Since the first skyscraper towered over the skyline in Chicago,
the United States has had a never-ending list of construction projects that will
make the title of the tallest building in the USA a temporary one.
Chicago's Willis Tower and the Empire State Building have long been overshadowed by the
likes of One World Trade Center, but soon that too may no longer hold the title with
several projects underway. Check out this list of 10 future skyscrapers in the USA.
Number 10. Hudson's Site, Detroit. 727 feet, 222 meters.
Coming up in the site of the demolished old J.L. Hudson Store in downtown Detroit
is a skyscraper that was all set to be the tallest building in the city at 912 feet until in 2020,
the plans were changed to decrease the height to just a bit lower than the Renaissance Center,
which is 727 feet. Called Hudson's Site, the tower is being built to commemorate
the legacy of the original 25-story Hudson Store in 1891, which became the tallest department
store in the world. Hudson's Site is being built at a cost of $909 million and will offer 185,000
square feet of space for both retail and residential purposes and is expected to be
completed by 2023. The tower is being designed by Shop Architects of New York and will provide
spectacular city views at every level. The structure is a unique one that features a
skyscraper rising up between two terraces stacked on either side,
making it look like a giant chimney instead. The tower will house exhibition centers,
offices, convention halls, and almost 250 apartments.
Number 9. One River Point Towers 1 and 2, Miami. 817 feet, 249 meters.
One River Point Towers 1 and 2 is all set to be architect Rafael Vinoly's contribution to
the expanding luxurious landscape of Miami. The two towers are a beautiful combination
of soaring twin structures joined by a stunning glass skybridge 800 feet above the Miami River.
The two towers being built on a downtown site will have 65 floors and will be 817 feet high.
While that doesn't come anywhere near some of the tallest buildings in the USA, it certainly is one
of the most spectacular ones when you see what the designer has planned to integrate into the design.
The River Point Towers 1 and 2 are a standout architectural statement that will include a
In addition, it will feature several amenities for residents such as offices, an exclusive club,
retail outlets, a hotel, spas, and a multi-story car park.
The towers together will house 350 luxury condominiums with private terraces,
with each condo priced at a hefty sum of $16 million.
The Sky Club on the 56th floor will offer residents a 360-degree panoramic view of the city
and will also have an exercise studio, fine dining, and Sky Villa penthouses
on each of the top floors.
Austin will boast one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in the city when completed.
The 6X Guadalupe is a beautiful residential tower that offers some stunning views of Austin.
Located between 6X Street and Guadalupe, 6X will be 837 feet tall
and the tallest skyscraper in Austin, Texas, that offers a unique urban experience.
The proposed 66-story building is being designed to feature two stacked towers
with over 589,000 square feet of office and residential space for 345 units.
The super-tall building is influenced by the Texas Capitol's View Corridor
and is located in the heart of Austin's business, culture, and nightlife areas.
The building will house business centers, private terraces, high-speed elevators,
on-site fitness gyms, and open floor plates wrapped in 11-foot floor-to-ceiling vision glass.
6X will provide people with fantastic views of the surrounding lakes and hills,
including the city.
The building is expected to be completed in 2022.
All set to become the fourth-largest office tower in New York City is 50 Hudson Yards,
a 58-story building being constructed at a height of 1,011 feet.
Part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project in Hudson Yards, Manhattan, New York City,
the tower is expected to provide almost 2.9 million square feet of commercial space,
of which 1.2 million square feet will be owned by none other than current tenants, Facebook.
50 Hudson Yards is being constructed at a whopping cost of almost $3.5 billion
and was financed by several financial corporations such as Mitsui Furoshan,
Bank of China, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Wells Fargo.
The building, started in 2018, is expected to be completed in 2022 and will feature two
unnamed starburst-shaped sculptures by famous American artist Frank Stella,
which will be placed in the lobby.
By the year 2025, Manhattan in New York will feature most of the tallest skyscrapers in
the United States. Coming up on 34th Street between Hudson Boulevard and 10th Avenue is
another super-tall skyscraper, The Spiral, that will outdo 50 Hudson Yards in height by 30 feet.
Also known as 66 Hudson Boulevard, it will tower over the city skyline at 1,041 feet.
The 66-floor building was designed by the Bjark-Ingels Group and will have the prominent
feature of an outdoor garden on each floor that will spiral around the building.
Conceived originally as the Hudson Spire, it was changed to The Spiral,
most probably in keeping with its main theme of a spiral garden. What's unfortunate is the
reduction of the height that was originally planned for, 1,800 feet, that would have made it the tallest
building in the United States and in the Western Hemisphere. The building has incurred over $438
million spent on the surrounding area alone, where two men owning an apartment on 10th Avenue
and 34th Street were paid off $25 million to move. Now that's a lucky stroke if there ever was one.
The Spiral is expected to be completed by 2021.
Soaring high above the windy city skyline in the top three of the tallest buildings in Chicago
is the Vista Towers, now named St. Regis Chicago. The 93-story giant is 1,198 feet high,
and though completed, is not yet open. The tower will be operational in the first quarter of 2021.
Incidentally, St. Regis, designed by architect Gene Gang, is the world's tallest structure to
be designed by a woman. Developed by the Magellan Development Group, St. Regis was
constructed at a cost of $1 billion and consists of three interconnected towers with different
heights, featuring a step-like arrangement and a curvilinear design of alternating pyramid-like
shapes called frustums. The most prominent feature of the St. Regis Tower is its unique
wave-like facade that will make it an iconic part of the Chicago skyline. Gang has designed
the tower to complement the nearby Aqua Tower, also designed by her. St. Regis will house 393
condominium residences and 33 suites, while 191 rooms will be operated by the St. Regis Hotel.
4. TRANSMIT TERMINAL TOWER, PHILADELPHIA, 1,200 FEET, 365 METERS
2901 Arch Street, also called the Transit Terminal Tower, is a 1,200-foot skyscraper
in Philadelphia that is part of the 30th Station District, which will feature eight
skyscrapers ranging from as small as 405 feet to 1,200 feet and being built at a cost of $11
billion. The Transit Terminal Tower will be the tallest building on the project with 85 floors.
The construction of the project, designed in the modern architectural style by architects
Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, is expected to commence in 2025 and be completed in 2028.
As part of the 30th Station District project, the Transit Terminal Tower, along with the other
buildings, will be providing over 18 million square feet of space, reserved mainly for office space.
Once completed, the project is expected to give a huge upgrade to the 30th Street Station area,
which is the second busiest station in the Amtrak rail system.
3. STEINWAY TOWER, 111 W 57TH STREET, MANHATTAN, 1,428 FEET, 435 METERS
111 W 57th Street, also known as the Steinway Tower of the Piano Maker fame, is another super
tall residential skyscraper being built on Billionaire's Row in Midtown Manhattan.
Designed by Warren and Wetmore, the building will rise to a height of 1,428 feet with 84 stories.
The structure consists of two sections, one being a smaller 16-story former Steinway & Sons store
at the tower's base, with the taller building being constructed as a new project expected to
be completed by 2021. The tower, being built at a cost of $2 billion, will soon become one of the
tallest buildings in the USA. It will also hold the title of the thinnest skyscraper in the world,
making it a prominent city landmark. It will house 60 luxury condominiums and will be packed
with amenities like an indoor swimming pool, saunas, fine dining restaurants, and a fitness
center. However, its most prominent feature is its domed lobby, containing gold and silver
leaf murals with elephant motifs related to materials that are used in pianos.
2. THE TRIBUNE EAST TOWER, CHICAGO, 1,422 FEET, 433 METERS
The Tribune East Tower is all set to share the skyline of Chicago with Willis Tower,
although it may not be quite as high at 1,422 feet. The 113-story super skyscraper is being
built on the eastern edge of the Tribune Tower property in Streeterville, and is expected to
be completed in 2025, with construction starting in either 2021 or 2022. The tower was designed
by skyscraper architect Adrian Smith, who also designed the Burj Khalifa and Trump Tower,
but they have not yet disclosed the cost of proposed construction, although that is obviously
going to run into a couple of billion dollars. The tower was originally planned as a 1,388-foot
building, 36 stories taller than the present Tribune Tower. The plans for a 1,422-foot
structure were later unveiled in 2018, and it's expected to include a 200-unit hotel,
439 apartments, and 125 condominiums. Once completed, it will be taller than
the Trump International Hotel and Tower, which is 1,388 feet.
Number 1. Central Park Tower, New York City, 1,550 feet, 472 meters
Topping the top 10 list of tallest buildings in the USA is the Central Park Tower in New York City
that was supposed to be completed by the end of 2020. When completed, it will be the most
prized addition to Billionaire's Row on 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
Also known as the Nordstrom Tower, it is a residential super skyscraper towering high
at 1,550 feet and 131 floors. Designed by skyscraper experts Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill,
the tower is being built at a cost of $3 billion. Consisting of 179 condominiums that are expected
to be sold at $60 million or more, Central Park Tower will be the second tallest building in the
United States. The tower has a huge Nordstrom store on the ground floor, the first in the USA.
It will also feature a cantilever above the Art Students League of New York's building
at 215 West 57th Street that will offer spectators some incredible views of Central
Park and the Manhattan skyline. If you happen to be near any of these projects,
don't you think it would be cool to walk up to the observation decks on any of these
super high buildings once they are completed? There's an awesome video at the end of this one
