Hollywood — Joey King Lands Leading Roles in Two New Sci-Fi Films, ‘Safe Space’ and ‘Almost You’
Actress Joey King has secured roles in two upcoming science-fiction movies, with details about their storylines and supporting casts now emerging.
The 27-year-old Emmy-nominated actress will headline two projects announced this week, including an unconventional alien romance comedy and a film exploring the emotional consequences of artificial intelligence.
King will appear alongside LaKeith Stanfield in Safe Space, an upcoming sci-fi romantic comedy that takes a provocative approach to the subjects of love and relationships.
According to the film’s synopsis, the story centers on Sherrie, played by King, an intelligent yet insecure scientist who ends a toxic relationship with a colleague. However, her attempt to move on leads her into what becomes the galaxy’s most toxic relationship with a handsome alien portrayed by Stanfield.
Director Gillian Wallace Horvat described the project as a satirical exploration of sex and love. In a statement, she praised the two actors’ collaboration, saying their work together had been an extraordinary creative realization of the script. She also highlighted their remarkable chemistry, expressing confidence that their performances would deliver something revelatory for audiences.
Safe Space is currently seeking financing, with production expected to begin in the second quarter of 2027 in the U.S. Additional casting is also underway.
King’s second project is Almost You, a science-fiction comedy in which she will share the screen with James McAvoy and Juno Temple.
The movie follows Phoebe, a brilliant robotics engineer dealing with the death of her younger sister, Edie. According to the synopsis, Phoebe breaks the technology company’s protocols by using years of messages, videos and social media posts to develop a lifelike artificial intelligence version of her sister.
The creation initially provides Phoebe with happiness and emotional comfort. However, her invention eventually confronts her with a difficult moral dilemma: whether bringing someone back through technology is necessarily the right thing to do.
Director Matt Lipsey expressed his enthusiasm for the project in a statement, describing it as a film that feels particularly relevant to the present day rather than simply offering a vision of the future.
He added that Temple, King and McAvoy would take audiences through an emotional experience, making them laugh before breaking their hearts and finding humor in the experience once again.
Production on Almost You is already underway in Glasgow.
Meanwhile, King was previously reported to be in discussions to star in another upcoming movie earlier this year. In January 2026, news emerged that she was in talks to take on a role in a boxing film titled Bambo, which is being directed by Natasha Lyonne.
