Franz Xaver Wolf (fl. 1790-1810)

German composer. Almost nothing is known about his life. François-Joseph Fétis in his 'Biography Universelle' introduces him as a musician of the Prussian Hohenlohe regiment whose was flourished in the second half of the 18th century and played several woodwind instruments. The composer mentioned by Fétis is also mentioned there with his Opus 1 (2 serenades for 2 clarinets, horns and bassoons each, printed by André in Offenbach in 1795). In the database of the International Lexicon of Music (RISM), Franz Xaver Wolf is listed with 45 works including marches, masurks and Janissary music. Since almost all members of the Hohenlohe regiment came from Pfedelbach, Bartenstein and Schillingsfürst, it can be assumed that Franz Xaver Wolf also came from Hohenlohe. As a result of Napoleon's military campaigns, he may have been stranded in Silesia and eventually settled there. #ClassicalMusic
