Tokyo Side Trip to Yokohama japan-guide.com
Centred around the Tokyo Bay Area and Kanagawa Prefecture lies Japan's second largest city,
Yokohama. Just 30 minutes on the train from Tokyo lands you in this hugely varied metropolis,
where traditional houses and strolling paths meet majestic city views and the largest Chinatown in
Japan. My name is Matt Evans, staff writer for japan-guide.com, and today I'll be reporting
on some of the best attractions you can find on a one-day trip to Yokohama. Here's the plan.
We'll start our journey in the early morning from Yokohama Station, taking the Negishi line
to Negishi Station. From here we'll take a local bus and a short walk to our first stop of the day
at Sankeien Garden. We'll then jump on a city bus to the Chinatown area for some tasty street food
and from there make our way to the urban centre of Minato Mirai for a beautiful view of the Tokyo
Bay Area. So join us as we explore Japan's second largest city and all it has to offer.
After a short journey from Yokohama to Negishi Station we continue for a few stops on the local
bus. Getting off we walk the last 10 minutes to Sankeien. After paying our entrance fee we
head inside for a stroll through this beautiful landscape garden. This is Sankeien, made in 1906
by a wealthy silk trader called Hara Tomitaro. Around me you can see a whole series of beautiful
traditional buildings, pagodas, tea rooms, temple buildings. Now what's interesting about these is
that almost all of them are older than the park itself. Hara bought these from temples and villas
all around the country and brought them here piece by piece, putting them back together again
sometimes with small changes made by Hara himself. Let's go check it out.
From Sankeien a 35 minute bus ride brings us to the entrance of Yokohama's famous Chinatown
or Chukagai in Japanese. The Chinese community here began with the opening of Yokohama Port in 1859
when traders from China were allowed to settle as long as they remained in this area. Today it's a
famous sightseeing and dining spot for tourists and the town boasts a vast variation of both street food
and different types of Chinese cuisines. So I'm here in Chinatown in Yokohama and it's lunchtime.
Okay these are shrimp shumai, looks really really good. It's really hot.
After a quick visit to the unique Kante-byo temple we head towards the new city centre of
Much of the walk follows an attractive pedestrian promenade along the waterfront.
Along the promenade we make a brief stop at the Cup Noodle Museum.
Here you can learn more about the history of the famous cup noodle brand and even create your own.
Okay so for our last stop of the day we're here at the Landmark Tower which is the second
tallest skyscraper in Japan. So let's head on up to the top and check out the view.
The view from up here is amazing. From up here on this observation deck we can see a beautiful
panorama of the bay, we can see local landmarks like the Yokohama Stadium, over that way is
Kamakura and look we can even see Mount Fuji. And with our visit to the Landmark Tower coming
to an end so does our one day trip in Yokohama. Thank you for watching. I hope that this video
