Hey friends, Deanna here with Homestead and Chill. It's the first week of spring and it just dawned
on me that it's been over seven months since we've done a garden tour video here. We've done
so much in that time. So I basically just wanted to show you around today, show you what we've
accomplished, the projects we've been up to, and essentially reveal our brand new garden space to
you. Even though if you've been following along on Instagram you've probably seen a bit of it
already. And just in case you're new here, we moved to this homestead about nine months ago now
or in last July and we've been working diligently ever since to make it our own. This property is
about two and a half acres but I want you to keep in mind that we came from much more modest
size property in the past. We were gardening on just under a fifth an acre or about 9,000 square
feet but still had it stuffed full with raised garden beds, plant for pollinators, fruit trees,
and all that good stuff. So as we're wandering around today I want you to keep that in mind that
a lot of the things that you'll see can easily be scaled down to much smaller garden spaces.
So let's go take a look around. Okay so here's the existing or older garden space. We'll go in there
in a moment. I'll show you what's going on there but I think we'll start over with the new garden
because I think that's probably what most folks are excited to see and what I'm most excited to
share. So if you recall this was just all a big dirt area. I'll actually find a clip of an old
video to clip in here to show this whole field before but it was just like a weedy gopher mound
mess. A couple plans for the future just to point out the main new raised bed garden area is going
to be out in that sunny field. Well the sun's going down now because it's late it's almost
seven right now but I'll point out where we're going to put some new raised beds or a lot of
raised beds over there. We'll probably have a few hammock swings or something because those trees are
just asking for a hammock swing right and then if you see these stakes on the ground this is where
I had started to kind of line out where potential raised beds would be and so the idea is that we
would have a pathway coming down that black fence there out here probably have like some kind of
and then transition all of this space to raised garden beds from here way over to the corner
maybe fading out into not having you know as many down in that corner because it does get a little
bit more narrow and so we had put in this steel edging border and gravel and new pathway down here
and the whole new raised garden bed area. Here's a view from over here
hanging out sitting in these hammock chairs it's definitely a nice view now
and the most recent addition is this in ground flower border of perennial plants that we just
did last weekend to celebrate the start of spring. So in there we have all kinds of different
perennials for pollinators like yarrow and salvias and lavenders and milkweed. I put a
couple artichokes in there, lantana, some hummingbird sage, all kinds of good stuff so
that's just going to look so beautiful once it's in bloom and I'm also adding a few little like
paver pathways. There'll be two pathways that go through this space to kind of break it up
and it'll be easier to get in there to you know do maintenance and pruning and things like that
but then yeah here's the whole new raised garden bed area. So there's a total of I think 19 raised
beds. We did a little planting area over here nothing's really growing in yet because we
planted all this in winter so it's just kind of coming back to life in spring.
Yeah so all these beds are four by eight heart redwood. I did a whole tutorial on how to build
them as well as the drip irrigation. You can see the drip lines.
