Alright guys, recording on my iPhone. I want to give you an analogy. You might like this and you
may want to put this to your clients. Let's imagine you have someone phone up and they're
sort of debating whether or not to have a DJ or just get the guests to write down their
favourite track, send it to them and then they'll just like get an iPod. Now of course if they get
a DJ they're going to get hopefully a good selection of music placed in the right order.
If they get an iPod they're hopefully going to get a good selection of music
not placed in the right order. So how can you get that information into a good analogy that
you can give to your client to make them understand that booking you as a professional
DJ is the best way forward? I'll explain. Let's imagine you go to an amazing restaurant, I mean
the top restaurant in the world and you're placed in front of you. First a good T-bone steak or maybe
beef, sorry, mushroom stroganoff if you're vegetarian. I don't know. And then after that
you're given some ice cream, homemade, and then after that you're given some fish and then after
that you're given some lettuce and tomatoes and then after that you're given some, I don't know,
maybe another steak and then after that you're given an apple pie and then after that you're
given something else. So what am I getting at here? Well you're not being given the food in
the correct order you're just being given food randomly. Now as we all know if you go into a
restaurant generally you have a starter main course and suite but imagine having the suite first
then the starter and then the main course. I mean you'd think the chef was barmy but if you put
that analogy to your client and explain to them that when their guests throw music at them and
all that music is just put into an iPod and then these tracks are played randomly you're not going
to get a good selection played in the correct format. You're going to get maybe a hip-hop song
then an R&B song then a house song then a funk song then a reggae song then a disco track then
a pop song. It's going to be all over the place unless someone spends a great deal of time
setting them out correctly but then would they want to do that? No, well that's where we come in,
that's our job, that is why we're paid to do a good job, to set the music in the correct order
so we are the chefs of the music. We make sure that the client in the restaurant,
the client at the venue get a good selection of music
set out correctly so you start the evening off how it should start off, mellow and chilled out.
You slowly build the evening up and you maybe stick to one genre for a while then go to another
one. You don't play one from one genre then another one and so on and so on. This is what we're good at
so listen to those words, take them in and then if you ever do have a conversation with a client
who's debating on using an iPod then explain to them that that is not a good idea. Give them
the chef analogy and hopefully it will make them book you. Practice and enjoy. Thank you.
