Seyfried gave a brief response: “No, unless the superhero’s just, you know, walkin’ a lot.”
Seyfried previously said that working on a scene with another person in a realistic setting would have been more rewarding for her.
She described the appeal of “another human, doing human things, talking about real life,” adding that she did not believe she would have been happy accepting the Marvel role.
