Hey, I'm Ben from Althan Tech and today we're comparing the new Sony Xperia XZ Premium
versus the Samsung Galaxy S8.
Now let's jump straight into some daytime photos.
Both look good and actually somewhat similar.
Nice colors and resolution.
The Sony has a bit higher contrast and the colors are well saturated, but not too much.
With the S8 we can see more details in the dark areas.
In photo mode, the Sony has a wider angle and fits more onto the screen, which I like.
However, the S8's dynamic range with HDR is much better, in both photo and video as
you'll see.
Switching to video, both can shoot 4K 30fps.
Kind of funny that the Sony has that wider angle lens, yet it crops in and the S8 ends
up having the better, wider field of view in 4K video mode.
Here's some of my other thoughts.
The Sony has that high contrast, especially in the darks, so often details are crushed
in the blacks, while the S8 maintains those details.
This I prefer.
And again, the S8 handles HDR much better and outputs higher dynamic range, images and
video.
The contrast of the Sony is just a bit too heavy for my taste and I'd like to see it
flattened out just a tad.
Here's a fun action shot.
Let me know which one you like better down in the comments.
I did a quick autofocus test and I think the S8 takes this one for speed.
I mean, sometimes the Sony was fast, but it's inconsistent and if I slow down the footage,
you can see the S8 is racking focus back and forth fast, while the Sony is sometimes off
focus point.
As for stabilization, the Sony only has EIS, which it does a pretty nice job, while the
S8 has both EIS and the more important OIS.
Now both cameras have slow motion, but different frame rates.
The S8 maxes at 240fps, the Sony gives us two options, 120fps or the insane 960 frames
per second, though as I cover this in my full camera review, it can only record that fast
for a split second.
This is a cool side by side, and it shows me two things, I love the ultra slow motion
of the Sony, it looks like the rock is almost frozen mid air, and then the splash moves
so much slower than the S8.
However, you can just see how short that recorded moment is compared to the continuous recording
of the S8.
Let's jump to a front facing camera test, the Sony is wider angle, which I like, even
more saturation and color punch than the S8, pretty surprising here.
This is an audio and video test, audio test one two of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, needs
a new name, and this is an audio and video test of the Samsung Galaxy S8, quick stabilization
test.
The Sony is doing a much better job at stabilization over the S8, kinda funny since it's the
opposite effect on the rear facing camera.
And finally, here's some low light photo and video tests, they actually almost look
the exact same in stills, both look good.
In 4K video, there's a little more difference here, though still similar in some regard.
Nice colors, both doing a sufficient job at noise reduction, as I mentioned previously
the blacks are crushed more on the Sony, whereas in the S8 you can still see some of that shadow
detail.
So, which one do you guys like better?
I literally can't make up my mind as to which one I'm gonna keep as my daily driver,
they both seem good in their own unique benefits and I can't decide, help me out down in
the comments.
Seriously, if you guys were shooting YouTube videos, which one would you use?
If you haven't seen my in depth Sony camera review, I'll give you that and all the product
links down in the description to check out pricing.
Oh, and that upcoming OnePlus 5, I'll be sure to cover that camera as well, so be sure
you're subscribed so you don't miss it.
Until next time, let's live authentic.
