Today I am so pleased to be able to take you on a tour of a typically English country garden.
This beautiful garden belongs to Ivy and John, who are my very best friend Sandra’s parents-in-law. Sandra and I have known each other since we were born - which is now 60 years (yes! We are 60 😍).
Ivy lives just around the corner from both Sandra and I, and as you can see she is an avid gardener. As Sandra explains, she is outside in her garden pottering around practically every day. And it shows.
She has a whole host of beautiful mature shrubs, trees, perennials and annuals. It’s all just gorgeous. I hope you enjoy seeing Ivy’s garden as much as I did.

Hi everyone, I'm Jeanette and I'm here with my very very best friend in the world, Sandra. We've
been friends for how long? Too long. Our whole lives. And we're how old? 60 years. 60. We are 60.
And we're here today in Sandra's mother-in-law's garden. She has a beautiful garden. We're just
going around. Richard's doing the filming for this first part. I'm scanning. And it is gorgeous.
Ivy, her name is. I'm scanning back. Hang on. Ivy is Sandra's mother-in-law. She didn't
want to be in this film but Sandra is stepping in as custodian of the garden.
So here we are in this beautiful garden which Ivy looks after all by herself, doesn't she?
She does. So let's go around. We will not know all the names of the plants
but we can still admire them. She works so hard here. Does she? It's beautiful.
She spends all her time looking after this garden. It shows. And she absolutely loves it.
She's got some bamboo there. In pots because they spread. Yes, that is very good. There are
some bamboos. Apparently, look at that smoke bush. That's gorgeous. There are some bamboos
that don't spread but I'm no expert on bamboos so I couldn't tell you which ones do and which
ones don't. Better to be safe than sorry, I would say. Absolutely. Don't plant them in the ground
unless you really know that they're not going to spread. Absolutely. It's gorgeous. When did
she have this landscape? Because I can tell this has all been landscaped but hardscaped. Two years
ago. It's gorgeous. Let's have a look. See what we can spot. It's difficult to know which way to go
because there's options. Go left. It's beautiful. It is beautiful. I feel bad because I'm not naming
anything. I'll name the things that I do know. I've got that one in my garden. Which one? That
pink one. Yeah. I do know this is an Asa. Japanese maple. Very beautiful. Well looked after obviously
by Ivy. So how long does Ivy spend in her garden would you say? She spends nearly every day in and
out looking at, you know, doing things. She waters it if it's sunny. She just keeps it so
lovely. She spends lots of time but it's good for your mental health. It is. You're so right.
She's got beautiful roses. It is good for your mental health. So we're going to come and do a
of your garden Sandra. I keep saying to Sandra, Sandra's look like just had her garden landscaped
haven't you? And because you had an extension didn't you? Yes but there's few plants because
I'm not a very good gardener. And I keep saying to Sandra, I think we should just have one little
border. A low maintenance border. And I'm trying to persuade her still. Ah we do know this is for
This is a pear tree because I've got one in my garden. Oh wow and she's got pears. She's got
pears already. Conference I think they are. I've got a conference pear but I only planted mine
last spring and it's a baby and it's got a long way to go.
Oh this is the Japanese. Oh Japanese. Japanese garden. Oh I love it. Hence the panda. Oh lovely.
And the buddha. Oh that's so cute. Hence the panda and the buddha. And he's eating bamboo.
Under the bamboo. Eating bamboo. How nice. That is obviously a holly
and an emperor of some description. Very Japanese. Very. It's beautiful and it's
lovely and dark and dense behind there. It does actually go back quite a quite a way further
doesn't it? You can walk right behind. Let's walk behind. I don't think you'll see much.
But it's like a little secret area. Ah this is where they keep all their,
it's the utility area. Now how great is that though? Because it's all hidden away.
We all have these things and we all need to store them don't we?
But that's the back of the garden. They're big poplars and trees. These are very tall.
Need cutting down part of her garden though. Borrowed landscape. Here's the lady herself.
This is Ivy's garden. Ivy has reluctantly agreed to come on film because Sandra and I
are having trouble naming all the plants. So you think I can? Yeah. A pear tree. We've done
the pear tree. We managed to find out the pear tree. So let's go around Ivy. We've done this
this side here and so we're now working around the other side. So what can you tell us?
Fertina or red robin. Oh I have a Fertina red robin. Beautiful. Choisea. Yes. And you've got
beech. Ah this is a beech. Yes. That is beautiful. Actually it is very beautiful
and I know this is a seed I'm all to enjoy in the pot because I have one.
Some beautiful grasses. You have a lot of lovely lovely plants. Rhododendron. Look they've been
drowned. Yeah well they're spring plants aren't they? So by now. Yeah but I get them twice. Do
you? Yeah. And then you get them back. Ah that's the secret. It's beautiful. Nothing on that this
hydrangea. Yeah. Nothing. No. It's funny isn't it? Yeah and I don't know why. And you've got a
lovely tree fern. Yeah. Oh that's lovely. I've been thinking of getting a tree fern.
Peonies. Yep. Yes they're beautiful. Look at that. Look. Oh my goodness. It's a little bit
Cordyline. Is that a Cordyline? Well I didn't plant that. It just appeared. It's a volunteer.
It just appeared. That's lovely. I know. It's beautiful. It just appeared and in the past two
years it's gone like that. Oh wow. Isn't it funny? We tend to these things and we nurture them and
they die and then other things just appear without any help. Another choice here.
It's so nice seeing other people's gardens. Look at this beautiful area. An arch in its making.
Just been set up. Oh really? Yeah it was all cut down because we had all those storms and
the original arch collapsed. Ah. So it's all beautiful. It is. So you've got like two
hearths really haven't you? This is the secret garden. That's strawberries we could have eaten
there. Oh yeah. So is this your little vegetable patch? Well he gave them the strawberries next
to the storm. That was a couple of years ago. They're ripe for picking. And those blackberries
they're lovely. You do get hundreds and hundreds of blackberries. Do you? Right we just got this
site. Oh this is all lovely. Betty Boo. Oh Betty Boo's hiding over there. Betty Boo.
Let's go find Betty. Oh I smell curry there dear. Yeah it's because there's a curry plant there.
There's curry. That silvery one. Oh yes. The one at the back. Really smells of curry.
Beautiful roses. Yeah but we've had the rain and the wind and it's knocked it all down. So that's
my next job. Get that lot out. Beautiful geraniums. Oh you've got poppies I can see.
Betty Boo. How lovely is that? Look at Betty. How did I miss that? Right let's go finish up.
They've abandoned me. They've run away from me and I don't know the names of all these plants.
You have a salvia hotlips and an erysium. More salvia hotlips. One more little thing
that looks. This is a red robin photina. Photinia red robin. With the little pig
and animal corner. How lovely. Thanks so much Sandra for showing us around Ivy's garden.
I'm Jeanette. I'm the Enthusiastic Gardener. Thank you for watching. Take care everyone. Bye.
