Narrow Escape - Trapped by Hail, Flash Floods, and Landslides
Check that out, Black Bear Pass, that's what we decided to do today and guess who we found?
It's our buddy Colt and Shanna!
Say hello!
Hello!
This is their JK, Willie's edition.
So we are both open in front and limited slip in the rear, correct?
We are.
What size tires you got?
Stock.
He doesn't even know.
255s.
What the heck is that?
Like a 31 or something?
32.
32?
So tell us about Black Bear Pass or what you know about it from the last time you did
it.
I haven't done it in about 7 or 8 years.
Really it's just a really scenic trail.
Matt, the rocks are going down.
One just...
Go!
When you get to the...
Over the summit is when you're going to get to a one-way.
That one-way is when you'll overlook Telluride.
That's when people that have vertigo have issues.
Nothing like Rattlerock?
Nothing like Rattlerock.
Alright, let's do it.
Look at this.
Tell them what you're doing.
I'm eating.
We're doing Black Bear Pass.
And she's over here eating chocolate strawberries.
Don't give me a hard time because I know how to live.
He's jealous.
He can't help it.
I didn't see him complaining.
You have your seatbelt on.
I do?
Put your seatbelt on.
So he said when he healed all the keys over our head.
I lived in that grit but now he'll learn at the end when the tables turn.
Take me on, Lord forgive me, take me on, on the river where the guilt can't find me, red
handed sinner, on, where the grave can't cry out, cause I cold ten a finger on the trigger
and blow, but take me on now, take me on, on the river where the guilt can't find me.
What are those, are those neutria?
Marmot?
Whistlepips.
Is he going to whistle it?
Is he going to bite us?
Oh he is right there.
He's like wedged in there.
Look at that.
Should I pull his tail?
Look how fat he is.
He's trying to get out.
He went the wrong direction.
Come on out of there you little sucker.
We're not going to hurt you.
Shannon's going to tickle his feet.
He's turning around on me.
Don't tickle his front feet.
Don't tickle his face.
Even though it's not hard, it's the most technical one that we've been on so far.
Think so?
And a lot of scrapes from the tires, that means we're flexing.
Yay.
This is our first rock garden.
It's like got little six inch ledges.
Oh my goodness.
Oh lord have mercy.
This Jeep does good though.
Gotta give it that.
Except for all the electronic nonsense.
I tried to use the hill descent the other day.
First it won't work.
Then it does work.
Then it says it's not available.
I don't know.
I think you just don't know how to use it yet.
I don't.
It's too complicated.
There's too many strange features that you gotta read a book to figure out.
It should just be simple.
Gas pedal, brake pedal, and gear shift.
You are so old.
You're showing your age.
If I put Austin in here and said Austin figure this out he could.
No way.
There's a button right here that is a hill descent.
Then you take your feet off the brake and off the gas.
Then you have to put it in manual.
Then you have to adjust your speed with the gear shift knob.
It's just insane.
But it does climb pretty good.
It does climb pretty good.
So we're headed down.
We've got options here and I'm not sure which one is the best one.
It's starting to get a little sketchier.
But we're heading down towards the point of no return.
Hope was not going to tell me.
But I checked the date.
Today is our anniversary.
We've been married for 15 years and we've been together for 20 years.
So we might have to go to McDonald's later tonight and celebrate.
Hell yeah.
Here we go.
Do you need to put that down dude?
I'm talented.
Would you do anything cool like this?
This is so awesome.
As long as you live it'll be cool.
So the biggest mistake people make is they're too scared of the edge.
And they get up higher and higher and higher.
And that's where people don't get their tire jammed.
And they start driving weird.
Or they've had people come off up top higher.
And that's because what they'll do is they're lollygagging.
They're looking at the water.
They're looking at the mountains.
Not paying attention to the road.
I'm a little sketched out myself right here.
This is what it looks like from the outside.
Holy cow.
How sketchy is that?
I don't know what's in front of the Jeep.
But it looks like it just falls off.
And just disappears.
It keeps going.
Holy cow.
I'm nervous just sitting in the car up there.
Hope is not going to get out for sure.
There's a mountain.
You know this right?
What's that?
That water pool when you do this trail.
Oh yeah? I've never heard that one.
I think you're making it up.
Okay you first.
It's very very loud.
What's it going to do?
I can see your butt crack.
You got to cover up the crack.
That's going to be a lot worse for me with my hair.
Because it's going to stay wet.
Nope.
I won't push you in.
Now you're committed.
There's no turning around anyway at this point.
I plan to go back.
We got people coming down.
Whoa.
Oh wow look at that.
Okay.
Look at this sketch Fred.
It's an obstacle on the side of a thousand foot cliff.
With a waterfall right next to it.
It's kind of a weird feeling.
And there's a chipmunk in the trail.
Don't swerve.
Alright.
I think that was the worst of it right there.
Yeah.
It just feels like coming around that corner
it feels like there's nothing there.
You're just driving off the side of a mountain.
It reminds me of that Vegas ride.
Remember where we got swapped off
at the end of the building.
And I went around and around.
But worse
because you have no safety whatsoever
other than hopefully you're a good driver.
The top of the stratosphere.
That ride is nuts.
It tilts you forward and then you're just hanging down
by a seatbelt.
I actually like that one.
I hated that one.
You don't even like heights.
You're a thousand feet up.
Hanging on by a seatbelt.
Yes but you're holding on by a seatbelt.
And we're not talking like
little bell. We're talking like the full metal gear
metal metal metal metal and then a seatbelt.
What about the nuts and bolts
and all that stuff that holds that all together.
I'd be shocked if they didn't keep up with that.
I've never heard of them having a problem with that
that ride. Ever. Have you?
We ride that
raft ride at Six Flags
and it's flipped over and killed people.
We just rode one the other day
when we went to Dollywood.
Check out this waterfall.
It is beautiful.
Hey yeah she got out of the Jeep now.
Don't stop yelling at me.
I'm feeling bad for you.
Because I'm on the side?
No you're on the drop off side.
Yeah.
Go ahead and show them what's out there.
I think I'd rather be on the drop off side now
than on the drop off side
when you were doing that
turn.
Look at this in front of us
right here.
Lord have mercy.
Not only that but it's starting to rain pretty good.
Does that help?
I don't know what you would do if you had an issue
up here. Let's say you
broke something.
Your engine wasn't running. There's no way
I'd want somebody to pull me down this.
Nope.
If you broke a tie rod or your steering
Oh man.
What you would do
and then there's no
bypass. You can't let
somebody around you.
Surely, hopefully people
know how sketchy this can be and don't
bring their
property vehicles down here.
I know you love
Cherokees but unless you're
going to bring a new one down here
that's not going to do
very good.
Wow look at this switchback coming up.
We got hail.
I guess if you're
having to fix hail damage then I guess I'll let
you fix the windshield too.
I'm more worried
about the slickness of it.
You better do it before it gets too bad.
Oh crap man.
You ought to get your face not mine.
I don't think I can do this.
I'm trusting you because I would never do this
with anyone else.
I don't think so.
This is not cool.
It's all starting to pile up.
There were two of them?
How funny.
Three point turns are sketchy on ice.
Oh look at this.
It's just piling up right here. Look at this.
I'm getting wet. Yes.
I'm the witness.
Yeah I got ice down my shirt.
Yep.
There's the top of Vidaldale Falls right there.
Hail.
You see them?
Oh my goodness.
A little sketched out right about now.
Huh. Are you sketched out?
I'd rather get down quicker
rather than
get in their car right here.
Wish we had a backseat babe.
Why are they doing that?
Oh my gosh rocks are falling.
Matt the rocks are going down.
Go go go go go go.
Oh.
We need to pick those people up.
Oh my gosh.
It's just people everywhere.
I feel like I'm in a horror movie.
Yes.
I saw it on the backup
camera. I wonder if I caught it on video.
There's just too many
of them.
I wish we had kept our camping spot
so we had all this empty room.
People are everywhere
Matt.
There's the falls.
Oh I'm getting wet.
See that?
No baby I can't. Oh my god.
Hey babe.
Happy anniversary.
They need to go back down.
Are they crazy? Maybe.
That is so sick.
Can we go through that?
People come up to us.
There's another place.
We're going to get trapped.
There's a bunch of logs and crap
we're going to get out of the way.
They need to go back down.
We need to get out of here.
I feel like this is the safest
place right behind this rock.
Until the flash flooding starts coming
out right underneath us.
We need to get out.
That's probably a good idea.
Yeah I think so.
I feel like there's a semi safe
spot right here behind this rock
for a landslide.
What's up with you right there?
It's a bunch of trees but I don't know
what's beyond that.
Well we've got
food and supplies and things back here.
Are you guys in a safe
spot up there?
Babe what are you starting at?
We need to start thinking of what we're going to do
if it washes out.
Wait to be rescued I guess.
I feel safe right here.
At least for right now.
There's no water rolling down the side
of this mountain right here.
And there's lots of trees and
stuff so you know there's no
landslides in the past right here.
Sing it honey.
Sing it.
I'm just a poor boy.
I have no sympathy.
So how do you like your anniversary
so far?
So much fun.
Oh man.
I think now
these guys are in better shape because they
can go around
the landslides and stuff.
Well hopefully.
I don't know if they can or not. I haven't seen it.
Well here's the road.
Holy cow.
That is
some sketchy business right there.
It looks
like it's out up again up there.
It is. It's doubled up.
Wouldn't be a problem for the scorpion
or something but
the jail and then we've got all
these stock jeeps behind us
that are starting to pile up
back there.
And it's just soft and squishy.
People walking can seem to
get over it but
it's out again up there. I don't know what's going
on up there either.
Look at the mountain sides up there.
They're just pouring water.
Cold.
Soft huh?
Oh man I'm cold.
I'm starting to shake.
So right now we're eating lunch waiting on
the road crew to come and clear
this impasse we have
going on here. It looks like
a lot of the hikers made it down.
They're able to walk over.
But we cannot.
Hope everybody made it out okay up there.
I think the rocks flying by us
was the sketchiest part.
Huge basketball sized
boulders just going choop.
I don't know.
That
makeshift waterfall
had some serious logs and things starting to come down.
Oh yeah yeah.
Waterfall where there wasn't supposed to be a waterfall.
That would be correct.
And then the road just washing out as we're
trying to drive through.
Pretty sketch but the rain is
subsiding. Hopefully the water
will subside and
we can get out of here.
Colts over here.
Trying to push it down.
I see the road crew
though. There is a road
crew on the other side
of that bush. Doesn't
give you any scale.
That's the road crew.
There's no
heavy equipment up here yet.
It's getting there.
Thank you.
What did you think babe?
That was pretty good.
I think so too. You did a good job.
That didn't take him very long.
Would it take him a half hour maybe?
We just pushed everything off the side
of the hill there. Luckily not too much
came from uphill.
We made it. Now we can go
eat.
The sheriffs are here
to do a rescue mission.
The one thing we did get is
right before the storm, one single
guy tried to go across Via Ferrata.
You guys, are you familiar with what that is?
That's a trail
that goes across the cliff side
and you got to clip in and
get across.
Did you guys see any
single hiker or anything?
Trying to get a head count of everything
but really we're looking for one
single guy that tried to go across
the face wall right before the storm.
I hope he made it.
This is what it looks like from the bottom.
There's a guy missing up there.
Apparently he was rock climbing
up there somewhere where all that
water was coming down
earlier.
Hopefully he's alright.
I guess time will tell.
That's
beautiful up there. There's Vail Falls.
This is
the waterfall that we drove
right next to coming down
Black Bear Pass.
Right there
it was raging
at one point when we were coming through there
if you guys saw that but it's
calmed down now.
Man, all that whole wall right there
was just raging
whenever it was hailing.
Oh yeah.
Welcome to the town of Telluride.
Well that was a harrowing experience
to say the least, don't you think?
To say the least.
An anniversary that we
won't forget, probably? Probably not.
Luckily we made it safe and sound
and down here in town it's like nothing happened.
Everybody's just going
about their merry way
here. Look at this.
Pretty neat little place.
They're having some sort of
something. They've got all the streets
blocked off. We're going to go eat
and I guess we're going to wrap it up
and call it a day. Sounds like
a plan. Moab, here we come.
That's right.
