Alright, today you've learned how to greet Chinese people.
Now, do you know when to use 你好 and when to use 您好?
In our next lesson, you will learn how to say how are you and how to respond.
I will see you in lesson 2. 再見!
Hi, everyone. Welcome to the first lesson of Everyday Chinese.
This is Joyce.
I believe you've heard many Chinese people saying 你好 in various occasions.
But can you understand it if Chinese people say it with different accents?
Or can you use the saying 你好 to greet different people or use it in different occasions?
If no, do we have any other words for hello?
Now let's discover the answer.
First, listen to today's conversations.
The Chinese word for hello is 你好.
Literally means you're good. 你 means you. 好 means good.
So when you say 你好 to greet people, you are actually saying you're good.
Now read after me.
You're good.
You may find that the way they pronounce 你好 varies from person to person.
In fact, in the audio which you've heard just now,
你好 is pronounced by people from 5 different provinces of China
whose ages include as young as 7 years old to 50 years old.
So in daily conversation, the Chinese accents vary.
But this is real-life Mandarin which I want to show you in our lesson.
But what if you meet an elderly person or a person who is senior to you?
You should say
The pinyin of 您 is spelt n-i-n.
n-i-n-n-i-n
Distinguish it with 你 whose pinyin is n-i-n-i-n-i.
The word 您 is a polite form of 你.
And 您 is used to address the elderly person or your senior,
such as your boss or client whom you want to show more respect to.
Now listen and compare.
你好!
您好!
你好!
您好!
你好!
您好!
你好!
您好!
