Questioning my own career choices is probably one of the most anxiety-inducive activities
that I do.
Just think about it.
You spend almost half of your adult life working, right?
And there are 12,000 careers available to you in this world.
Imagine if your career was a meal.
Like what are you supposed to choose if all the options are looking pretty good to you,
right?
Statistically speaking, and I hate to break it to you, but there is only 20% chance that
you will work your dream job.
Studies also show that up to 60% of adults actually regret not pursuing their dream job
in the early years of their career.
In this video, I'll walk you through a simple three-step exercise that is supposed to give
you more clarity around what is potentially your dream career and how to get there.
I constantly question my career choices and decisions.
I don't know if I'm moving to the right direction, but at least I'm moving.
So I'm going to do this exercise with you.
First step of the exercise is actually super fun.
It's called inventory of skills and passions.
All you need is a piece of paper and a pen.
Then you write down every single position you held in your life and what you liked about
it in terms of skills, responsibilities, achievements, and what you didn't like about it.
Position is kind of a fancy word, but this can be anything.
This can be, you know, you being a brother.
This can be you doing an internship somewhere, doing work experience.
This can be you at school.
If TikTok was a position, and for me it is, I guess I like making videos and inspiring
people.
What I don't like is having hate comments and having anxiety over views.
And then you basically have a list like this for, let's say, 10 or 20 positions that you
held.
I don't know how long that's going to take.
For me, I think it's going to take quite long.
But this is an essential step of this exercise.
What you have to do is you have to imagine living nine lives, sorry, nine lives.
And in every single one of those lives, you have to work, right?
And you have to imagine for yourself what would be a perfect job to do.
But the trick is that you're not kind of constrained to one.
You don't have to choose one, so you don't have that pressure of like, I have to choose
one career.
You have nine lives, right?
So you can do nine different jobs.
The trick is to kind of go as bold as possible.
There are three crucial rules to keep in mind when doing this exercise.
Number one, money don't matter, right?
Every single job takes care of your needs and basically you get paid the same.
Number two, prestige doesn't matter.
So every single job gives you the same kind of social standing.
And then number three, you have all the requisites, kind of skills and qualifications to perform
each of the jobs.
So I'm going to use nine balloons for this, but you can use anything.
I just like balloons.
President, teacher, actor, scientist.
Okay, so now what I have is nine balloons with nine different lives that I would like
to live if I had nine lives, right?
So we've got president, teacher, business owner, spy, actor, scientist, journalist,
like all of these things.
And now you get to think what's feasible and what's not.
You'll also discover that some of these can be kind of combined together.
So for example, social scientist, journalist, teacher, that's all kind of education.
Actor, social media personality, marketer is all kind of, I guess, entertainment, right?
So I just like popping balloons.
So the topic that I found for myself is like this combination, again, of thought leadership,
authority, education, and being fun, being funny, being entertaining.
So it's like a mixture of media and kind of some form of public service, right?
Put together.
And that's kind of where I'm at right now.
Anyways, now the third stage of this exercise is creating a perfect job post for yourself.
So based on your inventory of skills and passions and on your kind of nine lives that are supposed
to capture every possible career path that you might want to take, you manufacture this
one position that doesn't even have to be part of a certain career.
Like, for example, I don't know, like, I don't know, like chief coffee connoisseur, right?
It doesn't have to exist, right?
But what you have to think about when thinking about this perfect position for yourself is
like, what skills are you going to use?
How are you going to spend your days?
Like what time you wake up?
Do you speak to people?
Do you work on your laptop?
Do you not?
Like all those things really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really outline
the details of what makes that job perfect for you.
After you're done doing this exercise, I just want you to remember one thing is that judging
yourself is never going to help.
And that's if you think about counterproductive uses of time, judging yourself is such a waste
of time.
So do this exercise, figure things out for yourself, try a career, fail at it, try another
one.
You know, life is long and you really have a lot of room for experiment and don't box
yourself into thinking that you only have to choose one and then just judge yourself
and constantly second guess yourself.
Because that's just, that's just not fun.
It's just not fun to do this.
And I've certainly wasted my time doing this and probably will waste more.
But I hope this video gives you clarity.
And if you liked it, then, you know, subscribe, hit the bell, all that stuff, you know.
Love you very much.
Bye!
