ORCHID TOUR with Care Tips & CREATIVE DESIGN TIPS
Nov 2, 2022
Hi everyone, my name is Irene and welcome to my channel Living Around.
I'm really excited here because after nearly two years I'm back in my hometown in Sarawak
and today I'm taking you with me to an orchid garden in Kuching.
Now Sarawak is a very rich land with a high diversity of plants and it is said that about
one third of our flowering plants here are endemic to Sarawak. So I think we'll be seeing
some very interesting orchids here. Let's go. Hi Mandy. Hi. So nice to meet you. Nice to meet you
too. Thank you so much for hosting this tour for me and showing our viewers more about Sarawak
orchids. Okay let me tell you briefly about Sarawak orchids. So this orchid park is owned by
government then it is occupied for 15.4 acres. 15.4 acres. Yes. So this place is for the educational
and recreational. Educational means for the students to learn. Recreational means for the
around here. So educational as well as people can come here for special occasions.
Like shooting your wedding. Yes. And your graduation photos. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
There's all sorts of things that are coming here. Why people come here because it's free of charge.
No fees. This park is completely free. That is very interesting to the people. You see. So Mandy
can you share with us how this orchid garden in Kuching is different from the one the others.
Okay because why it's different from others. The difference is between because we are
planting this orchid by our own. Then it's flowering here. Then we take that plant
transport to that bed. We didn't take from other just had other contractor whatever. Okay. The
plant is flowering here and growing here. That's why this is very special. But unless it's very
hybrid one then we import. Okay. Okay. So how many types of orchids we have here Mandy.
Okay. So far now we have 80 gender. Means it's from the mother plant. Okay. Then now is for now
is 82 species. 82 species. No. No. 82,000 species. 82,000 species. Yeah. Wow. And out of that how
many is from Sarawak. So mostly from Sarawak is here is mostly from Sarawak actually. Wow.
From Sarawak and I mean from Borneo. Not only Sarawak. From Borneo. Okay. From Borneo. Border
this all around Sarawak. Around Kalimantan. Yes. It's considered Sarawak too. Okay. So but we never
say Sarawak is called Borneo. Okay. Actually I'm not very familiar with orchids. So I like to ask
you a bit about their care. I see that they are mostly in charcoal. Is this 100% charcoal you
plant orchids in? Here we use charcoal. But more important charcoal is very very good for the
orchid actually. Because orchids need more water. Okay. That's why we in the orchid park we use
this charcoal. Ah. But they don't like to be soggy and too wet. Yeah. These are then not too wet,
not too dry. So this could be 100% charcoal or mixing with some brick. 100%. This is 100%.
We use 100%. Ah okay. But underneath is a little bit of a stone. Stone. Underneath this stone to
prevent the grass to grow up. Okay. A little bit of stone. But cover is all charcoal. Okay.
Mandy these are so magnificent and red. Can you tell me more about these orchids? What what are
they? So this is a very easy to grow in the full sun. So it cannot grow in the indoor plant because
it needs more sun. Ah. This that's why it's very special here. Okay. So this also is not
produced all the year round flowers. Okay. Just like now is September. You produce September,
October, start from July they produce the flower. Ah. And it will last three months
for the flowering. So it flower once a year but last three months. Yes, exactly. I come at the
right time to say that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Can you share with us what is the fertilizer
you're using? We are using a liquid fertilizer. Okay. Just sunlight crystal. Then we dilute it,
we mix it in the same volume what we are needing. So we mix in a big tong,
that we give big tong. So we do fertilizing once a week in Monday. So once a week in for the
flowering. Once a week for leaf. Oh, you use a different fertilizer to induce the leaf and then
the foliage. Yes, different, different fertilizer. Okay. Flowering for flower is different. For
leaf is different. That's why the leaf is very rotated. Hey Mandy, this looks like an orchid
from my childhood days that I remember. What is this? This is a dancing lady. Ah, okay. So this
is very popular among the childhood auntie now. So people prefer that because it's like dancing
like this also. Actually there are so many species about it but this one of them is very common here.
Okay, is this also from Sarawak? Yeah, this is from Sarawak. Ah, okay. And these are also
planted mostly in charcoal? Yeah, yeah. No, no. This is the first thing inside is a little bit
charcoal. Then a little bit sphagnum moss. Sphagnum moss. Okay, okay. So they protect a lot
here. You see the baby here? Yeah. You see this is very not long already. This I think for more
than one year. They produce a lot of shoot now because it means that they grow faster because
of what we do maintenance fertilizer. Something like that. This is very easy to multiply actually.
Very easy to grow too. Once you cut this one, you can grow. You see? Oh yeah, that's like the anak.
Yeah, anak. Okay. You see the shoot there? Yes. Actually that's a very interesting way to display
the orchid. This is so interesting. It's like you just put pieces of wood all around and then you
mount it. Yeah, yes. Then we tie with this one. This is special string. A very soft one that
didn't harm any orchid. So this they cannot use other string. Otherwise, it harms the stem.
This is the only one that is a very suitable one. Very soft. Then it can last under the hot sun too.
It looks like an orchid tree now. Yeah, yeah. Oh wow.
Yeah, this is bird nest. We call bird nest fern. It's a jungle also. Bird nest fern. Yeah,
bird nest fern. You also plant bird nest fern and charcoal. Yeah, you plant it. It will grow.
Grow with charcoal too. Wow. Okay.
This is kapur. I don't know what it's definitely. It's kapur tree. For people to do the
blanket. When they produce, they will plant here under this one. They will collect.
Oh Mandy, this is such a beautiful structure. I like how you have this
wood that's so old and full of character. And all these orchids are growing around.
This is what we call beryllium tree. Sometimes it collects from the downstream.
This will last a long time ago. Do you mean it's big in the river also? Yeah,
this is inside the river. Collect from the river. Collect from the river, okay. Yeah.
Very suitable for the root. You see the root is planting. They just spread here and there.
We tie it like this. This is the string that I showed you just now. Oh yeah. Yeah. Everything
tied. Then it's tied tightly. Okay. Then we spray every morning. Fertilizing. That's it.
When you first put the plant on it, do you have to put sphagnum moss?
We put a little bit of sphagnum moss. Either orconut fiber also can. Ah, okay. Nice.
So magnificent. Oh Mandy, this looks like an art piece. I love how this is draping all around.
What plant is this? This is called the crepus. So this is one of the how to deco our woods.
You see? So it looks very nice when we deco a lot of things. This is the only orchid.
This is the tiger orchid. Tiger orchid. Okay. So we could planting everything inside of this.
This look very antique when we see. Yes. Very creative actually. Yeah. It's a nice living
piece of art. They can like this, like this. They will cover. So bushy. Yeah. That look very nice
when it come to bushy. You see? All right. Nice. So good idea for our own landscaping.
Mixing creepers, hanging plants together with orchids. Yes, exactly.
Mandy, this is some kind of an orchid as well? This is a family orchid, but we didn't call it
orchid. This we call it subrogatus. This from the Sarawak jungle too. So we had different type
of flowers. You see? They had different flowers. They got pink. They got yellow. Yes. These are
very nice and bright. Yellow. They are terrestrial plant. Yes. They are terrestrial plant also.
But also the same, you use charcoal and brick. Yeah. This grow well in the charcoal too,
because it's according to the habitat in the jungle. Okay. And it likes filtered light.
They like humid, a little bit humid. High humidity. They cannot in the full sun,
because in the jungle also they grow in the humid area. Okay. Mandy, where should we go now?
After this, we go to the cold house, because at the cold house there, we can see a lot of
different type of hybrid plant. In the cold house, it is 23 degrees. The plant that consume
very cool place. Okay. It's indoor plant. Indoor orchids. Yes. Cold house, they require much lower
temperature. Yes, exactly. Okay, let's go. Let's go. Oh my God, Mandy. This is huge.
This is so huge. This is... I'm not sure what it is. Some aroid. I think it's anthurium. If you
guys know what is the name of this plant, do let us know. This is so... Oops. Oh my God.
Wow. This is an amazing, amazing collection. Very amazing. And oh my God, this is variegated.
Yeah, this is variegated. Come here. You see? This is a little bit of variegated. You see? Wow.
This is a philodendron, I think. It's amazing. There's a variegated philodendron in an orchid
farm. And wow. Okay. This is entirely green from the same plant, but this one is so beautiful.
Wow. The young one is also very nice. You see? The young produce.
Wow. This is very valuable, Mandy. Lovely. You need to put a fence around this plant.
This is mostly for people to do the shooting here. That's why we put it.
Mandy, this is like heaven. This is wonderful. So tell us more about this
cold house. This cold house is the place where we keep the plant that is mostly hybrid.
Hybrid. Yeah. That can withstand the temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Okay. So the plant here
is come from the Borneo or Sarawak, either Sarawak. But mostly, it's already all the
majority is hybrid. So the most I want to show to you is Sbalina. This is very nice.
Balinese Sbalina. It's from the Lundu. It's from the north of Sarawak. Lundu,
inner Lundu from Sarawak. Small, it's very fibrous. You see? Did they call it normal?
Yeah, normal orchid, but the scientific name. Yes.
This is a species from Sarawak? Yes, this is from Lundu, Samatan Lundu.
I need to smell it. Oh, so beautiful. Very nice. This last long also. So now,
I want to tell you this amazing too. You see here? How amazing this one. You see? The flowers
very big. This is not Vanda? Vanda, but the vernacular name is Apple. It's a species from
Vanda. The flowers can last for three months or so. It will fall down. So very healthy, you see?
And actually, there's no substrate, not even charcoal.
No, because it can grow like this. We just produce a fertilizer.
Okay. And water frequently,
because it needs much water. We must water it like this, the stem, you see? When you water it,
it will be very, very healthy. So fat. The roots are so fat.
Fertilizing. What I told you just now, we have two types of fertilizer. One for flowering,
one for leaf. Okay, good. Oh, Mandy, this is so pretty, so sweet looking.
What is this one? This is called Bandas. So the leaves, the flowers is very small when compared
to the big Bandas. But the flowers is very, very fragrant, very good smell. So this will last for
three months or so. Okay. This we call Bandas too, but this, the leaf is quite big. So the tip
is different from the other one just now. So this also hybrid. So some filtered light and then
no media, but just spray with fertilizer once a week. Yes, exactly.
Okay. All right, good. How many times a year you expect this to flower?
Okay. It depends on your maintenance, but it will flowering all year round. If you do
maintenance in a better way, fertilizing, watering, and also something like if you got
that this is called, we can cut this rooting. This should be cut off. If not, otherwise it will
rotten. It will not produce a nice one. It should be cut. Oh, so whenever it doesn't look good,
the roots should cut it off? Yes, otherwise it will stop the new one to produce. So it's better
you cut this dead, then it will produce a new one. Encourage? Yes, encourage to grow.
All right. So it will grow like this. See how nice like this, I can produce. So this is,
this I can produce, shoot, like this. If you don't cut this one, they not produce.
Okay. This thumb inside the, this way.
Temendy, this one looks really special, the color.
Yes, because the flowers make it special. So you see the upper part is different from the
banana that I show you. So here also different. So this one also hybrid. So this one also already
exposed to the world. Okay. So we cannot say this one is already stuck here, no. It's already in the
market already. So how healthy is this, you see? The shoot, you see?
So fat. It's very, very healthy. This one is something you should cut?
This one should be cut here. Cut where?
Cut here. You see? So this will produce like this. If not, you cut, it will not produce anymore.
Like this, you see, this already dry. So we cannot depend on this anymore. Otherwise,
it will not growing very well. So you think these are not good anymore,
these ones? This one coming good. This still good,
but this not much water. So this thing need much water. This one we need to spray like this all the
while because orchid need some water. So this can be put in the inside indoor plant, indoor plant.
Between got a little bit of sunlight, a little bit of air con.
Okay. Makes air con.
Oh, Mandy, look at this. This is so beautifully put together.
Okay. This is like the true nature. Nature like this jungle. This can be used for landscape.
So... Oh my God, look at this. This is so beautiful.
This from nature jungle. The branches.
Yes, the branches from jungle. And then you have these things to creep and hang.
Creepers. And the hoopers here.
This is the phone too. This very nice creepers too. How nice is it?
Wow. This is like nature in the jungle.
It feels so magical. Yeah.
Thank you so much, Mandy. I know you have a lot of work to do and you got to rush back.
Thank you so much for this tour and hosting me around today.
Okay. Thank you. You're welcome. Next time if you get anything, you can ask me.
Okay. Bye.
All right. Great. Thank you. Bye-bye.
