MODERN SCANDINAVIAN LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER E-DESIGN Neutral Decorating Ideas
Hey guys and welcome back! If you're new here I'm Hunter from Hunter's Designs
and today I am taking you behind the scenes of a recent client project of mine.
Now this client in particular found me right here on YouTube after seeing some of my other
eDesign videos and she also loves the modern Scandinavian design style which if you've been
here you know that's my jam. And just to jump right into it today here are some current pictures of
her living room that I was looking at and we also worked on her kitchen but I will save that
probably for another video. But just so you know here is what I came up with for her kitchen,
here's the before, and then here is an after. And we played around with the design a little bit
so there are a bunch of things but like I said I can break that down in another video.
But for the living room we discussed that she wanted a light colored u-sectional,
she wanted to be able to seat a lot of people, at least eight people, but maybe not have such
bulky furniture like she has right now. And then she also wanted a coffee table instead of an
ottoman, they've had ottoman for a long time. And then she wanted to keep the family sign
on the wall for wall decor. And then lastly another big thing was doing something different
on the wall where the TV was. Overall she really likes unique choices in her home,
she likes to keep it minimal, and they're very homebody, family centric, so being comfortable
at home was really really important for them. Before getting started I really took some time
to look at her Pinterest boards, try to get inside of her head for where she wanted the design to go,
what she gravitated towards. And so by looking at her Pinterest board I definitely found some
common denominators and that also really helped with the color palette that I decided on for the
With all that in mind, the first thing that I did was I took their current tile in their home,
which was this warm colored tile. The first thing that I noticed when looking at the living room
was that the window could use some oomph. So the window didn't have any treatments on it,
etc. I only saw the blinds. So the first thing, like the very first thing that I saw when I
looked at the living room was that I wanted to frame the window. I knew she liked black,
so I went with a black curtain rod and I put that on top and then I added white nice flowy curtains,
which I love white curtains, any neutral colored curtains, just because I think they're so
versatile. So I thought that framed the window so nicely. And then from there, the next thing that I
wanted to do was take into consideration the biggest piece of furniture in the room, which
would be the sectional. She wanted a large sectional and the thing that she wanted for
sectional, she wanted left to be a chase and then she wanted the right to be like a U sectional. So
it's not a complete U sectional, but it's part chase, part U. I like this one because it's very
versatile for furniture. It gives you some separation because her home is very long,
so she has that kind of divider in the room, but also it's not too bulky on the other side of the
room because it's a part chase. So for the sectional that I did find was from interior
defined, which I just discovered interior defined not too long ago and I absolutely fell in love with
them. I love how customizable they are. They, you know, from like the width of your sectional to the
depth of your cushions to what the cushions are made out of, the fabric, the colors of the legs,
I absolutely loved them. So I thought it would be perfect to find a sectional for her needs from
interior defined. So that's what I plugged into the design with a very light colored fabric because
she did want to keep the interiors bright. And then the next thing I wanted to do was find a
contrasting coffee table. And so when I looked for coffee tables, I wanted to find a nice big
square one and that was in a warm wood tone. So I found this one from Pottery Barn, which by the way,
I absolutely am obsessed with this coffee table. I absolutely love it, but not only for the color
and the style of it, but also for the inside of the coffee table is storage. And listen,
we all need extra storage in our homes. So I love this coffee table. And with the sectional
and the coffee table in place, I wanted to find a large rug to ground the space. And at first,
my idea was to put a black rug underneath of the sectional, just because a lot of the Pinterest
inspiration that I was seeing, the main color palette was black, white, wood. And so I thought
I had the light colored curtains and light color sectional and then the wood coffee table. So I
thought maybe let's throw some more black in there. And so I found this beautiful black rug from CB2
with this white detailing in it. And she actually ended up loving this rug, but later at the end,
they did decide they wanted a lighter rug, which by the way, I'll make sure to link everything down
below for you, just in case you do see anything that you like in this e-design. But the next thing
that I wanted to do was layer some lighting. So I added a black floor lamp to the left of the
sectional, which arches over. And I thought that was really nice and cozy. And then on the right
side, I did a wood table to tie in with the coffee table with a white lamp. So not doing too matchy
but also still layering the lighting and working with the color palette of wood, white, and black.
The next component that I worked on for the design was the decor pillows. And because my client
wanted to keep the space very light and bright, and she wasn't too big on patterns or having lots
of things, so I knew she liked to keep it pretty low scale and pretty minimal. So one of the things
that I did find were some neutral decor pillows. And because she wanted to keep them minimal and
I didn't want to go overboard with any colors, I just stuck to neutral, low pattern decor pillows.
And I did incorporate some of the black by putting a black lumbar pillow in the middle.
And then I put a dark gray throw blanket on the right. I didn't want to do a black throw blanket
just because I didn't want everything just to be one color or, you know, you get the point. I wanted
to mix it up a little bit. And I really like how you have this triangular effect with the color.
So you have the black floor lamp, you have the black lumbar pillow, and then you have the dark
gray or, you know, dark colored throw blanket. And you also have the black in the curtain rod.
So I guess that's not a triangle anymore. It's more of a odd shape. But either way,
the color was repeating. It was being introduced into the space. So I thought that worked out
really nicely for the design and the color palette. And then for a few details on the
coffee table, I just added some black, white, and beige books with a plant. But with anything
with coffee table decor, you can really do anything. And then I added an olive tree on
the left just because I always like to introduce some foliage to the design. And then for the wall
in front of the sectional, my client, like she said, she wanted to do something on this large
wall that they had with the TV and the fireplace. So I really went back to Pinterest, her Pinterest
board, just to see, you know, if she had saved anything regarding a TV wall. And one of the
things that I found was this stone fireplace that I thought, oh my gosh, like that is going to be
perfect for this design. So I actually plugged and chugged it into the design. I liked this because
it was a statement, like it was, it was a moment on the wall, if you will, a very large moment.
Because the wall is so big, I felt like she needed something kind of what I did with the
window where I framed it with the curtains. I felt like she needed to frame the TV and fireplace to
make it its own thing. I wanted to put the stone on there to create that moment on the wall to
not only have a home base for the TV and the fireplace, but also so that way everything
wasn't being eaten up by this large wall that she did have. With that, she did mention that she had
this fun, unique vaulted part in her ceiling. So I'll put the photo here so you see it. And one of
the questions she'd had for me was how to decorate this space. The idea that I had was to actually
take the design all the way up into that vaulted spot. At first, I put stone into the design that
I plugged and chugged that fireplace, but then we also explored maybe a slat fireplace or a fluted
fireplace. So for the e-design, what I did, for example, the slat wall, I took it all the way up
to show her what it would look like if she did it in the vaulted part. And then as far as like the
rest of the vaulted part that didn't have anything, I would just do some clusters of decor vases or her
favorite decor, but I really wouldn't do too much because I think that not every space needs to be
decorated. And I just thought taking the design all the way up was not only floor to ceiling flow,
which I'm always an advocate for, but also just created a really unique moment in her home,
which she wanted unique, so that's pretty unique. And just so you can see on the different design
ideas, here were the different ways that I did the fireplace. So definitely comment down below
and let me know which way was your favorite for the fireplace. And for the last part of the design,
because this wall is so large, there was more room for something to be done to the wall,
but again, not doing too much that it's cluttered and it looks weird or anything like that. It was
a perfect opportunity to add two large black framed mirrors on both sides of the fireplace.
It adds symmetry. It reflects more light in the space, which she did want to brighten up the space
a bit more. So mirrors are always a great way to do that. And then to kind of add to it and layer
a little bit, I added two floor vases on both sides, kind of in between the mirror and the
fireplace. So that way it was kind of nicely layered. I think based on all of her inspiration
from Pinterest and the direction that she wanted to take the design, I would definitely say that
this e-design nailed it. And I'm also happy to report that she's really happy with the design.
She was really happy to have an example to show her husband of what the room could like. And then
she also showed her contractor too, so she could get started on making these changes in her home,
which is really, really incredible. So if you would like to work with me and you'd like to
have your room designed by me, definitely see more about that in the description below. I would love
to work with you and make this happen for your home as well. So definitely see more about that
below. I will link everything down below for you just in case you did see anything that you liked.
And with that, I will see you next time. Thanks so much for watching. Bye guys.
