I’ve decided to take on this project I considered years ago. However, I want to add a sculptural element to the top of my clock. I have been inspired by the Dream Lady sculpture at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. I will cover the basics of incorporating the sculpture into the clock design, Simplicity, by Clayton Boyer. I’m breaking this series into 4 videos. Part 1: concept/design and armature design. Part 2: clay and modeling. Part 3: casting the sculpture and cutting out the gears. Part 4: finish and assembly. Thanks for coming along!

Hey there, YouTube.
John Burns with John Burns Fine Art.
Yeah, so this sculptural clock project here,
you can see two little kiddos.
This is the template I'm using for the clock project.
And here's the actual wood base.
I'm posting these pictures on Instagram.
So this is my studio, it's a little messy.
It's part of my studio, anyway.
So I just got done cutting out the intermediate wheel.
And this is the hour wheel.
This is the minute hand on top.
And the hour hand on the bottom.
This is known as the great wheel.
See if I can get down here.
This is going to be the pulley.
And let's see if I can really get this cleaned up in here.
Yeah.
So this is the pulley.
And the cord for the weight is going to wrap around this.
These are the click gears, the quiet click gear system.
This is actually going to hold the weight
to keep all these gears from just running crazy
until the weight has deflores.
These three little ying yang style things.
And there's like a little sawtooth look on Instagram
if you're interested in seeing what that looks like.
And let's see.
Over here, this is going to be where the key,
once I build the key, I have the plans here.
And I got two different patterns here.
I was just cleaning those up.
Those are going to be caps for the end of the arbors.
So I can either do this one or the speed key.
If I do this one, I'll probably lay a pattern
that I use for the hour hand on top of it,
or try to make that so that that can be my key
that plugs into this little spot to wind the clock.
Let's see if I can get that, there we go.
Okay.
So I left the paper on here to help me with notes
to remember where I'm at in this process.
You can see those lines there, for example,
that's where I had to drill and tap that
and put in a set screw to grab that
to make sure that doesn't slip.
There's also a set screw and this pinion,
and that has a leather plug underneath it.
So anyway, what ends up happening here,
now here's the fun part, intermediate wheel here,
and that way it takes it counterclockwise.
Whoops.
You can see the hour hand moving as this turns,
turns the hour wheel on that intermediate pinion.
This is how fast my workday flies.
I can't get done near as much as I want to.
So this, there's, look at that,
12 hours in the blink of an eye.
So here, whoops, here, this 3 1⁄8 inch hole,
this is a dowel rod, this is gonna be
where the pendulum hangs,
and the pendulum arm will come out of this spot,
but it'll hang down through here,
and I have to drill and tap that
so that that'll hold the back of the arbor behind this
because as this tick tocks, so you don't stop like that,
that's what swings the pendulum
and makes the escape wheel work.
So then the weight of the clock,
and that's what actually gives the whole thing some power.
This here is the bob, and I took the knob off of,
because I was thinking about that flower I did, right,
for the clock bob in that last video,
and I thought to myself,
I want something more than just a little nut for this rod.
So I took the knob off my kid's closet door
and replaced it with something else,
and I thought this would work well
with being a little more ornate, ornamental,
and I don't have a lathe yet.
So anyway, this helps me adjust the height,
and then I can spin this to the correct height.
So I drilled this 3 1⁄8 down,
and 964 is the last quarter of an inch,
and then tapped that, threaded that,
so I don't have to tap and thread the whole thing.
There's a little bit of wobble, but that's okay.
I can just rely on that last quarter of an inch.
It makes threading it a lot easier,
and anyway, so that'll be set.
The lead will go in here,
and then my casting of the flower will sit on top.
So I can remove this at any time and hook that up.
So that will hook up, you can pretend here with me
that the clock arm will hang in here,
and that'll be about a four-foot rod, 1⁄2 inch, so.
All right, and I can adjust this to make sure
that we get the timing right on the clock.
Okay, so I can't wait to see these guys right here
sitting on top.
The great wheel's gonna go underneath his leg there.
I did have to bend his leg out slightly to make that work.
I did a little measuring,
and this back part right here, bazanga,
that's what's gonna sit in that little tunnel right there.
Yep, right there.
So this is gonna be really fun,
and I'll just show you what else I've gotta do yet.
This is another pinion.
This one is for the third wheel.
You can see my notes there.
I cut out the escape wheel pinion.
Here's the escape wheel.
And that will sit in the middle.
That'll be glued down.
And then once that one's cut out, that'll sit right there.
And then these will go on these arbors right here.
Uno dos.
So I've been running a drill through these holes first,
and then that way when I feed it into the squirrel saw,
it just goes zip, zip, zip, zip.
And then I can go back and sand the rest of it by hand.
But this is the squirrel saw that I'm using.
This, of course, is a Winn squirrel saw.
Got this off of Amazon.
I have a link in the description.
So far, it's been a great little saw.
I've seen some of the reviews.
Somebody said that this doesn't hardly blow any air.
Yeah, it doesn't seem that way,
but when you're working,
there is no buildup of sawdust right here.
No problem at all.
So you just loosen that bad boy right there.
Just lift it up.
And you have access to remove that.
You just push down on it, and that disengages.
And you can change out your blades.
Lift that up.
You know, you can change your ride height
to help you control the vibration
as the saw lifts up and down.
That'll help you keep it down
so you don't have so much rip on the back.
And what's pretty nice also,
let me lock that back down,
it has this flexible little light.
So you can definitely see.
Lift that up.
Okay.
You can adjust the light where you need it.
I find it works really well.
This is just a 16 inch.
So when it says 16 inches,
oh, let me show you this really quick.
You can slow down the speed,
or you can really get it going.
I like it, it's really nice.
And you can hook up a hose here
if you have some type of air intake.
I just let it pile up.
I really need to get my shop back out
and get this stuff sucked up.
So this is a 16 inch through here.
You can see one, two,
you're 16 inches from the blade turnaround.
So that's what they mean when they say
that's a 16 inch scroll saw.
So you get that much room
between here and the back for clearance,
but it's a win.
And their slogan is remember when, remember when.
So I am enjoying it.
Anyway, if you're interested in one of these,
they're about $117 shipped to your door.
And it's really nice.
I think it came with a couple of blades,
but I ordered a couple of packs
and I'm really happy with it.
So I just wanted to show this really quick.
I put together this,
this is the escape wheel,
escape wheel pinion,
and there's a spacer in there.
So I just constructed that.
This is the pallet.
And on the back here,
this is the crutch.
So I don't know if I can show that here.
Yeah, so to prevent this from splitting,
I have a set screw in here.
What I did was ran a dowel.
I drilled a hole through it
and then ran a dowel rod into it with wood glue.
And after that set,
then I cut and cut the dowel rod.
And then that way,
when I drill into the side of it to put this set screw
for this brass rod,
that arbor,
that keeps that from moving.
This is gonna be connected to the pendulum.
Okay, so the pendulum hangs through here.
There's gonna be an arbor through here.
And then of course this comes up through here
with a brass tube spacer.
And that has a set screw.
So if I try to put a little bit of,
that's the idea.
I think with the clock arms,
pointing at that with the sculpture,
this is gonna be something that's really nice.
Again, if any one of you is interested in doing this,
check out Clayton Boyer's clock designs on his website.
It'll be under lisaboyer.com.
I'm assuming that's his spouse,
but his plans are on there
and you'll see links to some of the other clock videos.
Good times.
So I enjoy looking at them.
I'd like to do a rack and snail
or something that has a lunar dial
to show the phases of the moon.
But you know, this project doesn't call for that.
Maybe in the next one.
Happy days.
I'm very happy with this.
Happy how this is going.
All right guys, thanks.
