Good morning and welcome to Paul T's World and in this video we're going to have a look at the
David Austin Rose Garden in Albrighton in the Midlands in England. It's a gorgeous summer's day
it's 23 degrees centigrade and the sky is blue so as soon as we walk in there are lots of pergolas
with the climbing and rambling roses so let's have a look at those. The gardens are split into various
rooms. This is the Renaissance Garden. Remember my rambling rector which is on the patio?
Well this is what a rambling rector looks like when it's in the ground. So as I was talking on
the previous video with my rambling rose there are two different ways of pruning these roses.
So the important thing is ramblers flower on the previous year's growth so you prune back the
whereas the climbing roses flower on the present year's growth so you prune back in spring. Late
spring if you have harsh winters then prune back after the worst of the frosts. In Britain we can
prune back actually in the autumn although I do it in the late winter early spring. The climbing
rose then grows its new stems and flowers straight away that very year but just look how the rambling
roses have smaller leaves they tend to have more flowers and smaller flowers. This is a beauty isn't
it? And as we've often seen from my climbing roses by the front door they do drop their petals so you
have to keep on picking up the petals. With climbing roses rambling roses tend not to drop
their petals. They've grouped together roses with the same characteristics such as repeat flowering
etc so let's just have a little wander around. Flowering once during the summer these rambling
roses produce a spectacular display of masses of small blooms. So these are the ones flowering let's
see some of these others. Now this is interesting we've got repeat flowering rambling roses. Now I
don't know these I've never actually seen these. Flowering in flushes these repeat flowering
rambling roses produce a display of masses of small blooms. So they repeat flower and let's
we have got what's this say short rambler so short eight feet and this one is paul noel
that's obviously mine isn't it paul noel so that is a repeat flower six meters 20 feet 30 pounds
and then we've got patio and miniature roses particularly small rose plants ideal for growing
in containers on patios light in fragrance and let's see what we've got here queen mother small
shrub one and a half feet by one and a half feet 50 centimeters so modern bred within the last 100
years modern shrub roses vary widely in style usually repeat flowering they are ideal for mixed
beds or borders the fairy 80 centimeters high 90 centimeters spread two and a half feet three feet
and what's this once flowering old roses flowering just once these old roses are generally known for
their many petaled blooms and strong fragrance some date back to the 15th century so here at
david austin a modern rose is 100 years old and if you want an old rose it's the 15th century
i love that modern in the last 100 years old in the last 600 years and next the floribunda roses
so let's have a read about the floribunda roses flowering abundantly with smaller
smaller something with smaller blooms held in clusters floribundas are best used in dedicated
rose borders and here's a lovely white one and it is called not surprisingly iceberg three and a
half feet by three feet 110 centimeters by 90 hybrid tea roses notable for their recognizable
bloom shape hybrid teas are best used in dedicated rose borders champagne moment oh i like this one
because look just look at the orange and then the white outer petals medium shrub four feet by two
and a half and here's an interesting colored shrub here it's a floribunda and it is blue for you
three foot by two and a half feet 90 centimeters by 80 and yes all these roses look to be 30 pounds
and this one is a whiter shade of pale lovely name and towards the back here we have the standard
roses oh shropshire lass so if we have any shropshire lasses listening here we have a rose
for you a medium climber 15 feet by four and a half meters lovely yes here are the standard roses
so a standard is when all the lower branches are clipped off and you just have one main stem
let's see what we've got here for the step the standard roses
vanessa bell medium shrub three and a half feet three feet 110 centimeters
see what this one is hollow car i think that's a royal horticultural society
gardens hollow car isn't it is that up in is it in yorkshire so this is three feet by three feet
medium we've spoken a lot about the rambling roses so let's have a look at some of the climbing
roses that are for sale here an excellent way of bringing height to the garden they usually have
large flowers held singly or in small groups and this one here this white one is a blush noisette
short climber three meters oh new dawn i know this one four and a half meters the well-known one
oh this has got a nice name hasn't it warm welcome short climber this one's only eight feet
two and a half meters nice color oh there we are there's one out there right there
back to white ones over here highly recommended it says oh this
this is the rambling rector this is the one that i've got in a pot and what have we got here
very tall rambler 25 feet to seven and a half meters so 30 pounds you can have a rambling
rector and here it is told you it was a vigorous one didn't i and yet i've had it in a pot all
these years it would be far more vigorous of course if i put it in the ground which i might well do
albertine now albertine i've got albertine on the other side of the pergola and it is also a tall
rambler at 20 feet now you could say that the two ramblers i chose for the pergola
are far too vigorous for pots and indeed yes they are but i've had some really good results by
feeding them and watering them regularly however it probably would have been better
if i bought one of the smaller less vigorous ramblers because there is some there that we've
seen that are more eight feet rather than 25 feet so let's just carry on a little bit oh here we are
paul's himalayan mosque paul's himalayan mosque that's 40 feet so there's a lot of rambling
fabulous i hadn't realized that i was that famous we've also got for sale a few clematises
what's this clematis vicky easy to grow low maintenance compact habit 22 pounds 95 b
oh earnest markham now i think i used to have an earnest markham oh here's a well-known one
i miss baitman nice white one let's move over to the patio and miniature roses
particularly small rose plants ideal for growing in containers on patios light in fragrance and
the one we've got here is little white pet small shrub two feet by two and a half feet so as we
can see there's a rose for everyone there's a rose for every situation from patios pots
trees as you saw the these rambling roses grow through trees beautifully and as we can see here
at david austin we have the pergolas and they're growing beautifully over the pergolas but also
along ropes along chains as we've seen these ramblers will grow anywhere as we can just see
over in the distance there here's a long view of these rambling roses growing along the chains
it's a nice display that i like it beautiful now in this area here where they are selling the roses
it's really nice to see all the different names they have for these roses and what's interesting
is we've actually got a little package here and this package i've just been told has 500
nematodes in it and those nematodes eat red spider mite and apparently the red spider mite comes out
when it's about well over 22 degrees centigrade and they replenish these about every six weeks
or so so there we are that's how to get rid of your red spider mite
i hope you've enjoyed our visit to david austin rose garden
near wolverhampton and i'll see you next time in paul t's world bye
