What's going on you guys? Welcome to another episode. We are deep in the mountains heading
to a small lake where we, in the last episode, discovered some giant mountain trout. So the
mission for this episode, really, really simple. We're just going to hike up to that lake. We're
already very close. We're going to try and catch one of those giant trout. This is a really pretty
like little alpine meadow right there. There are these little tadpoles all over those pools. Man,
it is windy in the mountains today guys. Oh my goodness. Look what we have found here.
It's the motherlode of mountain blueberries. Man, we could have a feast and not even have to fish.
That's one of my favorite things in the mountains. Oh man, my mouth is just like
watering right now with how like tarred and sweet those berries are.
Wow. I almost went down face first in the blueberries. Look at this. This is just all
blueberries around me. It's a giant mountain blueberry field. There's our alpine frog pond
behind us. These small alpine waters are just filled with little frogs and salamanders,
little snakes, bugs. Everything's living in here, having a good time this summer.
The larger lakes, of course, then have the trout in them. I'm pretty convinced the tadpoles have
grown since I was here last. Definitely, they're like half an inch bigger. Guys, we've arrived
at the lake of mountain monsters. This lake here is basically divided into two parts. Right there
in the center, there's a shallow section that's filled with boulders and some lily pads. Then
there's this deep pool right here and another deep pool on the other side. At the far end of
that pool back there is where we saw some monster trout. All those lily pads down there. Man,
absolutely beautiful. They might be tempting to fish. A lot of you bass fishermen are going to
say, dude, fish the lily pads. You're going to catch a giant mountain bass. These lakes up here
in the mountains actually really don't have bass ever in them. Look at these blueberries. They're
like the size of my eyeballs. I'd have really small eyes if these were the size of my eyeballs,
but they're big. These are really nice blueberries. We got to keep going. Otherwise, we'll never
have time to fish. This right here is that center section of the lake. Those boulders,
that shallow section, and there's that second deep pool. Look at this. We have arrived.
If you guys saw the last episode, you know exactly what monsters were chasing here. Basically,
I was out backpacking for a few days up here in the mountains, caught a trout that we brought over
to this lake to cook up, did a little bit of fishing here just to see if there's some fish
in this lake at all. Then we kept seeing some fish surfacing right over there at the far end
of the lake. I snuck over there with a bobber fishing rod. On one of the casts, all of a sudden,
a giant trout just leaps out of the water, grabs my bobber. Oh my goodness. What just happened?
He attacked the bobber. He was a monster. Then we never saw the trout again. It was getting dark. I
had to get out of here again. That's what we're doing today. I saw in the comments on that video
that tons of you guys wanted me to come back and catch the monster. Now, another huge request that
I saw in the comments on that last video was that we not only catch one of those massive trout,
but that we do it with a fly pole. What I like to do when I'm carrying my rods, instead of putting
them into a case, which I know would protect them better, I just kind of bunch them together and
then use these cable zip ties. What are these things called? I can't come up with the word for
whatever this is. All right. This here is the bobber that the trout attacked. I'm just going to start
the day with a cup of coffee. I haven't had any coffee yet. It's still early. It's been a long
hike. Yeah, coffee time. That's how we got to start this mountain adventure. The way to start
these solid fuel stoves is we just got to get that little S-bit down there lit up.
There we are. Oh yeah, she's burning. Oh, she's getting hot. She's getting hot.
Hold out the water filter while that coffee warms up. I'm just so thirsty right now.
What I noticed is, look at the water here. I don't know if you can tell, but there's stuff
floating around here everywhere. We're just going to go out a little bit further where it's
a little bit more clear. Just amazing. Man, I wish I could let you try this water,
but just imagine taking a straw and dipping it into this delicious alpine lake.
The freshest sip you've ever had. The water in these lakes is just so nice and cool.
On the menu this morning in the mountain kitchen is bacon and eggs. For that,
we're just going to start with just a little bit of butter. Throw that baby right in the pan.
Man, it's so hot out that butter is starting to melt already without even turning the heat on.
A little bit of bacon. Got to get that pan seasoned for the fish later.
There you go. The stove was acting up. Oh yes.
Take a look at that coffee water. Oh man, she's ready. These backpacking
pans are not the best anti-stick, if you know what I mean. It's sticking just a little.
We're just going to set that back on there, put a lid on it, and forget about it and see what happens.
With us, we have a jar of some Irish instant, courtesy of one of you guys. Thank you very much
for sending some Irish coffee. Oh, it's going to be good. Let that baby brew up in there just a tad.
Okay, I thought I was going to be patient for the coffee, but I kind of want it now,
so we're just going to cool the coffee down just a little. Easiest way to get our coffee
down to drinking temperature. Take a look at these eggs and bacon. Oh my goodness, look at
that. That's going to get the day started. Yes. Now that is a breakfast. Oh man, coffee don't get
more delicious than that. Fresh up here in the mountains. There we go. Just a little mountain
breakfast like that is going to give us all the energy we need to catch one of these big trout.
Okay, time to set up our pole here. It's in our tackle box. I've got one little compartment where
I've just got a bunch of flies here. This one kind of looks pretty good. As always, we just want to
make sure to not lose our tag ends, so we're just going to throw that little guy right back in the
tackle box where he belongs. Yeah, this is one of the biggest flies that I could find, which we're
going to need for these giant fish here. I was going to stop by the store actually and pick up
some giant, like some really fatty flies, but I just didn't have enough time. I've just been super
busy at the homestead working on a brand new giant chicken coop. The chickens have gotten
absolutely huge, but we'll do a homestead update for you guys very soon, as well as a property
update. I know a lot of you guys have been asking for property updates. Crazy. Where do you see
stuff like this? Time to go catch a giant, and I hope this net's going to be big enough. All right,
let's go. Let's get over to the other side of the lake. What we're just going to do while we're
traversing the lake is keeping an eye open for any monsters swimming around. Man, it's so thick back
here. No trail whatsoever. All right, let's go. Oh, there it is. There it is. There's a monster.
There's a monster right here. Right here, baby. Right in front of us. There he is. There he is.
Goodness. Oh, there's like no good way to cast right here. Where did he go? He was right there.
He was right. Oh, there he is. There he is. He's right there. Oh, oh, there he is. He saw that fly.
He saw that fly. Let's try and go down to him. My goodness, that was the first cast.
He immediately saw it. Oh, he's such a big boy. Oh, no. We got stuck in the tree already,
and we're out. But we're completely wrapped. Okay. Okay. This is a mess, guys. This is a mess.
We got a little too excited a little too early. Man, I need a better casting spot. This is
horrible right here. What a mess. This is such a mess. Oh, geez. Come on.
Okay. Okay. I was not set up or ready to start fishing right here. That was not the intent.
All right. Let's get a little further over to a better spot. Here we go.
This is where we saw that fish last time. We were bobber fishing right here,
and I cast that bobber right over there, and he just blew up on it. There he is. There he is.
There he is. There he is. Giant trout right in front of us. He's right over there. He's right
over there. There we go. That was a good cast. Good cast. Come on, baby. No. No. We're stuck
on the lilies right when he's right there in front of us. Oh, my goodness. No. No. And then
wrapped around this bush too. Oh, my goodness. The monster's right here. He's right here.
Oh, the fly hit me in the face. I lost him. I don't know where he is anymore.
There. Come on, baby. Oh, man. Okay. I'm getting stuck in every single thing imaginable.
There's so many blueberries here right now. I've got to have just a couple of these guys.
Oh, yeah. Look at these blueberries right there. Oh, yeah. Tart. Geez. Can we climb this thing?
The tree's like the thickness of my wrist. Maybe we can climb it. Oh, yeah. We can. Absolutely.
Okay. Okay. Just fell off the tree. Saved the fly, but it's stuck in my finger.
Okay. All right. Oh, yeah. There we go. Perfect. Oh, yeah.
Maybe what we need to do, just based off of the couple of casts I did get in front of him,
it got his interest when it touched the water, but then it just sat there, and that's when the
trout lost interest. So maybe what we need to do is switch over to a slowly sinking fly. That
usually drives the trout nuts. Oh, my goodness. There's definitely one right over there.
Okay. Let's just go ahead and do a little bit of casting here. Oh, there he is right down there.
Do you see him? He's right underneath the log. Okay. Let's give him just a little break here.
There's another one. There's another one. A little commotion at the surface. Come on.
Come on, baby. Oh, there's a snake in the water. There's a snake right there.
I don't want to catch the snake though, but we're fishing right next to him.
How awesome was that? Oh, big snake. Big snake right there. Hey, what's going on, buddy?
Oh, there he goes. So we're switching up the fly game a little bit. I want one that slowly sinks.
So we're going to use this guy right here. I used this successfully over in Yellowstone. We caught
my first Yellowstone cutthroat trout on this exact fly actually. So hopefully we won't lose it.
Now, this is not like a nymph. It's more like a, what is this called? Like a streamer or something.
But I think we just need a larger presentation. A slowly sinking action is what drives trout
crazy sometimes. I'm going to pinch that barb just because there is a chance of us releasing the fish.
And if we do, I just want to minimize the damage as much as possible.
Oh, this is going to be it, man. This is the ticket. This baby is sinking.
Looks like a little leech or almost looks like a dragonfly larva. A little bit of a
challenge casting against the wind here. Here we go. Oh, there he is. There we go. That's a fish on,
baby. Oh, he's a giant. He's a giant. There he is. Oh, I saw him swim over to that fly. I was like
checking out my reel and all of a sudden he came in. Come on. Ooh, not a whole lot of fight yet.
He doesn't quite know he's hooked yet. Oh my goodness. He's beautiful. He's beautiful.
Oh no. Stay away from the lilies there, buddy.
Come on. Okay. We got to get down to them. Oh, a bit of a disaster. A bit of a disaster.
All right. Oh my goodness. Look at the color of this fish. Oh, it's too big for the net.
Oh, he won't fit in the net.
Let's go. Oh my goodness. Oh, that is a giant, giant trout.
You can see it's a cutthroat with that marking right there. It might even be a cutthroat
rainbow hybrid. Absolutely beautiful. Look at all the spots in the belly on this fish.
I'm just going to keep them in the water here. Put them upright. Let that baby breathe.
And we're trying to revive this fish here. There's just a snake that came over and said hello.
What's up, buddy? Why won't this guy here swim off? That's really weird. He's been in the water
the whole time. Barbless hook came right out. For some reason, this guy here just wasn't making it.
I was trying to revive him for a good 15, 20 minutes. And because I won't be able to eat all
of them, now we're just going to pack right back out after this lake. I was going to go to another
one with you guys, but we'll probably just do is make that another episode to go to another lake.
So of course, subscribe if you guys are still brand new and like these mountain
adventures. That's also the biggest fish I've ever caught on the fly. But yeah,
I'm pretty darn sure that's the biggest fish I've ever caught on the fly. Thank you, buddy. He's
going to provide a wonderful meal for us. Let's go ahead and get this guy back in the water where
he can stay nice and fresh. This little guy here did some serious work. I knew that that fly was
going to be fire out there. Oh my goodness. Oh, there he is. Oh, we broke off. What just happened?
No, I cast out just like a little cleanup cast and I saw something come up and snap at the fly.
So I'm like, oh crap, cast right back in. And an even bigger monster came up and broke me off.
Oh my goodness. There's some real monsters in here. Dang. Luckily, we did pinch that barb. So
hopefully that fly can just come right back out of that guy. That was a giant trout down there.
Jeez. In this whole disaster, I might've stepped on the line or something like that. And that could
have weakened it. We're only fishing four pounds. That was a giant. And that fly, that was the lucky
fly too. Oh, if that's the only one I brought of those. Oh, there's a little snake down there again.
He's going to come up right here. Hey buddy. Hey. Hey, what's going on?
Oh, he's out of here. Yeah. Look at this giant tree mushroom right here. It's like the size of
my head. Nice. All right. We're tying up a new fly here. Hopefully this trout here go after
smaller flies too. Just going to go ahead and pinch this barb. There we go. I know there's
another one out there feeding. Come on baby. Take it, take it, take it, take it. Can't tell if it's
a giant snake or a trout that's in there hunting or something. Oh, there he is. That's a fish on
baby. Oh, and he's off. He's off. Oh, dang. Okay. We didn't break off this time. That's all right.
Wow. That's crazy. All the bites have happened right in front of us. They like this area with
that log. It gives the trout a great area to hide in. And there's a bunch of boulders right here,
a steep drop off. So there's lots of room for like bugs and little frogs and stuff like that to,
to hang out here. So it's just a perfect, perfect trout habitat. They just love this area right here
and we're back by the rocks here. I was just messing around and all of a sudden a giant
splashed over here. Oh, there he is. There he is. Giant, giant, giant, right under the fly,
right under the fly. Come on baby. Come on. Come on. Oh, is he going to slurp it? Come on baby.
Come on. Come on. Come on. He's right there. He's right there. Oh man. We're going to practice our
forecasting here. That's a monster. That's a monster trout. Oh, there he is.
Come on baby. Come on. Come on. He sees it. He sees it. Oh man. I feel like this fly just isn't
big enough. It's not big enough to get him interested. Oh, that's a giant. That trout is
like this big. All right. We're swapping the fly one last time. This guy unfortunately doesn't have
a bead head on him. What we can do is just take an itty bitty split shot right at the head
of that fly. Hopefully it's not too heavy and sinks too fast. Oh, there's the trout. There's
the trout. I don't know where he went. I just saw him. Oh, there's another one. There's a giant
right there. Man, they keep cruising by, but I just, I lost him again.
Where did he go? Oh, there he is. There he is. There he is. He's checking it out.
He took it. That's a fish on baby. Ooh, giant, giant, giant. Oh,
come on baby. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Oh,
don't want him going into the lilies here. Don't want him going in the lilies. Come on. Swim the
other way. There we go. There we go. There we go. We're gonna have to go out and chase this guy.
We got a giant on boys and girls. Oh, oh my goodness. Oh,
oh, he got us halfway around the lake. We're almost in the backing here.
Ah, okay. Okay. Come on. Come on. Come on. Oh, come on. Come on. Real, real, real, real,
got to keep tension. We don't have, we don't have the barb on there. So
this fish is so hot. This fish is hot.
Come on, baby. Come on.
Let's go. All right. Stay away from the lilies, buddy. Stay away from the lilies.
There he is. There he is. There he is. Oh, he's going straight for the lilies.
Come on this way. There we go. There we go. I got him turned around.
Come on, baby. No, don't go in the lilies. This way, this way, this way. Stay away from there.
Stay away from there, buddy. There we go. Oh, he's a monster. He's a monster.
Oh, he's got like a, a humpback. Oh my goodness. This is a giant.
Come here, buddy. Come here. Oh, he's got, oh, it's a, it's an obese football trout.
Not even going to net this guy. Oh wow. He's powerful. He is powerful. This is a giant.
This is a true mountain giant right here. This is probably one of the biggest
mountain fish that I've ever caught in my entire life. Stay in the water. Oh, and he's off. He's
off. Why did you go under the rock? Oh, I hope he doesn't get stuck.
Where did he go? Could he be out here? Oh, oh no. He's right here. He's right here.
He's right there. Where are you, buddy?
Oh, he just came out, but then he swam right back in. What are you doing, buddy?
Saw him show up like twice. So I know he's like not stuck. He's swimming around there,
but I think he's just trying to stay in the shadow and maybe he's hiding there
because we're poking around. So maybe we're just going to give him a little bit of space
to come back out. So the way we're going to take out the guts on this guy here
is we're just going to take the knife, go right under the tongue right there or over the tongue,
cut back just a tad, and then we just grab his tongue, hold them by the jaw right there.
And now you can just pull all the gills and all the guts out just like that. Nice and easy. What
we'll just do with the guts here is put them between the rocks. The lake is full of crawdads
and they'll just devour that. Now all we got left back there is the kidney. Score that once,
push that baby out with your fingers. Man, our butter is all soft from the heat.
Spoonful of butter here. Oh, the fish is so fresh it wants to curl so badly. You know it,
you know it. All we're going to do is throw on just a little bit of Danish sea salt.
I've been sweating plenty today. Don't got to be shy at all. Okay. The reason for only putting on
salt and not a whole bunch of other seasonings is so that we can taste the delicate flavors
of these wild trout up here. We're going to let that skin get nice and crispy.
Oh, dude. Oh, what a day, man. Didn't expect to be keeping such a giant today. That's gonna be
plenty of meat for me for the rest of the week to eat off of. Flip this guy around. Golden brown,
baby. Oh, yeah. Crispy. Look at that. The scales are all standing up like a panko crust.
I just don't say thank you enough to all of you guys for making all of this here happen,
being subscribed, smashing the like button, all your guys' kind comments. We did just hit
half a million subscribers here a few weeks ago. Absolutely crazy. So, oh, man. Surreal.
That trout is perfect. Absolutely perfectly cooked.
Now, what we have with us as well is a gourmet flour tortilla.
We don't have a whole lot of fancy stuff with us on this trip here. Usually, we'd have the avocado,
the onions, the wild mushrooms, but we brought cheese. We did bring cheese. Swiss cheese. So,
don't say that I didn't treat you well on this episode. Oh, hot. Why did I do that again?
Oh, man. Look at that. A Swiss cheese trout mountain wrap. Let's do this. Nice,
sweet, and simple. But before, actually, we try this whole wrap, I just want to try
a piece of this trout itself with some skin. Got to do it with the skin for optimal flavor.
Oh, man. Dude, that's good. That is one buttery trout. Not just because of the butter, but
flaky, oily meat too. Those large trout, when they get thick like that, man, they've just got
like this really nice, oily, pleasant flavor. Here we go. Cheers to all of you guys.
That's good. That's really good. Very interesting flavor on that trout. It's very mild.
See if we can still see some more monsters swimming around in there. It's just so clear.
Man, she's absolutely beautiful. That's all I got for you guys, though, in this episode. This was
just a shorter one. I just want to make sure to get to this lake, as promised in the last episode,
to catch these monster trout with you guys. And then, here very soon, we'll be out in the
higher mountains doing the multi-day backpacking send. So, make sure that you guys are subscribed
for those ones. If you aren't already, hit that like button. It helps a ton. Leave a comment. You
know I'll see you guys in the comment section. That's all I got for you. I love you guys,
and we'll see you all very soon for the next fishing adventure. Until then, you all know it.
Fish on, baby.
