WILD TROUT Fishing in MOUNTAIN RIVER!!! (Catch, Cook, Camp)

Morning you guys. Welcome to another episode. I just woke up in the tent and we are currently camping right next to a beautiful river where we've been out on a solo backpacking adventure trying to catch trout. Just take a look outside man. Absolutely beautiful. We did catch a fish yesterday. A beautiful cutthroat trout. Thistlefish baby! Fish on! Yes! Oh what is this? What? This is one of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen but he was just like a half inch too short to keep so we let that little guy go but that's going to be the mission today is to try and catch a keeper trout. Got the GoPro batteries charging. Here's our bear mace to protect us from the bears that we tried out yesterday. We've got this little safety paddle right here. Pop that out and she's hot. If you guys didn't see that episode that was exciting. So I'd say let's get on our boots and get out of the tent and feel good to get off of these rocks too. All right look at that view. All right did a quick little morning drone flight. Getting kind of hungry so let's get to our fishing gear ready to try and catch a trout before man it could be that the weather's just going to turn on us again. I hope that it stays nice. I forgot to fill up on enough water last night. Didn't want to get up because it was just kind of nasty out so I'm a little dehydrated. Oh yeah wow that's just so oh so refreshing. Ah super cool snow melt off water. Oh man here see I'll give you a sip. All right I gotta throw on the hat though to protect from the sun. For breakfast we're just going to have whatever leftovers we have of our our little emergency ration that I made for us there yesterday. Just some nuts. You just can't go wrong with mixed nuts. A little bit of cashews in there. Got uh all our fishing gear right over here. Got our net. We got to do a little repair job on the net though. Check this out there's a uh right there's a hole kind of large. I've had some trout poke their heads through there if they're a little trout. I got our fly pole ready. Same exact setup like we're using in the last episode. A wet fly down here. A red little little nymph. Up higher we have a black little uh dry fly. All right this guy here is our uh fly wallet. We're just gonna throw this guy on. It's got all our flies in there that we're gonna using or gonna using gonna be using. Can't even talk. How am I supposed to catch a trout? One more sip of water. Oh it is time to get real. Uh one thing I've been doing is staying away from this pool right next to the tent here. Uh just because it's really deep and I feel like there might be a trout in there. The water's a little slow so maybe they don't quite like it. But let's go ahead and sneak over there. Just gonna throw the net right there just in case something crazy happens. There we go. Oh there's already a fish down there. Oh we had a bite on the first cast. There was a little trout right there. Wow wow wow wow wow. The water was so clear I actually saw the fish before uh before I felt any bite or saw anything on the fly itself. How crazy was that? Looked like a beautiful little rainbow. There we go. Oh was that oh on the second cast. Let's go. Oh man just a little guy. Little guy here. Oh we still haven't repaired the net. Oh crap fly line is stuck. Oh my goodness. Oh it's a disaster as always. We're for sure gonna release this fish here. He's really small. Oh he went for the dry fly. There you go. In the net. Oh it's another little cutthroat. A beautiful little cutthroat. Oh he got through the hole. Oh bear mace. Wow he actually got away. He got through that hole which I forgot to fix. Alright well that was perfect. That was actually a great release. Didn't even have to touch him. Didn't have to pull out of the water. Uh we're fishing barbless hooks. Okay we gotta we gotta fix this net. We can't afford to have a hole in our net. Dude how crazy was that? Two bites. Like two casts. Two bites right here. Look at that. Right in front of our tents man. We we're like sleeping in fly fishing heaven right now. This is just surreal man. Okay so my idea with fixing the net in this spot is uh to use a lighter to hopefully melt and fuse that rubber back together. Okay we're gonna come in from underneath. Oh yeah I think this is gonna work. Let it cool off just a little bit. I wouldn't want to put too much pressure on it but uh it worked. Okay we haven't even really gotten started yet. What we're gonna try and do is uh get back in there into the current. Man I want to try and get it like right under the that tree there. We'll see if we can kind of roll cast it in there. Oh yes perfect perfect. Oh no we're stuck. No no no no no no those are such good flies. Oh two pound test dude we are screwed. No oh no we lost both flies. Oh rest in peace little flies. All right let's retie. This fly right here on the top has the dry fly. Now all we're doing for the uh wet fly underneath the dry fly is tying the uh second leader down to the base of the hook of that first fly. We have our dry fly now at the top and our new itty bitty I mean a tiny tiny the smallest fly I think that I've ever fished. A tiny red nymph. Last thing we just gotta do real quick is uh pinch the barbs on these guys here. Uh what we're just gonna do before we leave the campsite because we're about to pack further down river and look for deeper holes and we're gonna fish a whole different river but uh what I just wanted to do was up here there's one more spot that looked really good that we have not fished yet. So right over here this beach is where we our little survival meal last night. Our tuna and rice which was really good gave us some energy but uh right here in front of us this kind of looks good right by that stump. All right sneak up to the water. Let's do this. Come on. Oh perfect cast perfect cast that's exactly where I wanted it. Wow no takers no takers on that drift. About behind that uh stump there right in front of that tree. Anyone home? Oh there's a bunch of snags right there. Gotta watch out a little bit. Just look at the color of that water when the sun shines into it. Absolutely beautiful. Now this tent here doesn't have poles instead what you just use is either trekking poles or in this case what I used is uh just some sticks. You can just return them right back where they belong and then it just uses uh lines to tighten everything up. Remember to always make sure that your tent is as clean and dry as possible before you guys roll it up. That way you'll prevent it from uh getting mildewy nasty. I never exactly understand how tents are ever supposed to fit back into their bags. Like it's just a couple inches short every time. All right goodbye campsite. Thank you for taking good care of us last night but man we got a lot of river to adventure. Always got to keep a lookout for for bears or mountain lions. Oh man we are deep deep in the country out here. Oh man dude this is just nuts. Let's just give it a practicing the roll cast. Let your line come back like that till it's in a d-loop and then roll it out. Let it come back and let the belly sag and whip it out there. Just getting the hang of it man. I'm still new to the whole fly fishing thing but slowly slowly getting to know how it works and man is it fun. I mean it's really satisfying to finally start mastering or mastering to start getting a hang of the skill. Man I'm getting hungry. A little keeper trout sounds pretty good right about now. Oh man those socks are starting to get smelly. The backpacker's socks. Just got to make sure we do not get these guys wet otherwise it's going to be a very long day. All right throw those guys around our head. Oh man cold cold cold cold cold cold. Refreshing though at the same time it's like good and bad. It's like a sweet sour sauce. Ow man some of those rocks are really slippery. Some are really sharp. Really got to watch it. Oh it's deep right here. Really deep. I'm going the wrong way that's why. Dude you know there's a trout hanging out down in there too but there's no way I'm casting into that All right man this bank right here is not not stable. Oh man that would have been a way softer camping spot right there. Some sand. Damn instead we slept on the rocks. Oh dude are you kidding me? Look at this. A little tart still. Always good that's a salmon berry. All right look at this. I think this spot is worth pulling the net out. Man there's a really deep spot right under that log there. It gets really deep that I'm trying to fish. That wasn't good. That wasn't good. That might have spooked some fish. Damn. Can't believe we didn't get a single bite in this pool right here. It's really good looking but it's probably just because I fell in there. Oh fell down. Scared all the fish away. We're going to keep exploring upstream here. This river I checked out with the drone should have a couple of really really beautiful holes that we're going to try and fish and if we don't catch anything on this one then I'm not exactly sure what to do. Maybe we would head back and fish the main river but we still got some time to explore this one here. Throw you guys on the chesty. Let's go. Try to make a couple of casts like right down here. Like right under us. There could be fish right under us right here. Let's see what happens. They're just going to drop the flies right below us. Whoa you can look down into the water there like a window. You can see in there perfectly. Not seeing any trout though. Dude this one's so going to have some fish in it. This is so beautiful. It's going to be a little bit challenging to fish just because we got that tree right above it but I think if we stand up above and fish down into it we should do okay. Oh yeah from right here this is perfect man. Absolutely perfect. Oh no no. Oh dude we snagged up. Come on baby. Come on baby. Come on. No no no. Oh I think we lost our whole setup again. No. All right I just tied up a single fly on here. I think for this hole that's just going to be a little more controllable. It's just a little brown, black, white nymph with a golden head so it'll sink. So we're going to throw the strike indicator back on. Get a little bit of bobber action. There we go right in the seam. Oh there. Oh he went down. It went down. Oh that might have been a fish. That might have been a fish. Oh man getting really tricky to fish this here. We're going to fish in this little hole. Oh man no. We're so going to like. Okay can we do this? All right let's go. Oh wow. Threading the needle. Oh that was just some current. It got pulled under. Oh no. No not again. Wow we are just like snagging up on every single thing possible right now. Oh man we broke off again. No. Man this spot here is cursed. It's cursed. I'm telling you. There that way. Now we're not tempted. Now we're not tempted to fish it again. We're just going to continue upstream and see what we find up there. This is so beautiful but like this is mountain lion country right here. I just feel like any second. I don't know what it is. Have you guys ever been out like in the wild and gotten this weird like a weird little something down your neck like you're being watched. Not really worried about it but I just always wonder like when we're down here at the riverbanks what's watching us from the woods. What we can do now is sneak up on this fishing hole here from behind. Oh yeah that looks good. Man I didn't know this was going to turn into a jungle fishing adventure. There's a fly right here. Get off of there Mr. Fly. Oh my goodness there's a fly on the fly. Get off of there. Okay this water here is so perfectly clear that I can see everything going on in there. Kind of like that pool this morning. Oh man we are so deep so deep in the woods right now. Wow look how beautiful this is. Right there under the logs there's kind of a deep hole. Super deep hole underneath there. Look at that. Here I'm just gonna fly fish by hand. Just dip that fly in there. Come on any trout home right underneath us? Come on baby. Come on that would be so sick to catch one like this. Man guys I think we made it as far up the river system as we're gonna go because I'm no longer seeing any trout. I know they've got to be up here but this might only be water that the trout come up to as they spawn. I'm not sure if they live here year round. We're gonna follow the river system back down to where the river is a lot larger than maybe that's where the big trout are hanging out. This is what I used to do as a kid when I lived in Germany was just go out in the forest goof off in creeks that were about this size and over there it's funny in Germany we had very large fish in creeks like this. We had like eels and all sorts of stuff. Let me know in the comments do you guys have any small creeks in your area that are like have giant fish in them? Getting so hungry. Just losing a lot of energy right now just physically and mentally. Sure wish I had the bullet lure with me right now. You know it'd be fire. Never give up hope. And look at this. Wow beautiful spot. I think now it's time to catch a keeper. I tied up my last of the red nymphs so fingers crossed man. Fingers crossed that we can pull it off this time. Let's give this a shot right here. Oh yeah we're further out there in the current this time. Oh man we're like in the middle of that. Oh whoa whoa we might have just had a bite. Maybe had a bite. Oh oh no. Might have just been a rock. Hard to tell. Over there the bobber went down though and I saw a weird silver flash. That could have been a trout. Maybe. Oh yeah there we go. Far in there. Far in there. Come on baby. From here we can fish that area back there a little bit better. Oh that's a bite. There's fish on baby. Oh jumper. Jumper. Oh we lost him. Oh man we lost him. Oh it's beautiful though. Dang I didn't have the net over there so I had to do this crazy man run. Let's try that again. I'm gonna leave the net right there in front of us. Okay calmer approach this time. There we go. Come on baby. Really good looking hole back there. Come on. Oh oh that's a bite. That's a bite. Oh they're ferocious back here. They're ferocious. There's another trout hanging out over there. Come on. Ah didn't take it that time. We might have spooked him. Oh there. Oh that was a bite. That was a bite. Want to hit it right there. We got way back there. There he is. That's a fish on baby. Good one. Good one. Good one fighter. Oh that's a good one. Oh that's a sizable trout dude. Oh oh jumper. Okay I'm really nervous here. Don't want to lose him. Oh man. Come here buddy. Come here. Oh come on in the net. In the net baby. Yes. Oh I almost fell in the water. Beautiful rainbow. Let's see how big this guy is. Oh yeah. We got an eight and a half incher. Eight and a half. He's a keeper. Yes. Oh is it recording? Oh it is. The battery's almost dead. I think that's my first ever keeper rainbow on the fly. Maybe. Dude we pulled it off. Yes. Oh man I didn't think it was going to happen. Put him right to sleep that way. He doesn't need to uh suffer any more than he has to. We are going to be eating that guy down here on the throat. There's no red marking there. So this guy here is a wild rainbow. Gorgeous fish. Oh man this is so sweet. Oh cool. All right buddy. Thank you for providing a beautiful meal. Let's get a good measure. He's for sure a keeper. So you can see the eight inch markers from the butt all the way to this black line here. And if I put the tail right on the butt you can see he's about he's about a nine incher. This guy's a perfect eater size too. He's he's a keeper but he's also not too big because the really big ones could be breeders in these systems. This looks like a nice spot to cook him up just out of the sun. She is going down. Now to clean up one of these trout all that we gotta do just take our knife just go ahead and start cutting them right over here by the butthole. Go all the way up trying to avoid cutting into the guts. And then what makes it really easy is just cut right here behind the head like that on each side right behind the gill plate down through the spine and just take the whole head and rip it down and all the guts just come right off with it. Really easy. We're going to feed this to the crayfish living in here that way they got a little something to eat too. Then the only thing that we got left back there is that dark line. It's the kidney. Just score it and then you just push it right out with your finger and we got a beautiful cleaned out trout. Wow. Perfect. This little guy right here can be our like a little table that we got. A little cutting board fish right there. We just want to keep all the sand off of them. That's a lot better. That's our little cooker right there. All right what we got here is just a little bit of olive oil and we'll throw that right into the pan. All right I forgot the onion but we definitely brought a mushroom along. We're just going to cut this guy up throw them into the olive oil. Nice big chunks. Now what we'll do with our fish just because he ain't going to fit into the pan hole is we're just going to cut them in half. Really simple. Good thing I sharpened the knife before the trip. Wipe it off on the pants. Your parents ain't going to see it out here. I'm going to throw the thick piece into the pan first. That's going to be good. Now the only seasoning that we're going to use for this is some delicious Danish sea salt. Oh look at that. That's just a single flake right there. I'll let that little guy sizzle in there for a minute. We got a fresh organic avocado with us. Oh it's perfect. Sticking just a little. Just a little. Okay okay. Oh it's good. I'm just eating the skin off of the fins and that trout has like a a sweet flavor. Wow I've never had a trout taste that sweet. I don't know why that is. With us we have a pack of organic flour tortillas. Oh yeah you guys already know what's happening. You know what's happening. I just want to thank all you guys too. We got some cheese with us but dude it totally melted. It's it's ground cheese but it's like a oh look at that. It took the shape of the cup. Oh we dropped some. That's oh no I don't want to waste it. Oh wow dude it's so melty and got the hot strap in my mouth. We're just going to sprinkle the cheese up on top here. There we go. Hot hot hot. Oh yes. We'll pull that off. Take a peek inside here. Golden brown mushrooms. Oh that trout looks good. All right this is done. Let's try one of those little mushrooms. Oh whoa so juicy. Oh man look at that golden brown trout. Oh man the skin just all came off. There we go. There we go. Dropping right off. All the bones came right out. Perfect. Leave that for the raccoons. Now we can take that big chunk of meat. Throw that right on the taco. Just peel the meat. Peel it right off. Man you know what we haven't done in a while is eat a trout tail. That was a good one. Load it with mushrooms. No one of them fell in the sand. Sandy mushroom. Goodbye buddy. No it broke. And we got us a beautiful trout taco. Oh man this one is full. I don't want to drop anything. Look at that. That is absolutely delicious looking. I'm so hungry man. I'm so hungry. The sun is setting behind us. Oh mushrooms just coming out everywhere. Dude the amount of flavor right now is unbelievable. The mushrooms just have this instant earthiness. The fish is kind of sweet. It's weird. I've never seen a trout taste exactly like that. Taste I mean like no fishiness. Just like a sweet white fish meat. Man this is like the taste of summer right here because that's what we're gonna do this summer a lot is just climb up to those alpine lakes. I'll probably try and make that maybe next week's episode. I'll try and make it out on ascend into the mountains. We'll see how snowy is up there. So make sure that you guys are subscribed if you are still brand new.
