Mermaids are real, undeniable evidence.
Nowadays, scientists have discovered many corpses of mermaids around the world.
Many people even accidentally captured them on camera.
Here are some videos of mermaid encounters.
So, is the mermaid real?
Today, we will take you on a historical tour to the most famous mermaid sightings in the world
and have a glance at some of their corpses.
In Egypt, archaeologists discovered images of aquatic humanoids
during the Stone Age or Paleolithic Age in some caves,
which depicted a strange species hunting fish underwater.
Their upper body was like a human's, but they had tails like fish.
Nearby, archaeologists also found drawings
detailing a battle for fishing areas between humans and mermaids.
These drawings, to some extent, have strengthened the belief in the existence of mermaids.
What's more, in the 1st century, in the book Natural History,
Pliny the Elder mentioned a French soldier wrote to Emperor Augustus
about a considerable number of sea nymphs found dead on the beach.
They were women with rough bodies, covered in fish fins.
They often ride dolphins, sea monsters, or sea horses in the ocean.
In the 5th century, in the book Physiologus,
written or compiled in Greek by an unknown author,
described the nature of the mermaid as follows.
In the sea there are many marvels.
The mermaid is like a maiden, and breast and body she is thus joined.
From the navel downward she is not like a maid,
but a fish very certainly with sprouted fins.
This marvel dwells in an unstable place where the water subsides.
She sinks ships and causes suffering.
She sings sweetly, this siren, and has many voices, many and resonant,
but they are very dangerous.
Sailors forget their steering because of her singing.
They slumber and sleep and wake too late,
and the ships sink in a whirlpool and cannot surface anymore.
But wise and weary men are able to return,
often they escape with all the strength they have.
In the middle of the 13th century, there was a book called The King's Mirror.
The book described a creature found on the coast of Greenland.
This appears to have the form of a woman, from the waist upward,
for it has large nipples on its breast like a woman,
long hands and heavy hair,
and its neck and head are formed in every respect like those of a human being.
The monster is said to have large hands, and its fingers are not parted,
but bound together by a web like that which joins the toes of waterfowls.
Below the waistline, it has the shape of a fish with scales and tails and fins.
It rarely appears except before violent storms.
Its behavior is often somewhat like this.
It will plunge into the waves and will always reappear with fish in its hands.
The monster is described as having a large and terrifying face,
a sloping forehead and wide brows, a large mouth and wrinkled cheeks.
But if it eats the fishes or throws them into the sea away from the ship,
the crews have good hopes that their lives will be spared,
even though they should meet severe storms.
In addition to archaeological findings and records,
there have been many mermaid encounters throughout human history,
including some famous persons such as Christopher Columbus and William Shakespeare.
In the Dominican Republic, while searching for a shortcut to India,
Christopher Columbus stumbled upon the Caribbean islands.
In January 1493, he wrote in his diary that he had seen three mermaids.
They were as beautiful as portrayed in the pictures, only their faces looked like humans.
His whole crew were absolutely convinced that they had witnessed the mythical creature.
In 1590, William Shakespeare wrote the classic work Midsummer Night's Dream.
There was a passage implying the sighting of mermaids.
uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath that the rude sea grew civil at her song
and certain stars shot madly from their spheres to hear the sea maid's music.
Researchers believe that William Shakespeare's play was not solely out of his imagination,
but most likely he actually heard the beautiful voice of the mermaid,
as later on, in some of his texts, he repeatedly mentioned that incident.
In 1608, Henry Hudson explored the northern coast of Norway.
He notated in his logbook that a few of his crew had spotted a mermaid
swimming close to the ship's side looking up at them.
The sailors claimed that from the navel up, her back and breasts were like a woman's.
But when she dove underwater, they saw her tail, which looked like the tail of a porpoise.
Moreover, they were as tall as men on board.
With fair skin and long black hair, their tails did look like a dolphin or a mackerel.
In the 16th to the 19th century, there was a widely known legend in Japan
about a creature named Ningyo, Gyojin, Hangyojin, which means fish man.
These creatures were similar to mermaids in Western culture,
though they have a huge difference in appearance.
In most depictions, the Japanese mermaids looked rather hideous.
The head can be of a person, or of an animal, or even of a monster.
If the head is human-like, their appearance still looks very deformed with a horn,
sharp shark-like teeth, and even fangs.
The first recorded sighting of a Japanese mermaid dates back to 619,
during the reign of Emperor Suko.
A mermaid was captured alive in Japanese waters and presented to the emperor.
It was then kept in a makeshift glass tank for a special exhibition in the palace.
Many Japanese sailors also encountered mermaids.
It happened so commonly that they considered it a part of their voyage.
The mermaids often swam along their ships and tried to steal some seafood.
Even some Western explorers have encountered mermaids in the waters of Japan.
In 1610, an English captain claimed to have seen a mermaid from a pier at Sentojonzu port.
The creature was swimming leisurely in the nearby waters
and had come quite close to the dock where the captain was watching in awe.
Other sea merchants from the West also recorded numerous similar incidents.
Some tried to avoid mermaids because they considered them as a sign of bad luck.
One of the most well-documented mermaid sightings occurred during World War II,
when Japanese soldiers set up a surveillance team on Indonesia's Kay Islands.
During that time, some members reported seeing a small figure lurking in the water.
It had a lot of spines on its neck, and its head and mouth were like a carp's.
This mermaid often roamed in the lagoons and near the coast of the Kay Islands.
Bewildered by what they saw, the soldiers asked the locals
and learned that this mythical creature was known as the Orang Ikan, or mermaid.
Once, the locals caught this mermaid and invited Sergeant Taro Horiba to see.
Upon reaching the village, the sergeant entered the village headman's house
and found an aquatic animal sprawled on the floor.
Mr. Horiba was confused and shocked by what he was witnessing
and asked zoologists to investigate after the war ended.
However, no one believed his story.
On July 2, 1991, Singapore's United Daily News published a report
titled Mermaid Fossils Found 12,000 Years Ago on the Coast of Yugoslavia.
It said,
Scientists have recently discovered the world's first complete mermaid fossil,
confirming that this type of fossil was only found in the past.
The animals that appear in fairy tales have indeed existed in the real world.
The fossil was found on the coast of Yugoslavia, Croatia.
The fossil is very well preserved,
and it can be clearly seen that this animal has sharp teeth and strong jaws,
enough to tear meat and bone and kill its prey.
This animal is female.
It appeared on the nearby coast about 12,000 years ago.
Dr. Beliorgani is an archaeologist from California, USA.
He has worked in the waters where mermaids appeared for four years.
He said,
It was buried alive during an underwater landslide.
Then it was protected by the surrounding limestone and slowly turned into fossil.
The fossils show that the mermaid is 160 centimeters tall,
resembling a human from the waist up.
With a well-developed head and a fairly large brain,
its hands have strong claws,
and its eyes are the same as those of other fishes.
In 2008, a mermaid named Caiman shocked the public of South Africa.
At the time, a group of friends were camping near the river.
As they heard the sound of tail wagging and thrashing about in the water,
when the group went on a search, they found a woman in the water.
This woman has a pale white complexion and long black hair.
Her milky white skin makes her body almost glow.
The most shocking feature was a reddish shine in her eyes.
Another witness said the mermaid gave off a grieving sound, as if she was crying.
After a moment, the mermaid disappeared into the murky water.
Some people hold the Caiman responsible for drownings in the river,
believing it traps you with objects your heart desires.
In August 2009, on the beach of Kiryat Yam, Israel,
people occasionally caught sight of a female mermaid jumping very high out of the water,
performing beautiful acrobatics before diving back into the sea.
Local resident Shlomo Cohen recalled seeing a woman lying on a rock while he strolled on the beach.
At first, Cohen and his friends thought it was a beach man lying in the sun.
When they approached, the woman immediately jumped into the water and disappeared.
They were astounded to see that this woman had a fishtail.
That news made many domestic and foreign tourists flock to this small town,
and two American tourists have filmed a video of a creature with a fishtail lying on a rock.
When people came, it quickly jumped into the water.
The video was posted on YouTube and has attracted millions of views.
The local government has offered a reward of US$1 million
for anyone who can provide undeniable proof of the existence of mermaids.
Mermaid's Remains
Not only legends of mermaid encounters were recorded,
some mermaid's remains have been kept intact till this day.
Legend has it that, on April 14, 1222,
a mermaid was washed up on the shores of Hakata Bay, Kyushu Island, Japan.
A shaman came to see and proclaimed the mermaid's body a good omen for the nation.
As a result, its bones were buried at Yukimido Shrine, also known as Ryuguji Temple,
which is the undersea palace of the Dragon King, in Japanese folklore.
During the Edo period, between 1772 and 1781,
the fishman bones at this temple were excavated.
At present, six pieces of mermaid bones are still worshipped here.
Ryuguji Temple is not the only place in Japan that houses the remains of mermaids.
Another shrine, Tenshou Kyushu Shrine in Fujinomiya City, near Mount Fuji,
is also known as one of the places where the intact body of a mermaid was preserved.
The story goes that, on the verge of dying,
this mermaid came to the Crown Prince Shotoku at Baiwei Lake.
The mermaid told the prince his own sad story.
This mermaid was originally a fisherman.
Because of fishing in forbidden waters, he was punished and turned into a hideous creature.
Having learned his lesson, his last wish was to become a reflective model for the younger generations.
He asked the prince to build a temple and display his hideous corpse as a symbol of life appreciation.
Moreover, in April 1990,
Wen Weipo reported that some scientists are trying their best
to find the most amazing discovery of today's archaeology,
the origin of the mummified remains of a mermaid 3,000 years ago.
A team of construction workers found this unbelievable creature in a tomb
where a treasure was placed near the Black Sea outside Sochi.
The news of this discovery was recently disclosed to the West by Soviet archaeologist Dr. Jeremiah.
She looks like a beautiful dark-skinned princess with a fishtail underneath.
This amazing creature measures 173 cm in length from the top of the head to its scaly tail.
Scientists believe she was about 100 years old when she died.
Many legends and myths are based on or inspired by true stories.
Therefore, we should not hastily attribute all legends and myths to the illusory imagination of the ancients,
arguing that their cognitive ability was still undeveloped and limited.
With the discovery of the aforementioned mermaid corpses,
perhaps we can't help a serious argument that mermaids really exist
and they lurk somewhere in the vast ocean around the world.
Let's hope that there will be new discoveries about this creature in the future.
