Rescued Rare White Belly Bald Eagle

Okay guys, it's breakfast time, huh? Oh yeah, you little thief. That's too big for you to eat. Come here. Come here. Yes, we've got food for you right here. Okay. Now these are about two week old baby kestrel falcons. Their nest was cut down. They were in a big old cottonwood tree in a big hole. They're a cavity nester. And as you see, competition for food is pretty fierce with these little guys. They're pretty ravenous. They're going to compete pretty heavily. And what they're eating right now, and I know this might bother some people, but this is what we need to feed. These are what we call pinky mice. You can buy these at the local pet store. You have to feed them a natural diet, very similar to what mom and dad would feed them. And these little falcons consume a lot of small rodents, and they consume a lot of large insects. And as you see here, they eat everything. And of course in the nest, the most aggressive always eats first. And you can see who's the aggressive one here in this group is this little female right there. And she would take the lion's share of food, but I can pretty comfortably make sure that everybody gets their share. As you can see, these really don't make very good pets. These are predatory birds. Their talons will be very large and razor sharp. They make their living hunting other quarry. Never, never recommend people keep these for pets. Can you imagine they go through this much food in a single feeding? Now, pinky mice like these at the local pet shop, you know, run about 50 cents and some some places about 75 cents a piece. And we're going through about five of them right here in this particular city. Now you multiply that by about five to six feedings a day. So it's very expensive here at the Southwest Wildlife Foundation to feed all of the injured animals that come to us. And we rescue a potluck for these little guys. Great. There you go. One more. There you go. One more. OK, you can have that one, too. Yeah, you're pretty full. Let's give that one to this one as well. All gone.
