We thought we knew a thing or two about sacrificing civilization for freedom
until we landed in Palmerston. It's no utopia but they do live life on their own terms and
that's about as close as one might get. If you haven't seen our past two episodes pause here
and catch up. While we wait we'll give the bottom a good scrubbing and stretch our fins
because our Cook Islands visa has expired and it's time to move along.
We're going to Nui. Setting sail looks like well one of two things is going to happen.
We're either going to have a beautiful sail to Nui and it's going to be three days
all downwind nothing over 20 knots perfection or we're going to be right on the edge of some storms
and it's going to be variable and could be total crap. So you know same old same old you don't know
until you get out there. I'm pretty stoked actually about Nui.
Get some hiking in, cliffs, it's gonna look completely different than here.
Oh do we actually need these? Yes. Yeah you think so? Let's just make sure they work. Okay good point.
They both started that's good. That's good. Oh we got gear on the back. I guess I should uh go to
the helm. Nah nothing's behind us. We could float for days. Except for spinning around.
Alpha golf, alpha golf, alpha golf. This is curiosity.
Might be out fishing. Yeah or sleeping. Or sleeping, yes. Bob likes his naps.
Oh well. Bye Bob. Bye Palmerston. It's been real. And our view for the next three days.
All right that's it for the next three days. Let's just hope it stays like that.
Fingers crossed. I doubt it but you never know. Crazier things have happened.
Crazier things have happened. Thing is ready for a good downwind sea.
Tattoo isn't broken like a starlet. I am drunk but I'm made for. I was made to fall in love with you.
Lovely bowl of asian noodles. With vegetables in it.
And a lovely cup of tea.
Absolute heaven if it stays like this. I may not want to go to land. It's beautiful. I love it.
A stunning night. It is super quiet. The only thing you can hear is the sound of the water.
Every once in a while you hear the little flick of the edge of the spinnaker and the water is
like Christmas lights because the moon is really bright so it's reflecting off of the water and
it's really twinkly and there's still clouds and a few stars out and it's just money. It's beautiful.
That was like just perfect weather. A little bit of wind a little bit chilly so I'm all wrapped up
just drinking tea and eating little snacks tarts and cookies and biscuits listening to podcasts
and just wow what a night. What a great way to start the day. We have a moaning steering cable again.
We had this on the crossing from Ecuador to the Marquesas. We lubed it and it's been fine
until now. No I messed up one other time. Yeah yeah yeah we've had to lube it a couple of times
I guess but yeah it needs to be serviced. We can't do that until we haul out and we're not hauling
in you go in you go
lubed it but it's still not spinning. To say that's a tight space is an understatement.
You need hands the size of a four-year-old but arm length of like a seven-foot man.
Need some help? A cheap Amazon rod holder. Oh man it's not helping. You must be swimming way down and
then swimming up. Oh yeah? Because it gets really tight. Maybe it's the wahoo. I don't even see him.
No. I haven't even seen him period. Nope. Whoa I had to let Jason take over. My arm was getting tired.
Come on. Bring him in honey. Beautiful yellow tail. Yellow fin. Tuna. Dinner tonight. Yeah.
Cats are gonna be happy. We're gonna be happy. Everybody be. He's gonna go to good use.
Thank you for your sacrifice. That's it. You ate it all. That's your pile for later.
That looks awesome. A little extra crispy but should still be good. So what do we have here?
Okay so I used the coconut that we got from Bob and cut that open and used the coconuts
on the inside to make coconut cream and then used the shreds to go into the coconut rice.
So you have coconut rice and then the tuna has a little bit of a honey soy glaze with
sesame seeds and some chili flakes and then I topped it off with a little extra soy sauce. Yum.
And it's good. Uh oh. Yep. That's a big storm. Makes me feel like watching movies and drinking
hot tea and doing nothing else. I tried practicing my ukulele and I was just struggling to keep a
beat and of course get my fingers smooth fast enough. I'm just too slow today. It's just a
slow day. Except we're sailing. Sailing is good. We're moving along in a nice little
clip. Our winds have been mostly consistent except for the storms that keep moving in and out.
It's making us go off course a little bit but we're moving. We're sailing. We're getting closer.
Picked up pretty dramatically. Our winds have picked up dramatically and uh yeah it's better
if you're still just sitting on the deck because we thought oh this is gonna pass and we're gonna
be able to put that thing back up. Definitely not in like 30 plus knots of wind. So gotta go on deck.
Put the spinnaker away and uh get prepared to put the genoa out so we can
keep trucking. It's gonna be exciting. Ready to go.
Good thing there wasn't much in that thing.
Holy cow. Biggest wave we've ever had. Just literally came all the way over the boat.
It threw everything. I mean it moved this clear across the room.
Everything inside went to the other side of the room. That was nuts. Yeah. Okay I'm gonna go do
damage control. All right can you put my computer somewhere safe? Yeah. Geez. Down to our last
eight hours or so and it's gonna be a ride.
We are getting 27-30 knots of wind. The waves are knocking us around like a couple of ragdolls
and yeah that's our state. It's exciting. We had such a lovely first couple of days with
you know just downwind spinnaker and now we're in it. Might be I don't know it's hard to really
judge but it seems like the roughest conditions we may have ever seen. Maybe. It's pretty close
because I mean we've taken some waves that have absolutely I mean jolted everything in the boat.
Knocked everything down. Knocked everything over. Stuff that was tied down came untied. I mean
we're getting it. We are getting it. I mean over like crashing over the entire boat and
keep in mind we're tall. The top of the Bimini is tall. The Bimini. The hard top whatever.
It's high up there and when waves are crashing all the way on top and just coming down like
somebody unloaded a dump truck of water on you. It is respect. That's all I got to say.
No no Katie go back inside. Okay. Sunrise and land ho. It's a beautiful thing.
What a difference a little land can make. Getting into the lee of the island is like entering a new
body of water. The wind is still howling but now that giant rock ahead is taking the beating for us.
We're going to get settled in, check in with customs, mop up all this sea water and then
we'll be back. But spoiler alert Nui is our dream destination and one that is cut abruptly short.
Thanks so much for watching. If you enjoyed this video please consider sharing it. It helps us out
tremendously.
