Wander with us to Cumberland Island National Seashore.
Hey guys this is Robin and Miko and we're Wander Open Roads.
So it's pretty early in the morning and we are getting ready to take our ferry boat ride over
to Cumberland Island. But for now we're just enjoying some of the beautiful scenery from
Cumberland Island National Seashore is located on the Atlantic coast in southeast Georgia and is the
largest of Georgia's Golden Isles. The seashore features beaches and dunes, marshes, freshwater
lakes, and wild horses that live on the island. Tent camping is allowed on the island but remember
you can only transport what you can carry so pack accordingly. Cumberland Island is only
accessible by boat and we visited the from the visitor center in St. Mary's Georgia.
So this was a trip that I've really been looking forward to for a long time to go and
see the wild horses at Cumberland Island and it definitely did not disappoint. Yes um it was
definitely something I was looking forward to as well just because I've heard so much about it
and obviously I just really wanted to see it for myself. Yeah definitely. Now one thing that I'll
definitely say is that you need to make sure that you bring food. You need to bring enough
water. I mean there there isn't anywhere to buy food on the on the island so you are totally out
there on your own. You need to make sure that you have your own supplies. I would recommend bringing
a first aid kit you know in case you you know fall and scrape your knee or whatever. So yeah
definitely come prepared. Yeah I mean this is a remote destination. I mean there's not going to
be any amenities in the area so you really have to make sure that you pack carefully to bring
everything that you think that you might need. Yeah but it is definitely worth it because there
are just some of the most picturesque and beautiful sites that you will ever see and
the nice thing about it is there are not a ton of people. Now I will say I was kind of expecting
as we were walking along the beach to actually see horses on the beach. That did not happen
but it did not you know spoil the trip. But we we did see some horses later which you will see in
the video and that was definitely cool. I just love that Spanish moss. It is so beautiful walking
through these areas. One of the really cool things we were able to visit on Cumberland Island were
the Dungeness ruins. Dungeness is the name originally given to a mansion that was built by
the widow of American Revolution hero General Nathaniel Green. The first Dungeness mansion
burned down in 1866 and the land was sold to Thomas and Lucy Carnegie. Thomas Carnegie was
the brother of Andrew Carnegie the steel magnate from Pittsburgh. They built a fantastic mansion
on this site that was completed in 1885 and this mansion continued to expand through construction
until 1905 until it reached 37,000 square feet with more than 50 rooms. Over the years the
Carnegie family moved on to different directions and this mansion started to go into disrepair
until it was finally burned down in 1959 by a disgruntled poacher who was caught
on the land shooting deer. We really enjoyed our day trip to Cumberland Island. I kind of wish we
would have had more time but it is what it is. Yeah who knows maybe next time we'll tent camp
out there. I'm an RVer so probably not. Yeah probably not but I do look forward to
visiting again in the future. Definitely we'll see you next time. All right bye. Be sure to check out
