Hello everyone, welcome back to my channel. Gerald here from Studio Ploy.
Metro Manila is in lockdown again and since no makeovers are allowed during ECQ or MECQ,
I thought of creating some fun decor DIY to make this waiting time extra worthwhile.
I challenged myself in creating accessories or items from old stuff that I currently have at
home and transform them into expensive looking interesting pieces of home decor
na mid-century vintage inspired. So without further ado, let's go ahead and jump into our
first DIY project. For our first project, we are going to recreate this interesting planter na
tinawag kong nipok pa. I have view of this plastic planter that we will make as our base,
some used craft papers, scissors and masking tape, air dry clay, and excess latex paint in white.
This is actually fun and easy that we're just gonna wrap around the papers and masking tape
over the plastic planter. The idea here is to make a rounded shape planter. We repeat the same
process all over, concentrating mostly on the middle part until we achieve a more circular
shape pot. What I'm trying to do here is to make the mouth a bit thicker so it would appear that
it's really made of ceramic pag natapos na. I thought of sealing the bottom part with
hot glue para hindi siya basta mapasok ng water and also to help it adhere to the plastic pot,
then cover it again with masking tape to make it look seamless.
Then we set it aside to make our mini spikes.
And to create the spiky or hershey looking element of our planter,
I'll be using this air dry clay to create mini chocolate kisses.
There is no specific size for it, tinansya ko lang based sa laki ng ating planter.
I also estimated kung ilan ang gagawin based on the size
of the spikes. Initially 12 per layer with 4 layers totaling to 48 pieces.
Then I let it dry overnight.
Once fully dry, I then start sa pagditikit using hot glue
from the top part. I initially made 4 creating an equal space between them
For the second to fourth layer, it will be easy since ilalagay lang natin sya in between or
alternating each other. Supposedly after natin mailagay yung mini kisses clay or yung spikes,
dapat ipipainta natin sya but I noticed na medyo malambot ang part ng paper and masking tape
and since we have an excess of the cement finish, inaplayan ko muna ito sya ng 2 coats as our
Then I let it dry for 2 to 3 hours.
Pag tuyo na yung cement finish mixture, I then apply white latex paint in white on white shade
with a little baking soda for that ceramic looking finish.
Make sure to properly cover lalo na yung submarine connection part ng spikes
para ma-fill in natin if there are still gaps to make it look more seamless.
For the second coat, I decided to apply the paint in a tapping manner to create texture
and for it to have this handmade ceramic look.
I let it dry for 2 to 3 hours. After then, we style it with some faux plants.
For sure photos or some succulents will look perfect sa planter na ito.
And that finishes off our nipple planter na sobrang eye-catching at sakto for those
And I think you'll see this sa susunod nating makeover project at bagay siya mismo sa theme.
Moving on to our second project is this molecular-inspired very mid-century-ish
sculpture. For the tools and materials, we only need wooden stick dowels, air-dry clay,
cutter and exacto knife, glue gun and stick, and satin black spray paint.
I have no specific or exact scale for this kaya estimated lang ang length ng dowels and random
lang siya. Though initially sinukat ko yung haba ng dowels but that's just for me to have an idea
I started creating a triangle by connecting the dowels using hot glue
then took pyramid para maging base ng ating sculpture. Then I extended outward to form
a trapezoid with another part then continuously sinusupport lang natin each member to form
another shape until such time na nakuha ko na yung gusto kong shape niya. To make it look more
aesthetically interesting and for it to have a different dimension on the inner part
and also as a support member I added this connection in the middle part to make it more
stable. I then removed those excess hot glue para malinis siya in preparation for our next step.
I sliced the clay thinly so I could easily wrap it around the joints and to easily form it into
our desired ball shape. I decided to cover the joints with clay and to form it like sort of
ball connection in varied diameters. This part is inspired by Imscote rack to create that mid
century vibe. To keep it balanced most of the bigger clay balls are on the main frame and the
smaller ones sa ibang joints and other secondary member frames para maging organic looking.
Then I let the clay dry overnight. Before the last step may nakita akong nail pile kaya narefine ko
muna yung mga clay to make it more smooth and circular na parang ball like. For the final step
we are going to paint the whole sculpture in black and for that modern look I went for
satin finish. I made three full coats of this black spray paint then let it dry for at least
an hour or two. I super like the outcome of this molecular sculpture that it's very flexible and
it would fit in a lot of styles. May it be mid-century minimalist or any style I think babagay siya.
For our third and final project and my favorite is this vintage pleated lamp.
For the tools and materials I have this vase na bili ko from the Beaton Arcade,
canson montval paper, some wooden stick dowels, metal ring binder,
paklay, ruler and double adhesive tape, cutter and exacto knife, scissors, glue gun and stick,
and lastly a paper punch. The first thing I did is to check on how big of a shade would fit so
it won't look awkward if it's too small or too big for the vase. I'm gonna be using this canson
montval paper for our shade. Ito yung ginagamit kong paper for water and acrylic paintings.
Para sa lapad ng shade na gagawin I decided to go for a 10 inch width na sakto yung paper size
natin so we also maximize the paper na less ang excess. For the pleated part, one inch yung una
ginawa but then I decided to just follow the rulers width para mas mabilis and meron na tayong
pattern. To make the pleats I sharpen one edge of a dowel and make it as our tool for scoring the
papers so it would be easier to fold and for it to have a more refined lines. Using the same ruler
and our improvised scoring I then go ahead and score it with our ruler as our guide.
I did the same process with the other half of the paper.
Next step is to fold the paper back and forth to create the pleats.
And to make the line more refined I put a little pressure using the metal cutter
Then I connected the two pleated paper using a double-sided tape to make it as one piece.
What I did here is paunti-unti lang yung pagbubutas since di kaya ng isahan
ng puncher natin dahil masyadong makapal yung paper. I then inserted the ring on the punch hole
pero looking at it, masyado syang maliit kaya I decided to replace it with a tie wire instead
kasi wala akong mahanap na bigger size nito. I patterned the size of our improvised ring
to this little planter.
And since medyo manipis ang tie wire, I covered it with masking tape para maging clean din ang look
niya. After, I conjoined each side of the pleated paper using again a double-sided tape to finally
make the actual shade. I was supposed to put an actual E27 light kung saan-sana natin i-attach
ang ating pinaka-frame but yung meron ako hindi compatible for lampshade so I decided to improvise
again using some wooden stick dowels and this little hook na excess nung ginawa natin before
mapagdikit natin to make the frame.
For our light source, since di nga natin na gamit yung E27, I have this backlight na battery
For now, I'm
And there you go, our vintage-inspired pleated lamp.
And there you go guys, that finishes up our mid-century vintage-inspired
home decor DIY. If you have any questions or comments, make sure to drop me a line in the
comment section below. I would also love to know which among the three projects interests you the
most. Thank you guys so much for watching. Hopefully, the situation gets better soon.
Until the next one, God bless and stay safe.
