Much better now
Good afternoon foodies, I'm Wei Loon and welcome to the gourmet replay
Today, we're at Lorong Jugera, which is along Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur
And we're gonna have some curry laksa or what we also call curry mee
Which is a spicy broth noodle dish that is generally topped with chicken, blood cockles
Fried tofu puffs and some vegetables and if you just do a quick Google search of curry mee in Kuala Lumpur
There will be multiple popular curry mee spots that will pop up and we have tried most if not all of them
And we find that this particular spot we are bringing you to is probably serving the best curry noodles in Kuala Lumpur
And this spot ironically isn't even in one of those popular curry noodle lists
I don't know if you can tell but generally I'm walking around this residential area
It's actually in a very very secluded spot
Where the owners of this curry noodle store are operating out of a shack that is located right opposite a low-rise
Flat area. Let me just very quickly show you guys
There right behind me are the low-rise flat areas and right opposite
This little stall
Anyway, it's lunchtime now, 12 people are starting to come in. So let's quickly go in and order our curry noodles
All right, we are now seated at Uncle Keong's noodle stall and just a quick look around
It's really a very simple set up
It's like a shack and they just lay out the tables across with chairs, plastic tables and plastic chairs
And there are quite a number of customers already seated and enjoying their curry noodles
Uncle Keong also sells other dishes as well, aside from curry noodles. They have wonton mee and prawn noodles as well
So in case you're wondering why Quiet is not around
She is definitely here. But today you mainly see just me reviewing this bowl of noodles because as I mentioned we tried
Nearly all the popular curry mee spots and it does take a toll on us
Yeah, so Quiet is not going to be enjoying this bowl of noodles with me today
And she'll be helping us with the montages for the foods and stuff
So let's quickly order our curry noodle and let's see what it is about
Guys, the curry mee is here. So take a quick look, very simple bowl of noodles
We've got here a nice yellowish reddish broth and what we got here is what we call the tau foo pong
Which is a fried bean curd puff
pieces of chicken along with that curry chicken sauce
And we've got some pork skin as well and some noodles mixed with rice vermicelli
So first off, I know what you're thinking. Where is the blood cockle?
Probably pretty small pieces of chicken
But trust me guys, we are here for the broth. Not so much the ingredients
So let's start with the broth first. For those of you who are visiting for the first time, I recommend you do it this way
Don't mix anything. You start with this origin of the broth first and see what it tastes like
The broth has a nice consistency. It's watery but not too watery. It looks a little bit creamy, doesn't it? So let's try this out
Salty, moderately spicy, a little bit savoury
Decent broth, but not great yet
As I mentioned to you earlier, you see this pile of curry sauce on top, the chicken curry
Mix it in now
This is going to give the broth an additional layer of body
Now it's gotten a better consistency
Much better now
Flavour profile changes entirely. You get the flavour of the santan first, the coconut milk takes the lead charge
Followed by that moderate saltiness, some moderate spiciness that actually doesn't have a technical hit on
It actually starts here a little bit like it caresses your throat a little bit at the end of your tongue
It's got a very addictive kick to it and it ends with a tinge of sweetness
I would say it's actually balanced pretty well. It's a pretty well balanced curry broth
Let's try a bit of the noodles
Definitely a tad overcooked
Let me try that as well. A little bit soft, but that usually happens with
most of the
hawker stalls in KL. Most, not all. But it carries that flavour of the broth pretty well
Let's try the broth again
I noticed today they lean a little bit towards saltier. The previous few visits, not so much
But let's see if this sambal can save it
by giving it more
body
And healthy deluxe. Let's test this out first
Sambal has got an interesting flavour. A little bit sour, some saltiness, moderately spicy. Gonna add it in
Give it a good mix
Let's try the broth again
More body now. It gets creamier, but not too creamy. It doesn't overpower you
I would recommend adding the sambal in
Let's try some of that chicken. I think it's a chicken breast. So let's hope it's tender enough
Not the most tender, but definitely not tough. And I like the fact that they use curry chicken
I think it's a brilliant move. Because the chicken has that flavour of the curry infused in, rather than using poached chicken
Flavour is good
A bit of that
tofu bok
Got a mild oily fragrance and a nice bite and it's absorbed all the curry sauce in
Very decent
Okay, what I got here
Is the what we call jipei, which is a pork skin. Not all stalls put it in, but some of them do
So let's try this
Very decent. It's got a good balance between a bit of crunchiness
And a bit of chewiness. It sort of resembles a fish maw. We call it yi piu
And because they've soaked all that savoury curry flavour in, so it becomes very appetising
You know, this is the type of curry noodle that on the first few slurps, it tastes pretty good
But it doesn't really amaze you yet
And you'll probably feel like it's probably the same as the other popular spots
but I think the unique proposition for this bowl is that as you progress through the bowl, the flavours do present themselves and
They work in a very harmonious way where you could really taste that layer of sweetness, that savouriness, that fragrance
And the coconut milk, which is not overpowering. Unlike certain curry laksa stalls where they really try to drown you with coconut milk
It's actually relatively slurpable. I could probably finish this broth
And of course the noodles are overcooked, but they do carry their broth ridiculously well
It becomes a very hearty bowl of curry laksa. Very simple, very no frills
Is it out of this world?
No, it's not but
Yeah, I do think this is the best and most balanced curry laksa broth that we have in Kuala Lumpur
But I'm gonna
clean this up now
And I'll see you in a bit for plating time where we're going to a little bit more in-depth detail
On why we think this is the best. Gotta have some justification, right?
So see you in a bit
All right, Uncle Keong's curry laksa broth. It's not a broth that blows your mind on the first sip
In fact, none of the curry laksa that we're trying ever blow our minds
On the first few sips for Uncle Keong's curry laksa, you tend to feel like
It's a pretty decent broth. After mixing in the curry gravy and the sambal, you're like, hey, it's pretty good
But not exciting enough yet. But as you progress through the bowl
I think the genius of this laksa starts to present itself and you suddenly notice that all this while
They have been playing on harmony and balance. All the necessary flavors in the curry laksa are present
And in good enough quantity yet it doesn't overpower anything else
This creates a laksa that is smooth, moderately creamy, yet very slurpable, heartwarming and comforting
And most importantly
Doesn't leave you sluggish at the end of the meal
This broth allows you to forgive the other shortcomings of the dish
For example, the slightly overcooked noodles, which is actually a common occurrence with most curry laksa
And also the lack of ingredients in a way
Of course, I would have loved if Uncle Keong could charge us a little bit more and perhaps give us some blood cockles
Maybe a little bit bigger chicken pieces
Yeah, and some long beans
And with that being said, Uncle Keong Noodle Store scores an okay on the gourmet food
Which means it is some good quality curry laksa. Definitely worth a try
It is definitely the best curry laksa in KL that we have tried. Is it the best in Malaysia?
No
We have tried one that is actually better. It's in Seranban. I think it's called Easier Laksa. We tried it about a year back
And Uncle Keong sort of resembles that but in a slightly lower level
But still if you're on tour in Malaysia and you want to try curry laksa, the gourmet pit definitely recommends Uncle Keong
If you are a curry noodle enthusiast, I will also definitely recommend Uncle Keong. Try Uncle Keong out. We do think it is the best
Yeah
We will list down all the curry laksa spots that we have tried in our description box down below
And we also have some story highlights of these spots in our Instagram
Profile as well. So do check them out
