Elon Musk just announced something beyond our minds.
SpaceX plans to launch the largest and most powerful vehicle in the world.
Will this be the most robust vehicle the world has ever seen?
And will the mission conducted by SpaceX be successful?
Join us as we explore all the crazy details about the Starship Super Heavy and its mission.
The Largest SpaceX Vehicle
It happened for the first time that SpaceX stacked both stages of its next-generation
Starship rockets. It has made the most prominent and powerful vehicle ever seen by the world.
But this is not the first time, as SpaceX has surprised us a few more times before.
SpaceX has already revealed the demonstration of three other fully-stacked Starships.
The first was in August 2021, while the others were followed in February and March 2022.
Elon Musk has given up on the upper stage of the Starship in Super Heavy prototypes.
These prototypes were considered a candidate for the first orbital attempt of the rocket.
He also announced that Booster 4 and SN20 would soon be given to the retirement yard,
as they've started their test on the Booster 7 and the Starship 24.
SpaceX is finally confident enough to combine the B7 and SN24 to take it a step further.
This step is said to be the most demanding stage of the testing process.
Recently, SpaceX has taken a step back from all the recent Starships and Super Heavy prototypes
because they have a new plan – to catch a rocket stage in the mid-air.
To achieve this goal, it has made a launch tower that is 145 meters tall
with three gigantic robot arms on it. Out of these, they have kept two of the arms identical.
It makes a sort of claw shape that might come in handy around hovering rockets to stop the
need for landing legs. If this is not enough to impress, there will also be a third arm swing.
It will be connected to the Starship's upper stage to the launch pad's power propellant
and gas supplies.
Successful Missions by SpaceX
The 11th of October was one of the luckiest days for SpaceX.
On this day, it made its third attempt to test the vehicle.
SpaceX was successful in moving the arms into place under the SN24.
This Starship was then slowly lifted for about 80 meters off the ground
and moved over to Booster 7 and lowered on top of the first stage.
The company then spent two hours securing the two stages together.
Soon, SpaceX took a step further and started its cryogenic testing.
These testings were done in April and May 2022,
where there were eight spin primes of the Raptor engines.
There were also some static ire of those same engines.
Recently, SN24 tested all its Raptor engines and the tests were successful.
Elon Musk has revealed that Booster 7 and SN24 will complete the full-stack
wet-dress rehearsal once everything is in order.
The company has also planned to load the prototypes with 5,000 tons of liquid oxygen
and methane propellant.
Then, they will run it through the launch countdown.
The wet-dress rehearsal is made to be more identical to the launch attempt.
If this goes well, they will be able to ignite all
33 Raptor engines that are installed on the Super Heavy B7.
It will make them the most powerful liquid rocket the world has ever tested.
It is also stated that even if the 33 engines never reach more than 60% of the maximum thrust,
they could easily break the Soviet N1 record.
That rocket has a record of 4,500 tons of thrust at sea level.
All of this proves that SpaceX will soon push the envelope by several measures,
and the success is far from guaranteed.
They are still not sure if SpaceX would carry out the full wet-dress rehearsal
or a 33-engine static fire.
However, if we look at the history of SN24 and Booster 7,
it is assumed that they will simply be deviating from the norm.
They would deviate if they did not slowly build up to the major milestones with the smaller tests.
SpaceX has also planned to attempt one more interim static fire
with fewer than 33 engines before the first full test.
The First Orbit Launch
If everything goes according to the plan,
there is a high chance that SpaceX will prepare for the first orbital launch.
It would be done without unstacking the rocket.
There are some issues to address and some repairs to be done,
but the path is expected to be more circuitous.
It would still end with an orbital launch attempt by the end of this year.
The Cosmo officials have come up with a more flexible tone with NASA
after the successful launch of the Crew Dragon spacecraft.
On the launch of the Crew-5 mission from Kennedy Space Center on October 5,
Sergey Krylkov suggested his point of view.
He said that there should be longer-running
cooperation between the US and Russia in civil space.
He was talking about the hampering cooperation because Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
The barter agreement signed in July gave NASA astronaut Frank
the right to fly into the International Space Station.
The deal was exchanged between the Soyuz and the Crew Dragon mission in 2023-24.
The manager of NASA also revealed that the agency is all set to extend this agreement
to cover the Boeing CST-100 Starliner.
He said that if we extend the space station and get a partner across the board agreement
to extend the past 24, we will also extend the agreement.
On September 30, NASA announced that it had permitted the astronauts Scott Tingle
and Mike Fink as the commander and pilot to that mission.
The third astronaut is named Jeanette Epps.
That means that there is only one seat for the Russian cosmonaut
or astronaut from another ISS partner.
The Final Agreement
NASA and the US State Department, along with the Foreign Ministry of Russia,
completed the agreement.
Due to this, Dmitry Vergosen threatened to abandon the ISS.
NASA reported to them by pushing the agency to have a professional relationship
and continue operating the ISS.
In July, it was announced that Russia would end its cooperation with the ISS after 2024.
It was the date they had agreed to operate the station.
However, Krylov later stated that they had already talked to the international partners
and the specialists in Russia.
Now they will see how long the station can fly in the future.
He also thinks that the technical constraint is the most significant limitation for now.
Even at the conference in Paris,
the administrator of NASA talked about how there would be a professional relationship
between NASA and Roscosmos.
Meanwhile, Russia is continuing to study plans for its space station,
but their work is still in the early phases.
Although a final decision has not been made,
they will keep flying to the International Space Station until it is built.
