Ed and I are trying to kill ourselves there.
It's not middle of November
and cold enough to freeze your water in your bottles
by playing some tropical Jamaican style tunes.
This one.
You're hot, I'm hot.
We're feeling hot.
So cold!
My hands are...
I can't feel them.
I'm going to wear some gloves now.
Oh, my nose as well.
I need a little nose glove.
Good morning.
Long downhill this morning.
I'm sure Will is having a lot of fun
whizzing down this hill.
That's for me.
I'm going down at my slow pace
because I can't free wheel.
Just going slowly.
Enjoying the sun.
Enjoying the mountains.
Yeah, really beautiful out here.
And it's good because
we slept up at
3,600 metres last night.
And now we're dropping.
I think at the moment we're at about
3,400 metres.
And we're just going to keep going down.
I think maybe to
2,500.
And we're going to stick around there
for the next few days.
And that's great because it's been getting
mighty cold
in the mornings and in the
evenings and at night, obviously.
It's just been getting so, so chilly.
Even last night
inside our
water bottles froze.
And there we are.
That's all part of it.
And to be honest, what did we expect?
Cycling
up at 3,800 metres
in mid-November
in China.
Look at this!
Jeez!
Cool, we've got some fireworks
in our campsite tonight.
Will and I have been following the G213 for about
500 miles now.
And we've got
just under 200 miles
until we get into Chengdu.
Until the centre of Chengdu.
Which is pretty exciting.
It feels like we're on the home run now, home stretch.
Seems to be a lot of meat hanging up around here.
I think it's salted.
I think it's pig.
I like pig.
Exciting stuff on the G213.
Just bought some pig.
Looking forward
to that tonight.
Day-to-day game of trying to find somewhere to camp.
Nice.
So, we've got
some pig, got some pork that I bought earlier.
Prepared this out.
You were given. I was given, yeah.
Free pork. Amazing people. Come to China.
They gave me a free apple as well.
Same people. So I got free
pork, which I think
has been smoked and cured.
Going to fry it up
with some rice.
And I think Will's
going to do... What are you going to do, Will?
I've got the
really hard part of the
cooking. I'm boiling water.
I know my limits.
Are we going to do some hot chocolate?
Yeah, I'm on dessert.
What's the dessert chef called?
Dessert chef?
Yeah, I'm the dessert chef.
100 miles, 160 kilometres,
somewhere like that from Chengdu.
We've got a choice today whether we want to take
a kind of mountainous, hilly road
staying on the G213
or if we want to head
on the bigger road and go through a tunnel.
I think we're going for the big mountain road,
aren't we? With a lot of switchbacks.
Yeah. So,
that should be fun.
There's Will over there doing
some extreme filming.
I think he wants to set up the camera
over here and then shoot
our bridge here.
It's already 2 o'clock
and we've only done
about 15 miles.
But it's fun, you know?
This is one of the reasons why I'm out here
cycling. I love making
these videos. I love filming.
So, what if we do a shorter
day? It's been good.
We're both happy.
I think that's what's good about riding with Will.
He has a similar
mentality to me.
We like just having
fun and distance
doesn't really matter.
Taking good photos
and taking good videos seems to matter
more to us. So, I think in this respect
we're quite a good match.
We've been getting along quite well.
With another person that's like,
we've got to do distance, we've got to do distance.
They get so annoyed with me because
I'm always stopping and taking photos and videos.
But it's nice that I just come around this corner
and Will's out there on the
bridge. I'm not the only one filming.
He's doing a lot of shots as well.
Which makes life
easier for me
and it's much more fun
when someone else is enjoying doing the same
thing you're doing.
Enjoying travelling
in the same way that you're travelling.
He's been a good partner.
Good cycling partner.
Not lover partner.
Although we did spend
one night in a chilly shepherd's hut.
But the less said about that night,
the better I think.
Did you look at the shot?
Cool.
Nice.
Get a shot of
these massive bridges we're going over.
See if we can't get a video going through the tunnel.
Alright, it's clear!
Okay, let's ride through the tunnel.
The road has just run out.
There seems to be a lot of building work going on.
I'm not quite sure which way to go.
Look at this!
That was a lovely road.
And now it's just a mess.
They told me it's around there.
They said you either go on the main road
or we go around here.
Apparently the right way
is this way.
I think it's going to get bumpy.
There's Will.
Nice and quiet anyway.
Originally he kind of said no
when he said we go around and I said
can we just walk?
And he said okay.
So we'll check it out. Let's check out the tunnel.
It's not as bad as I thought it would be.
No, it's a bit windy though.
No, no.
I think we should keep going.
I reckon it'll link up.
Three.
Jesus!
We'll see how long it lasts.
Going through another tunnel
we probably shouldn't be going through.
It said it was only 700 metres.
Wait, wait, wait. There's the end.
Looks like it's blocked off.
This road was looking so promising
and now it's just turned to a
building site.
Look at all this.
That's the tunnel we came through.
Will's trying to ask.
Yeah?
Okay, cool. That way it is.
The road went bad.
There's a lot of thistles here.
The road went bad
and then it went dark
and now
it's getting cold
and we need to find somewhere to put our tents.
This might do.
This is scary.
Ni hao.
Hello.
Holy moly.
Hello.
Ni hao. Hello.
My heart is legitimately racing here.
This is a freaky
freaky place.
But it's warm.
Oh my lord.
Those were two rooms over there
and then
walking down this corridor.
Scary stuff.
Further tunnel down there.
This looks like a third room.
That is so good.
That's going to scare somebody
wicked.
Try again.
Second time lucky.
Can I come with you for one minute?
Hey up. Me again.
So on this trip I've frequently been asked
Ed, unicycling around the world is great and all
but are you doing it for a particular cause?
It's funny, you should ask that Santa hat guy.
Yes I am. I'm raising funds and awareness
for the charity School on the Back.
The team, based in Somerset, England
manufacture, fill and distribute little red
rucksacks and send them all over the
world to children in dire need of
learning resources. Every single red
rucksack sent out contains exercise books
lined, squared and plain
pencils, colouring pencils
pens in a pencil case, a ruler
a maths set, a water
bottle, a bowl, a plate
and my favourite, a little red spork.
The cost to manufacture, fill
and deliver one school bag to one child
is only £20, so if you can spare the money
and would like to support this amazing initiative
please head over to my charity donation page
