Allen Iverson, Shaq & Yao Ming funny interview (2016) Basketball Hall of Fame
I would like to be known as the Big Aristotle.
Shatford, the Big Shamrock, the Big Cactus, the Diesel.
That's why I'm Will Chambonese.
The most valuable player in NBA history.
Not now.
NBA's future.
All those skills are bundled into that 7.5 package.
Guys, I want to talk about first impressions.
Yao, what was your first impression of Shaquille O'Neal?
Wow, that's almost like a rhino-o-meter on a play against...
You know, a couple of years ago I went to Africa to see a real rhino.
That's not much of a difference.
My first impression of Yao was, who the f*** is this?
Because he came in and I tried to hit him with a smooth finger on the block.
Next play down, I tried to hit him with a fadeaway block.
Next time I tried to come up, dunk, block.
First guy to block my shot three times in a row.
So he's definitely the first guy I had to change how I played against him.
And he's also the first guy to get it, turn around, look me right in the face,
and just shoot right over me.
So that's what I thought of when I first thought of Yao.
I want to ask about your first impression of Shaq on the court.
Scary.
This is the dude, though.
Even though you've got that mentality,
this is that one that you really admire and respect
as dominant on both ends of the court.
I used to brag to my friends a lot and say,
after we played the Lakers, I'd get to the crib and be like,
yo, you've seen how I laid Shaq, you know what I mean?
You've seen Shaq try to get that and I put that thing
and hop off the glass on him, you know what I mean?
And that gave me added confidence to myself
to where I felt like if I could score over Shaq,
I could score over anybody, you know what I mean?
Because I wanted to be Lil' Shaq on the basketball court.
Today's game, let me ask you guys about today's game
because it's gone smaller, right?
A.I., how do you think you would do in today's game?
Forty.
Same.
Or worse.
Or worse?
Forty.
You're saying forty?
Forty, easily.
Forty.
Who's going to guard them?
That's my question.
It'll be a lot of people on Shaq and the Fool, I'll tell you that.
Yeah, but if you look at it,
who now would be able to guard Shaq and y'all?
Nobody.
You know what I mean?
But the game is still elevating.
It's still great.
It's still soft.
What's your biggest concern with the game right now, Shaq?
Well, I like the game.
We still got LeBron, Steph Curry, Russ,
but those guys bring a lot.
But as far as from a big man standpoint,
we're not used to seeing big guys shoot threes for four quarters.
Maybe once a quarter, but now that's all sitting is going to do,
is just pick and pop.
Like I never heard strict four, strict five until my 18th year in the league.
Like I'm used to seeing guys post up, demand the ball, spin lob,
stuff like that.
But now it's just the guard and the forward player is still fabulous.
LeBron and Steph, they're holding down.
But as a big guy, watch other big guys.
It's soft.
All right.
I got a question now for all of you guys.
Yeah, we'll start with you.
What was your most embarrassing moment on the court?
Oh, when Stephen Marbury crossed the mark and he fell.
I think that is.
When you say that, that's your picture.
It's the only picture I cross through.
My most embarrassing moment.
We like to play it all, but one time I'm at the free throw line
and I shoot an air ball.
But instead of being embarrassed, I was like, damn, the ball slipped out.
I was like, give me a towel, dawg.
But, yeah, I shot a few air balls from the free throw line.
I think I was guarding.
My move is what, 6-1?
That ain't it.
All right, well, you tell me what you think it was.
Practice.
We talking about practice.
That had nothing to do with no game, man.
And that's what people didn't know, actually.
Yeah, but I thought you were saying in a game.
In a game?
I am.
I like how you just said that, in a game.
I was having flashbacks.
We talking about a game?
I still get teased about it this many years later.
But we talking about practice, man.
What are we talking about?
Practice?
We talking about practice, man.
We talking about practice.
We ain't talking about the game.
