Hello YouTube fam, welcome or welcome back to my channel.
If you're new here, my name's Tina and I make videos on lifestyle, home, and DIY projects
every single week.
In today's video, we are going to officially start doing the office makeover.
This is going to be a space that's going to take us a little bit more time because I want
to do a bunch of different projects for this room, and the first thing I want to do is
to create these faux built-in shelves.
This is something that I've always wanted to do and it's always something that I envisioned
in an office space, so we're going to start that today.
I also want to thank Fiverr for sponsoring today's video because they're going to be
a huge help in starting this makeover.
I got to work with a couple of interior designers, so I'm excited to show you guys what we have
in store for the room, and if you haven't already, don't forget to like and subscribe
down below, and now I'm going to take you into the second bedroom slash office.
It's a really big mess, so I'm nervous to show you guys.
Okay, so let's head into the room.
This is our second bedroom.
This actually was all storage up until about maybe an hour ago.
I just spent all this time clearing this out.
We filmed an updated house tour, and in that video, you guys are going to see how bad this
room actually was, but I have a few more items still to clear out.
All of this stuff is actually from the bedroom makeover.
I kind of just threw it all in here after we were done with it.
I'll probably have to use some of these tools again for this project, so I'm just leaving
it in here.
These are actually some boxes that we've had since moving in.
We haven't done anything with them.
So that's got to go once we do the full makeover, and then if you pan over here, this is the
area that we are focusing on for today's video.
I want to add some built-in shelves here, so this is going to be all functional storage
as well as obviously decorative, but I think nothing screams office more than built-in
shelves, so this is where that's going to go.
So that is my goal for this video.
This is going to be the starting point for the makeover, and then once we have that in,
we're obviously going to fill this up.
Oops.
And once we have that in, we obviously are going to fill it up with a desk, a rug, chairs,
everything, including getting rid of that ceiling fan.
So this is what it's looking like right now.
I'm going to go over some of the design plans and show you guys how we're going to get this
done.
So early last week, I got connected with a couple of interior designers on Fiverr to
help me design the space.
Since this is a space that mostly Brian is going to be using, I wanted to get an outside
perspective and make sure that all of his ideas are included in this.
If you're not already familiar with Fiverr, it connects you with freelancers offering
a huge range of services online.
If you need help with video editing, web design, interior design, business, or anything else
in between, they have so many talented freelancers to help you with whatever project you're working
on.
It's kind of like a marketplace to find freelancers, and I love that you can see their portfolios
so you can see their past work and kind of get a sense of their style.
I actually used Fiverr to create the logo that you guys see in the corner of my video,
and it's also on my YouTube channel banner.
So I was able to find a graphic designer who really understood my aesthetic.
And I am someone who can draw and draft up designs, but when it comes to creating professional
graphic designs, I definitely needed help.
So it was really nice to work with a professional, and they totally made it come to life because
I love my logo.
When it came to making over this space, I found a couple of interior designers on Fiverr.
I connected with them, sent over all our inspo photos.
I also sent in measurements of the room and any particular items that we want to include.
So they were able to run with that and make a beautiful design.
And if you do need to make any revisions, you can just chat with them and use the tools
on Fiverr.
If there's any project that you need help with, I would totally recommend using Fiverr.
You can check out all the services with my link down below, and I also have a 10% off
discount code.
So be sure to check that out.
So now I'm going to show Brian the designs, and I know he's going to like them.
So let's see which one he likes best.
Okay, what side do you want to sit on?
I'm nervous!
Okay, so I have Brian here.
I have the designs in front of me, and I'm going to show him two different designs that
I got done.
Okay, so here's the first one.
Oh my god, for me?
This is crazy.
Isn't that so cool how they did that?
Yeah, I think they used shiplap on here.
But look at the lights.
I think that's really cool.
And then look, I asked them to put the armchair that we planned to put in here.
Isn't that so cool?
How'd they do that?
I have no idea how they do it, but it's really awesome.
This is crazy.
Alright, so now I'm going to show him the second design.
Oh my god.
Do you like this one better?
Yes.
This is insane.
Isn't that so cool?
I love the curtains that they use and the rug.
I totally can see myself sitting there and pretending to work.
Pretending to work.
Because it's a lot different than my usual style, so that's why.
You gotta elevate it, and I feel like this really elevates it.
Yay, I'm so glad he likes them!
So we're basically going to take inspiration from both of these and make it our own for
when we actually do the whole space, but I think this is such a great starting point.
I'm kind of speechless right now because this is so crazy, and I know that you're going
to make it look even better than this because you're the most creative person I know.
Wow, this is so nice.
I can't wait.
I honestly can't wait to see what you do with this.
Yay!
Okay, now that we have a plan, let's start building the bookshelves.
We were headed off to Ikea to find the perfect bookshelves, and I'm pretty sure everyone
who's watching this video loves Ikea as much as I do, and I managed only to get what we
needed while we were there.
I had a couple of different options in my mind for this project, but I ultimately went
with the Billy bookcase and also the Oxford doors that go on the bottom half.
Okay, here we go.
I'm so helpful.
Are you back here?
Ooh!
After doing the math, I realized that four of them are the exact length of my wall.
I honestly couldn't believe it because this is going to be perfect to give me that built-in
look.
The shelves are here, and this honestly was so heavy.
Brian is a trooper for bringing this into the house.
So these two are the long bookshelves, and then these two are the metal cabinets, and
then I also have more shelving right here.
I'm really hoping this doesn't take too long, but I'm going to start a timer and see how
long it takes.
After building so many pieces of furniture lately, I almost felt like I could have done
this without any directions.
For once, the directions were not confusing, and this was pretty straightforward.
I also wanted to mention that I realized that the black color of the Billy bookcase is actually
more expensive than the white ones.
It's actually made with better materials and also has a wood veneer finish on the outside.
So for that reason, I'm choosing to keep the original color and not paint it.
I think the wood finish looks really great, and I want to keep that texture on there.
But if you do go with the white versions, I think those are a totally great option to
customize and paint it into whatever color that you want.
So here is the first one built, and it took me 40 minutes to do, which I think is not
that bad considering I had to move the camera and do all the different angles.
This is looking pretty good.
I have to do one more of these and then two of those tall bookshelves.
But inside, I have not yet to add the handles.
I bought some new handles, so I'm going to see if they work for this, but this looks
really good.
And for this project, I'm also choosing to keep the top of the shelves blank rather
than building it up with molding.
We know that this is not our forever home, so when we sell it, I want the next owners
to be able to use this as a bedroom.
I want to make this as easily removable as possible, so when we do move out in the future,
we can take these with us.
Although the molding on top would totally make this look like a true built-in shelf
and also a little bit more luxe, after seeing that first design from Fiverr, I think the
shelves are going to look amazing even without that.
By installing the bookcases to span the entire wall, this is just a great way to get a built-in
look without fully committing.
As I was building these, the vision for the space was really coming together, and I feel
so lucky that I have a dedicated room to film and create DIYs in.
So I'm just really excited for Brian to finally have his own space and get creative
and really make this his own.
We're pretty much working on this room in real time as we're doing this video, so
I still need to finalize some things, but I would love to know in the comments which
of those designs you guys like the best, and if you have any ideas or suggestions, please
leave them down below as well.
So this is where we're at right now.
I am loving how these are looking in here.
I still have to put the doors on these two outside ones, and obviously that doesn't
fit because we have to cut down the baseboard.
But seriously, it makes such a difference.
This already feels like an office room, and I can't wait to put all the things in all
of the doors.
I'm gonna wrap it up here for tonight, and tomorrow I hope we can finish this wall.
Oh my god, it's hailing!
What?
I feel like last time I filmed in the car, I was talking about how nice it was and how
it was finally spring and I could drive with the windows down, and today it is hailing
outside.
That is Chicago weather for you.
So I'm headed to the hardware store today, and I want to get something to create a feature
wall on that back wall behind the shelves.
So I think that looked really good in the mock-up design.
They had a shiplap, but I want to do something different since we just did shiplap in the
bedroom.
So I think that my idea is going to work, and I also want to get a tabletop cut while
I'm there.
This is going to fill in the gap in between the two cabinets in the middle and just make
it look a little bit more custom, so I'm really excited to get this all going today.
And I'll just show you guys what we get once we're there.
I only need two items, I think, so we should be good to go.
Alright, so we're back at home and I have all of my materials.
So the first order of business is to remove the baseboards.
The bottom of the bookshelves actually has a little groove for the baseboards, which
is kind of nice, but it's not tall enough or deep enough to actually fit my baseboards,
and I want to make sure that everything is flush against the wall, so we're just going
to remove that first.
I actually have not removed any of the baseboards around the house yet, so this should be pretty
fun to do.
First, I have to find my pry bar, and then we can get going.
I started by cutting the caulk on the baseboard with a utility knife, and this is going to
allow you to remove the baseboards without pulling off your wall.
And once I scored all the caulk, I used a paint scraper.
You could also use a really thin pry bar here.
And I'm basically just wedging that in between the baseboard and the wall, and you just want
to lift it to pull it off.
I also found that using my mallet really helped out a lot, and once it was good to go, I used
my big pry bar and a scrap piece of wood to get the whole thing off while protecting my
walls from the damage.
Because I used this method, I was able to keep the baseboards intact, so I can save
them and install them later if we need to in the future.
So I knew that our house had plaster walls, but now that I'm seeing it, I think it's just
so interesting.
So you could totally see the layers of wood here, and then they would basically just plaster
on top until it made a nice and smooth wall.
This is all before drywall came along, so it's kind of cool to see my house's age and
also see the uneven edges of the wood floor, and also into these little cracks and crevices.
I just think it's so interesting.
The next thing I want to do in here is to create an accent wall, so I have some pole
wrap here.
This is the first time that I'm using it.
I've seen this all over Instagram, and this is really awesome because it's super flexible,
so you're able to wrap it around things, which is its purpose, but you could also lay it
flat and then use it on a wall, or you could also use it as decorative trim to create a
fluted look.
This is going to be a really cool way to create a slatted wall without having to space everything
out and just use a bunch of these.
So that is my plan right now, and I'm just going to measure everything out and cut it.
Pole wrap is super easy to cut.
You could see that it's just all rolled up, and I use my miter saw to cut it down, and
I basically cut these just enough to cover past the bookshelves.
I do not have enough to cover the entire wall, so I am maximizing these by keeping it a little
bit more cost effective.
This is definitely a little bit more of a pricey material to use, so I want to save
where I can.
Everything's cut and ready to go, so I'm going to start in the center here.
I want to make sure that it's nice and straight, so I'm going to use my level and then a brad
nailer.
The pole wrap is really thin and lightweight, so the nails are just going to hold it on
there really nicely, and you don't need to put any type of adhesive, and this will also
be pretty easy to remove if you ever need to as well.
I see it, I see it.
See what?
Vision.
Am I putting it in the right spot?
Looks like it's in the middle, sure.
I haven't seen pole wrap used as a wall covering before, and I think this is such a quick and
easy way to create a wood slat wall slash a fluted wall.
We just made sure that it was nice and flat and leveled, and with the brad nailer, I just
nailed it into place along the outside perimeter and then also in the center where it needed
it.
I also really wish that they had larger pieces of the pole wrap.
The one that I'm using is just 16 inches wide.
I believe they do sell a 4 foot wide one, but I just cannot find it anywhere, so that
is one con I found about using this material, but overall, I found the pole wrap to be really
easy to work with, and I definitely will be using leftover pieces for future projects.
This fluted look instantly added height to the room, and I love that beautiful wood texture.
You can also choose to stain or paint this.
I just like the wood tone as it is, so we're going to keep that, and now all I have to
do is to add some wood filler to the nail holes, and this is complete.
Okay, you guys, I'm in love.
Look, it's all done.
It's looking really good in here, and it's going to look even better once we put the
shelves in, so I'm going to get those all in place, and then we should be almost done.
Perfect fit.
The last thing I want to DIY for this space is a countertop that will connect the middle
two cabinets together.
The width of the bookshelf is actually 11 inches, so I was able to find a board at 11
inches here, so it's going to fit on there perfectly, and all I have to do is just cut
it to size, which is 63 inches.
This is what we're working with, so I'm going to cut it, stain it, and then seal it.
With my miter saw, I'm cutting it down to size, and I really cannot believe how well
all the measurements for this project worked out.
It just made everything fly by so much quicker.
The piece that I'm using is a common board, so the surface actually is not that rough,
but we of course still need to smooth it out with a sander.
I did a couple of test stains here to see what color I wanted to do this side.
You can barely even tell the difference, but I was thinking of either going darker or matching
it closely, and after putting it together, I think I'm going to try to match it just
so that they are similar looking.
I think that'll look really seamless and nice altogether once it's up, so that's what we're
going to do.
And before we get to staining, I added a wood conditioner on here.
This is going to help us avoid any unevenness or blotchiness that might happen in the staining
process.
So here you're going to see me use hazelwood for the first layer.
This kind of tones down the yellow a little bit, and then afterwards, I just put special
walnut right on top, and I'm doing this all while it's still wet, so it's going to add
some richness to the color without making it too dark.
And then I just wiped it off for a more even coverage.
And after I was done staining, I did add a top coat to seal it all in.
Today is the last day of this project.
I'm going to finish it up, go over some design choices with you guys, and then of course
style and reveal it to you.
We'll also get Brian's reaction, so that's going to be really fun.
My little tabletop's done, so I'm going to put it on top of here right now.
For this video, I actually have not screwed anything into the walls, and I'm going to
save screwing this into the tabletop for when I do the whole makeover.
I will be securing it with some L-brackets on the back, but for now, we're just going
to place it on top and see how it looks.
I ended up just using the knobs that this came with, which is really minimal and black.
Originally, I was going to do these little knobs on here, which are nice and gold and
actually would make this look a little bit more fancy, but after talking with Brian,
he told me he doesn't want too many gold accents in the room.
And since we're still planning out this room, I don't want to overwhelm the space
with too much gold accents, so I'm going to save these and see if we use them during
the makeover.
I really want to use gold and brass in some of the hardware for the light fixtures, as
well as maybe another light fixture right over here.
So that is something that I'm going to compromise on, but you guys know that if it was me, I
would totally do these knobs.
And speaking of gold light fixtures, I did pick up this gold gallery light.
This one's really cool because it is LED, so you can just turn it on and off, and you
can also just charge it right here with a little USB cord.
I saw my friend Peony and Honey post this on Instagram, so I decided to order it for
this space.
I still don't know if I'm going to use it or not, but if you guys can imagine, it would
go somewhere like right here or so.
I think that would look really cool.
I'm still trying to figure out the artwork with Brian, so we're going to see if we end
up using this, but let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
I have to fill up these bookcases, but I don't have a ton of new decor for this space yet,
and I also want to fill it up with a lot of plants.
When we do the full makeover, I'm actually going to have Brian pick out a bunch of the
decor items, so that's going to be a lot of fun.
But for now, we're going to style it and then show you guys how this whole project turned
out.
So I'm with Brian right now, and I'm ready to show him the after, but before we do, remember
what it looked like before?
Ugly.
Yeah, it was not the best.
We cleaned it out, and now it looks so much better.
So okay, before I show you, how do you feel right now?
I'm honestly very nervous because this is going to be the first spot I've had in so
long, just straight dedicated to work and just relaxation.
I know you did a great job, and I'm so excited right now.
So whenever you're ready, you can open the door.
All right, here we go.
You guys ready?
Yes!
No!
Are you serious, babe?
Oh my god.
I'm so glad.
Guess where I put our 10-year-old printer?
Where?
In here.
What?
I had to put it sideways, but this is going to be a game changer to hide all of the ugly
stuff.
This is honestly nuts.
How is this the same room, for real?
Honestly, this was meant to be in here because it fits so well, and I can't wait to style
it to your actual style.
Oh, this is crazy, babe.
This just puts in perspective like what can actually be accomplished in here, and I'm
so excited.
The whole color scheme in here is definitely my style.
Like, look how slick this looks.
I told you guys, he likes those.
This is crazy.
Look.
Wow.
I could do this for an hour straight.
Maybe it's time to frame this shirt right here.
No!
Oh my god, no!
It's how to hang up the jersey.
No, we're going to put it in the closet.
That's what we're going to do.
I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do either.
This is crazy.
I'm glad you like it, though.
Thank you so much, honey.
Love you.
Thank you.
Yay, guys!
We did it!
I can't believe we built this, you guys.
It looks so good, especially as a background, so I might have to start filming in here.
I'm so glad that Brian really likes it, and I can't wait to decorate it to really reflect
his style.
Of course, I wish that I could just keep all of this in here because it looks so good.
Let me know what you think in the comments section, and I really hope this video gave
you some inspo to make some built-ins in your own spaces.
Thank you again to Fiverr for sponsoring today's video.
Don't forget to check out my link down below so you guys can get 10% off, and stay tuned
for when we do the full makeover because I know this room is just going to turn out incredible.
