Books are wonderful. Hand shadow books are even more wonderful! I'm exploring my collection of books and sharing some of the exercises and characters in them. Today – a clown. This book is published by Tobar.

Well, hello everyone. I think you all know what shadow I'm going to make today. It's
a clown. Ta-da! No, I'm being serious, it is actually a clown. It comes from the Little
Tow Bar book, and that's the clown there. And I know how keen people are on learning
how to make people, so it's good to have lots of different people to make. So here we go.
Here goes the clown. Our book says, give the clown a ridiculously long nose by letting out
the middle finger of your left hand. Make the clown talk by moving the little finger of the
left hand up and down. Perhaps we'll make our clown not talk but laugh. Right, so here we go.
Right hand first, fingers close together, thumb sticking out. Now this is going to be the clown's
pointy hat. So you might want to just play around a little bit with the shape to make a nice hat
shape for the clown. Now the left hand, this is the tricky bit, you're going to hold on to the
right hand with this hand and stick out that thumb. And that makes the clown's hat. And then
stick out the middle finger and the little finger like that. There's our clown. I think the clown
looks a little bit skinny, so I'm going to just make him a little bit bigger and I'm just going
to move towards the light to make his body like that. Now I'm going to give him a ridiculously
long nose. Boing! Boing! Boing! I suggest to him there is the clown. It's fun, isn't it?
There's your clown. You could experiment with lots of different hat shapes for the clown as well.
You could make him have a kind of funny hat like that, for example. Just make sure that the brim
of the hat is always kind of even like that so you don't have one bit of the brim that's too high up.
You could make him just have a cat like that. I like this little round nose that he's got
and that's just because there's a bit of a knuckle sticking out there. He can sniff.
Haha, so much fun you can have with these characters.
Well, I'll come back tomorrow and I may not have a ridiculous nose on him.
