Welcome to Economics Explained 2, the long forgotten second channel which I will be
using in 2021 as a dumping ground for things that I think are cool,
but not cool enough to make a 15 minute video about.
Now I know why you're all here, so without further ado,
let's put Argentina on the economics explained national leaderboard.
Starting off with size, the nation has a GDP of 444 billion US dollars,
which is down close on 50% from where it was at its peak in 2018.
Nonetheless, that still makes it the 25th largest economy in the world,
so it gets a 7 out of 10.
GDP per capita has similarly taken a hit.
Argentina was so very close to reclaiming its throne as a fully developed country,
but the most recent economic crisis has knocked that out of reach once again.
With a GDP per capita of 9,890 US dollars,
it's firmly in the developing bucket and it gets a 5 out of 10.
Stability and confidence, yeah, 0 out of 10.
Just be glad I can't make these scores negative.
Growth is interesting and the nation is going to do alright on a technicality.
You see, we base growth off the last 10 years that we have data for,
so in this case 2009 to 2019.
In that time, the nation has shot up and been slammed back down again,
which is part of the reason why it got a 0 out of 10 for stability and confidence.
While it does look like a dark road ahead for Argentina,
by these metrics, its growth has averaged upwards for now, so it gets a 3 out of 10.
Industry is alright.
It's very lucky to have a lot of great farmland,
which still accounts for a large portion of the country's economy,
but overall it has really failed to move into industries
that weren't handed to them by virtue of their natural resources.
It gets a 4 out of 10.
Altogether it gets an average score of 3.8 out of 10,
which is certainly not good at all,
but it does manage to stay out of last place, so well done Argentina.
