Hi guys, welcome to my YouTube channel. My name is Emma and these are my allotment diaries.
An allotment plot is a piece of land rented by an individual to grow food and flowers on. The
rules can vary from site to site, usually it requires most of the land to be cultivated but
other than that, it's all yours.
Doesn't work at all, look what I've done.
Look what I've done.
No, it's not bloody straight.
But we don't want it straight anyway, don't we?
Now, I wouldn't consider myself to be a gardener.
In fact, before I got my plot, I'd barely been able to grow cresties.
But here I am, sowing stuff, growing stuff, doing DIY, learning on the job, without anyone around to tell me how I should be doing it.
And it feels amazing.
Okay, I didn't say it was easy.
Life is a winding road.
Of course, my allotment plot is so much more to me than just a piece of land rented by an individual.
It's my safe place, my sanctuary, a place where I can figure stuff out on my own.
And that's really new for me.
I became a mum when I was only 23 years old and so most of my life has just been spent looking after other people.
So when I got my allotment plot, it was the first time in a long time that there was something in my life that was just for me.
The allotment plot has taught me so much about myself and about life as well.
In particular, it's taught me how to deal with nature and wildlife.
Though I have to admit, that has been one of my biggest hurdles.
I'm not cut out to have an allotment. I've decided I'm not cut out for this.
There's a fox watching me.
During the early days of my allotment plot, I was visited by one particular fox.
And this fox kind of taught me a lot about nature, about myself, and I have a lot to thank him for.
It looks evil.
It looks like it hates me.
Why are you giving me evils?
It's my hat.
Bloody fox got back in, didn't he?
I better protect him from bloody fox.
Bloody fox.
There's a saying that goes something like, if you do something you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life.
And I think that applies here.
So it's always something I thought I would do in my life, but here we are.
Spreading peanut butter on a toilet roll.
A lot of people would have looked at my little piece of land, at the patch of mud and half dug out blackberry bush canes,
and seen it as this enormous burden.
But even when life was at its most hectic, I never once saw my plot as that.
It was always this shining little beacon of hope, patiently waiting for me to come and bring it to life.
So no, it's not just a piece of land.
