This is my review of the Wolverine Film to Digital Movie Maker,
which is an 8mm and Super 8mm Real Movie Digitizer.
First, you might be asking yourself, what's a woodworker doing talking about film equipment?
Woodworking is my secondary profession.
My primary trade is in film and video work. I've been doing it now for over 20 years.
Since projects take so long to finish in the woodshop, I figured I'd fill in the gaps
with some reviews of some film equipment I've used.
And this is one of them. This is a device that's meant for
people who have found some 8mm or Super 8mm Reels in the back of a closet
and simply want to watch them.
It's not really meant for film students or you so-called film purists out there.
It retails for about $300.
It digitizes, as I said, 8mm and Super 8mm Reels frame by frame up to 5 inches in diameter.
It scans directly to SD cards up to 32 gigs.
And it converts them into MP4s at 720p at 30 frames per second.
This is its biggest flaw. It takes 8mm Reels, which were shot at 18 frames per second,
and bumps them up to 30 frames per second.
So everybody looks like they're moving really fast.
But you can fix this problem in any non-linear editor.
Every single laptop has got one by now.
So it's really not that hard to reduce the speed.
So I have a reel of Super 8mm right here.
I'm just going to power it up.
Open up the door.
Put your adapter on the red side to accommodate this size reel.
Put your take-up reel on.
What you want to do is roll a little bit ahead.
This will move very slow.
Put the leader underneath the two tabs.
Super 8 tracks very well.
Just hit the menu and then hit the record button.
And there you go.
It'll take 30 minutes to do one reel of 50 foot film.
There are better scanners out there that take upwards of 3.5 hours for one reel of film.
You could have this all done professionally if you wanted to.
But if you were to run 161 reels, which I ran,
at the time I used to do it 10 years ago, it was 12 cents a foot.
That's $6 per 50 foot reel.
So that's about $966 to go through 161 reels.
So if you want to do that, knock yourself out.
But this is a pretty good machine for $300.
We'll do the same thing for you.
