Hey everyone, how's it going?
It's Ryan from the Y and I know I haven't posted a video in a while
But it feels good to be back. While I was away, without a doubt, one of the best movies
I watched was Parasite. It just had everything I find enjoyable in a movie, complete with the ending
you just had to love. I knew I had to do something on it, so here it is.
25 facts you didn't know about Parasite.
Ram-don, or Chapaguri, is a popular dish in Korea that's made by combining two different types of instant noodles
Black bean and spicy seafood. The original name of Chapaguri was so hard to translate that they just decided to combine the words
Ramen and Udon to come up with Ram-don. Bong Joon-ho commented on the dish and said
This is something the kids like regardless of the rich or the poor
But the rich wife couldn't stand to see her kid eat this cheap noodle, so she had to add sirloin topping
This short six-second jingle is actually a very popular song in Korea that many schoolchildren use to help them memorize things
Bong chose the part of a tutor for two main reasons
Firstly he realized it was the only way that two people on opposite ends of the class spectrum could convincingly meet
Also while he was attending university
Bong was a tutor for a very rich family, a job he got after his girlfriend, who is now his wife,
recommended him. He talked about his experience saying
One thing you can't miss in Parasite is the
socioeconomic divide between the wealthy Park's and the penniless Kim's
Every piece of furniture in their house illustrates that very fact
So it's no wonder that all of it was custom-made for the movie. That includes the multi-level coffee table
Which had to be designed with the requirement of being able to hide three people underneath it
Bong directed both Snowpiercer and Parasite, so I'm pretty sure this was put in as an easter egg
But song's name is Namgoong and Snowpiercer, the same as a certain architect in Parasite
In the closing credits the first song that appears was actually written by the director Bong Joon-ho
And you wouldn't guess who he got to sing it
Yep, the voice you hear is none other than the lead actor Woosik Choi
If you listen to the lyrics the song begins after the events of the film and
Talks about the son as he works a manual labor job in the hopes of one day buying the house
The work is exhausting and relentless and every night he fills his glass up with soju and cries the pain of utter hopelessness away
Bong Joon-ho explained that this song was meant to be an extension to the ending of the movie and sadly the song
Represents that the son would have to work for
564 years in order to buy the house
Both song and chick had no idea what the roles would even be
Before they agreed to sign on that really just goes to show the faith and trust that they had in Bong
And I think it's safe to say he definitely earned that trust in the end
The original title of the movie was going to be Decalcomania
Which is the practice of painting an image on one side of a paper and then folding it over on top of itself
Causing a reflection of the original drawing Bong Joon-ho explained that when you look at the final product both images look pretty identical
But upon further inspection the tiny differences really become more apparent
He thought that in a sense this explained the two families perfectly
Bong Joon-ho had an encounter with Harvey Weinstein all the way back in 2012 and no not that kind of encounter
But it was still very much an unpleasant one
The Weinstein company had just bought the rights for Snowpiercer and Harvey was adamant on cutting out 25 minutes of Bong's dialogue
There was one part
He really wanted cut out the scene in which the train guard guts the fish in what seemed like a pretty sick battle ritual
One asked why he wanted to keep the part Bong replied. It's something personal. My father was a fisherman
I'm dedicating the shot to my father
Weinstein replied that family was the most important thing to him and
Thankfully, he kept the pardon Bong later remarked. It was a ******* lie. My father was not a fisherman
Parasite made history by becoming the first international movie to win the Palme d'Or and Best Picture at the Oscars
Talking to Vanity Fair Bong described how he took very strange inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock
for instance
The director put in a callback to psycho with that stair scene and voyeurism plays a huge part in the film as it did in
Rear-window and finally, there's a collection of Alfred Hitchcock films in the Park's house as an obvious easter egg
Going off the previous fact
Stairs were probably the most prevalent symbol in the film at the start of Parasite in the Kim's house
There are stairs leading down to their semi basement dwelling when the Sun gets the tutoring job the street leading up to the Park's house
Almost looks like a steep staircase itself
And when he arrives at the actual house
There are stairs everywhere each of them serving as a sort of divider
Between the family and people who do not belong like the father always says
But my favorite set of staircases only appear near the end of Parasite when the Kim's have just escaped the house and are
Desperately trying to get back to their home at first glance
The pouring rain and lifeless streets may seem like the biggest factors in making the scene powerful
However, in my opinion, the many staircases are a subtle but important detail that really tell the story of the scene
They serve as an excellent way to put imaginary distance between themselves and the Park's house
With every staircase they descend feeling like a different world entirely from where they just were
After re-watching this part
It almost seems as if the Kim's are descending into some version of hell with a dimly lit orange streetlights and the pandemonium
Caused by all the flooding the difference between that and the Park's house or heaven is very striking
When song is looking through the forged documents, he says Seoul National University
But the captions actually read Oxford
This is because Bong and the translator
Agreed that they needed to change the subtitles in order for the joke to be immediately understood by the Western audiences
Bong Joon-ho has directed many movies that you've probably already seen or should definitely consider watching
Snowpiercer was probably his most well-known film before Parasite and in a quick summary the violence setting story
Characters and overall strangeness that have really become part of his filmmaking style is what really makes Snowpiercer a classic
Oakjaw is another very good film by him still a very strange movie
But different from Parasite and Snowpiercer as it takes place over a very large setting
The host is Bong's venture into a monster horror movie, and I honestly don't remember much of it
But it's got a young-looking song with highlights in his hair fighting a toxic waste monster. How can you not love that?
The special effects team had to put in a lot of work to get the water pressure right for when Kim Ki-jung sits atop the
Toilet smoking a cigarette and luckily for her
It wasn't actual sewer water, but face mud mask was used to give the water its brownish color
The idea for Parasite came about when a stage actor friend of Bong's
Suggested he tried directing a play having really never done anything of the sort
he thought about where the story could possibly take place being that space is so limited in a play Bong then had the revelation of
creating a rich and a poor house and said that it all came about because he was finishing up Snowpiercer at the time a
Movie which also dealt with the rich and the poor although in a very different way
The filming took place over 77 days and only cost around 12 million dollars
Not that bad when you consider it made over 14 times its budget and is now the most famous Korean movie of all time
A spin-off television series is coming
It will also be called Parasite
But unlike most sequels or prequels Bong Joon-ho has said that this will be more of an expansion to the film universe
For instance when the original maid comes back at night and is pouring rain
Her face was all bruised up and she's never able to divulge what happened that night before she meets her demise
Stories like this and also the maids relationship with the original architect Nam Goong will be touched upon
Bong Joon-ho and Song Kang-ho have such a close bond
The director said that if he had not liked the project there probably would not have been a parasite
The crazy idea of using a peach of all things as a secret weapon came to Bong when he was just in college
He had a friend who was severely allergic to peaches and so one day on a school trip
Another friend threw a peach at that guy and he instantly turned bright red and had a very bad allergic reaction
Most people probably would have freaked out or ran for help, but not Bong instead
He had a pretty awesome realization
Peaches were very fun and pretty to look at but they could also be used to attack and disable someone with allergies
So in his mind both of these things made peaches very cinematic
If you watched the Oscars, you were probably wondering who's that grandma giving the speech for the Best Picture Award?
Well, her name is Mickey Lee and she is not only the executive producer and financial backer of the movie
But also the granddaughter of the founder of Samsung
Lee and her brother owned the CJ group which deals in movies managing kpop stars and believe it or not
Invested four hundred million dollars in DreamWorks over 25 years ago
The irony in all this is that even Parasite the movie which has so many relevant themes and pertinent messages for our time
Was made within the very same broken system that it showed us
Lee Jong-un the maid who had an allergy to peaches also voiced Okja in the movie Okja
If you're anything like me
Not getting an answer on the purpose of that rock was a little frustrating and while there's still nothing concrete about the scholar stone
Bong did say that he and his father used to go out looking for them in rivers when he was a kid
Interest in finding scholar stones with the younger generations has been waning in recent years
But he put it in there anyways and posed a confusing question if a character says an object is metaphorical. Is it still metaphorical?
Bong Joon-ho
spoke of filming in an ultra-rich Korean house and how his hand was literally shaking from returning a trash can that he was using as
A prop he explained it stayed silent even when closing the lid and cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,500
For people of different circumstances to live together in the same space is not easy
It is increasingly the case in this sad world that humane relationships based on coexistence or symbiosis
Cannot hold and one group is pushed into a parasitic relationship with another in the midst of such a world
Who can point their finger at a struggling family locked in a fight for survival and call them parasites?
It's not that they were parasites from the start
They are our neighbors
Friends and colleagues who have merely been pushed to the edge of a precipice as a
depiction of ordinary people who fall into an unavoidable commotion
This film is a comedy without clowns a tragedy without villains all
Leading to a violent tangle and a headlong plunge down the stairs
You are all invited to this unstoppably furious tragicomedy. Thanks for watching everyone
I had a ton of fun making this video and I really hope you all liked it
I already got another one. I'm working on so I'll see you all very soon till next time
