The ignorant monk One day a man knocked on the door of an old monastery
reputed as a refuge for wise and diligent monks This man had an appearance
andrajoso so the monk who answered his call initially assumed tha
He wanted some alms But when he asked the man simply said he wanted to find
a sense of purpose to their existence and purify their souls For this reason I hoped they could
Accept it as a novice With much disbelief the monk sent him away
before the abbot to present his request He examined it and could see that it was
of a very simple and uneducated person He claimed that he had only worked in the most humble trades
He had no basics and possessed no education It was very obvious that he had no ability
study the sacred scriptures and that he would not be able to contribute to the library But the
Abad who had a keen spirit could see the sincerity of the good man and thoug
at he should not reject it for not everyone who came to the
monastery had such an authentic vocation So he gave him a broom
And he entrusted him with the task of permanently sweeping the garden The man accepted with great enthusiasm
Joy and already in his novice monk's attire he devoted himself diligently to his humble profession
Several years passed and the cleaning monk became an indispensable character
In the monastery The other monks saw him not so much as a companion on the path toward
ot as perfection but as someone of lower rank yet trustworthy
However over time they began to notice how their expression had gradually changed
越来越平静 仿佛有一层宁静的光环永远环绕着他
As he approached his peaceful spirit could be sensed encouraged by a kindness
It was closer to divine compassion than to simple charity
As this perception was no longer limited to one or two monks they began to comme
some talking about what intrigued everyone Someone speculated that perhaps
He had learned to read and studied at night when no one was watching Another thoug
He surely knew some secret practice that had allowed him to grow spiritually
very quickly Some who had stopped to speak with him said that he was already gone
reached a high degree of spiritual perfection and that his soul manifested a purity that was no
Human Ready to find out the truth behind the transformation
The broom monk was approached directly for questioning without much preamble
They asked what kind of technique she used for her inner cultivation and if she could share it
With them The monk looked at them in amazement and answered simply I don't know anything about techniques
I don't understand what they mean Actually I haven't done anything Since when has the abbot allowed me to
I will remain in the monastery I have done my task with all the love she deserves
Day after day I have worked hard to clean the garden and every time I picked up the broom to sweep
I thought that at the same time I was cleaning my heart of anger greed and arrogance
Any other desire or poison that might have been in him I never did anything different from that
Reflection The true wisdom and purity of spirit are found deep within our hearts
If we only look outward we are doomed to remain stuck
in the same state of ignorance Anonymous story adapted for bcsradio ne
