HOLLYWOOD — HBO Develops ‘The Birds’ Reboot With Sarah Snook in Lead Role

HBO is moving forward with a limited series adaptation of “The Birds,” featuring Sarah Snook in the lead role, Variety has confirmed.

The upcoming project draws inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film and Daphne du Maurier’s novella of the same title. The project was first reported to be available for acquisition over the summer before securing a home at HBO.

According to the series’ official logline:

“Escaping a bitter custody battle, Myra Massey (Snook) returns home with her young daughter, secretly probing a childhood friend’s suspicious disappearance. With a killer on the loose and personal threats mounting, Myra fights to protect her daughter against a terrifying new menace: vicious, deadly bird attacks inexplicably tied to the crime.”

Tom Spezialy wrote the pilot episode and will serve as an executive producer. David Heyman and Danny Samit will also executive produce for Heyday Television. Snook will take on executive producing duties in addition to starring, while Jennifer Gabler Rawlings is also attached as an executive producer.

HBO will co-produce the series with Universal Global Television. Universal Pictures and the du Maurier estate control the rights to “The Birds.”

Du Maurier’s original story was published in 1952, followed by Hitchcock’s film adaptation in 1963. The movie has since established itself as a landmark work in the horror genre.

The series marks Snook’s return to HBO, where she became widely recognized for her performance across four seasons of the network’s acclaimed drama “Succession.” Her work on the show earned her three Emmy nominations, including one win, as well as two Golden Globe awards.

The project also continues her relationship with Universal. Snook recently starred in Peacock’s series “All Her Fault,” a performance that earned her another Emmy nomination.

Spezialy has previously worked with HBO on “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers.” Heyman is also serving as an executive producer on the network’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” series, whose first season is scheduled to debut this Christmas.

Snook is represented by UTA, Omni Artists, Shanahan Management and Hansen Jacobson Teller. Spezialy is represented by WME, Manage-ment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman, while Heyday Television is represented by WME and Goodman Genow.

Deadline was the first to report the development of the series.
