A Michigan grocery stocker whose emotional confrontation with an online prankster attracted millions of viewers has thanked supporters after an internet fundraising campaign raised more than $500,000 to help him provide for his family.
The worker, identified publicly as Walt Z, was filmed stocking Red Baron frozen pizzas at a grocery store when a social media personality approached him and pretended to steal money from his phone. What began as an attempt to produce a humorous video became a widely shared account of the financial pressures facing a working father of four.
As of Friday, Oct. 30, the GoFundMe campaign established on Walt’s behalf had collected a reported $502,667, far exceeding its original fundraising goal.
Walt responded with a statement thanking donors for their generosity and explaining that the unexpected attention had been overwhelming for his family.
“I wanted to take a moment to personally thank everyone who has donated, shared this fundraiser, or left a kind message. The kindness and encouragement you’ve shown me and my family have meant more than I can put into words,” he wrote.
“My family and I are doing well, and I’m grateful to have supportive people around me. I’ve been keeping things private to protect my family’s privacy, and I appreciate everyone respecting that.”
The video that prompted the fundraising effort was recorded in August at a grocery store in White Lake, Michigan, according to Red Baron’s parent company, Schwan’s Company.
In the recording, the prankster approached Walt while he was stocking a freezer and asked him for the time. When Walt checked his phone, the individual moved another device close to it and played a sound resembling an Apple Pay transaction, falsely suggesting that he had transferred $10 from Walt’s account.
The prankster then told the employee that he had taken his money.
Walt initially appeared confused before growing visibly frustrated as the individual continued filming. The worker explained that he was already running behind schedule, had financial obligations and needed to complete additional deliveries.
“I don’t have time for this. My life is hard enough as it is,” Walt said during the confrontation.
“You’re probably making money off this. I can’t pay my mortgage, and I got four kids at home.”
Walt also explained that he had already worked beyond his scheduled hours and needed to begin another demanding workday early the following morning.
Rather than finding the encounter amusing, many viewers criticized the prankster for targeting an employee who was simply trying to complete his work.
The video spread rapidly across X, Instagram and other social media platforms, drawing millions of views and prompting widespread expressions of sympathy for Walt.
The original account that posted the prank subsequently removed the video and was deactivated following criticism.
As the recording continued circulating, a social media user identified as Luke Oakenshield organized an online fundraiser intended to provide financial assistance to Walt and his family.
The campaign initially sought a relatively modest amount but quickly attracted thousands of donations as viewers shared the recording and encouraged others to contribute.
Oakenshield described the purpose of the fundraiser as helping a working individual who had been placed in an uncomfortable situation for online entertainment.
“This fundraiser is about standing up for a working person who is busting their butt and should not have to fear losing stability because someone wanted content and clicks,” he wrote.
The organizer subsequently located Walt and confirmed his identity through a video conversation with the employee and his partner.
In an update, Oakenshield said Walt was deeply moved by the public response.
“Walt Z out of Michigan sends a heartfelt thank you, and is absolutely blown away by how much people have cared over this,” Oakenshield wrote.
“They are requesting privacy, and GoFundMe is taking the lead in transferring all of this to him. You’re all Rockstars, and it shows.”
According to CBS News Detroit’s coverage of the fundraiser, contributions ranged from relatively small individual donations to gifts of as much as $30,000. The fundraising total passed $400,000 by Friday morning before continuing beyond the half-million-dollar mark.
The outpouring of support also prompted a public response from Red Baron.
Schwan’s Company confirmed that the incident occurred in August and said it had contacted Walt after becoming aware of the recording.
“We are aware of the video circulating on social media involving one of our direct store delivery employees during an incident that occurred in August,” a company spokesperson said.
“Following the incident, we connected directly with our team member to check on his well-being, and we continue to offer our support. We are pleased to share that he is doing well and remains a valued member of our team.”
The company also addressed concerns about Walt’s employment through a brief social media statement.
“He’s still here. He’s got a fan club. Including us,” Red Baron posted.
The company’s response reassured supporters who had expressed concerns that Walt’s angry reaction to the prank could jeopardize his job.
Meanwhile, the fundraising campaign continued gaining attention, bringing renewed scrutiny to social media personalities who create videos by provoking strangers in public places.
Walt’s situation attracted particular attention because his frustration exposed the financial and personal responsibilities he was carrying while working long hours to support his family.
The organizer’s decision to establish the fundraiser also generated interest in his personal circumstances. Subsequent reporting identified Oakenshield as a homeless military veteran living out of his vehicle. Another fundraising effort was established to assist him after supporters learned about his situation.
According to Dexerto’s Oct. 30 report, Oakenshield said he had endured criticism while attempting to locate Walt but remained determined to ensure that the money reached its intended recipient.
Walt, meanwhile, indicated that he was considering whether to speak publicly about the experience beyond his written statement.
“I’ve also received a lot of interview requests. Being in the spotlight isn’t something I would normally seek out, but I’m considering sharing my story. Before making that decision, I want to make sure it’s with people who will treat me and my family with care and respect our privacy.”
He closed by expressing appreciation for supporters whose messages he had not been able to acknowledge individually.
“Please know that even if I haven’t responded to your message or comment, your support has made a difference. From me and my family, thank you.”
The campaign’s reported $502,667 total represents money donated or pledged through GoFundMe rather than confirmation that Walt has already received the full amount. Organizers have said the platform is coordinating the transfer of funds directly to him.
What began as a confrontation recorded for social media attention has resulted in substantial financial support for a Michigan family, with thousands of contributors responding to the worker’s concerns about his mortgage, his children and the demands of supporting his household.
