Andy Lewis (@sketchyandylewis) is getting more responsible but sometimes he still does sketchy things. Sylvan Christensen (@sylvanslacks) droned over a 1/8" or 3mm Technora 12 cord that Andy got from his super bowl project attached to a taped open carabiner and hooked the chain on the Witch tower in Moab Utah... THEN ANDY SCOOTED ACROSS IT!!! The next day he BASER jumped out of a plane and landed on the tower next to it, "The Warlock" with Joshua G. (@joshua_wild_skies). Of course I break test the tech cord when I got home and discovered it was at it's limits with the overhand knots he tied in it! with Logan O'Brien and Madeleine Mckenzie https://www.basejumpmoab.com/ and https://www.skydivemoab.com/
Would you like to know the two sketchiest ways to tag a highline?
Check it out on this episode of How Not to Highline.
Hi I'm Ryan Jinks and I am in Moab, Utah standing on the which and that is the warlock.
That is Logan O'Brien right there and a space net right there and Maddie McKenzie right there.
This is pretty cool tower to tower line but this was rigged uh basically it was tagged
getting the line across the initial uh small paracord basically super sketchy for both lines
and we're going to cover that in this video on the two sketchiest ways you can rig a highline.
So Andy and Sylvan rigged this uh about two days ago and from that side instead of climbing the
They decided to try to drone a open taped open carabiner and attach it to these chains.
It was a steel carabiner and so that was 15 kilonewton strong
open unlike uh normal carabiners that are aluminum are only about seven.
They used 3 16th technora cord attached to it they tried to use two at uh they tried to use
two technora cords at the same time for either redundancy or a u-shape but it wasn't working so
they had to use one and then Andy scooted across this line just on the technora cord.
Welcome. Thank you. Good walk. Thank you. And basically scooted across 3 16 technora cord
while being belayed by Sylvan over there which would have done as you can see absolutely nothing
and uh then when he got over here they rigged the highline so that was
probably one of the sketchiest tags ever done and then over here Andy and Joshua
landed on this from uh little sitlup lane or whatever they're called up there and and then
we uh droned a tagline to them and then Sylvan and Andy rigged this highline but yes that's two
alternative ways to tag your highlines it's pretty pretty gnarly so now I'm gonna walk this
and hopefully I do all right. How'd you come up with the idea to use to fly this over and just
slide across it? So this originally actually came up I got a shout out of legend Brayden Mayfield.
Brayden Mayfield's one of the older slackline legends of the world who actually just visited
Mallorca he's opening stuff up in Saudi Arabia but he got me this cord from the Superbowl where
I met him and this is actually the cord that flies the Superbowl cameras. So this is uh rigged
into a tri-loop system right so rigged from like there to there to here to there and then the
camera can be pulled in all directions and they fly they fly the camera for the Superbowl with
this it's called Tech 12 and it's Technora 12. It's kind of like Dyneema um it just has a bit
of a higher burning temperature or lower burning temperature it's one of those I think it's a
I actually don't know why it's one of those um anyway this is light it's kind of like Amstel
it has the 12 braid kind of like cinchy thing so you can actually splice it and whatnot we did not
yeah I was gonna say you didn't splice it show us the knot I just did one of these
and I tied that to an anchor and then we tightened it a bit from the edge to the tower
50 meters so it's like it's just about 165 feet exactly that tower even though we just rigged
that one you can see it's not a death ball for part of it and then it's not and then it's like
probably break your legs and then it's definitely death ball slowly scoot across that whole thing
on just this piece of line that we tied to a drone and so this was tied to the drone
the drone was hanging in the line with a carabiner and the carabiner hit the tower
and then sylvan was flying the drone and I kind of just snagged it okay and you verified it with
the drone camera that it was in camera yeah we so so the camera we gave it enough distance so that
we could fly the camera up and actually inspect visually how it was clipped in so how do you
unconnect it from the drone you don't you land the drone so now your drone's trapped over there
it's embedded in the system embedded in the system so your drone is now embedded over there so the
original idea was actually to lower the line and then use the line as an emergency if we needed to
tag it up the tower but we didn't have enough time to climb the tower we got here too late
so I just did an overhand like that all right we'll put that on the brake test at home yeah find out
how sketchy you really are I don't think I think I was within a three to one safety ratio and I
will go what did it feel like having that uh riding through your ass cheeks well honestly
it wasn't that bad until I got about 40 feet out and it was all like scuffed and frayed like it
had been pulled over an extra something what about abrasion protection oh no that was fine it was just
I didn't inspect the line as well as I should have before we droned over there what'd you do
to protect it from oh I heard it that was awesome we just crashed the drone yeah I heard it hit
something did it hit the line hit the tower oh oh no that's okay well we just lost the drone
but um anyway we almost crashed it in that exact place tying this to the drone oh my god okay okay
it was totally in functioning condition so what did you do to protect it from edge
abrasion so what we did is uh actually when it was hanging there I taped a section about eight
feet with climbing tape so it was climbing taped from that so the steel carabiner was taped open
holding the chains which was into a bolt and a piton so oh my god and then we just scooted
that on and then you z-dragged it on this side z-dragged it on this side just to like not too
tight we didn't want to like test its limits but I didn't want it to break while I was on it
so I tightened really and then bounced it yeah I didn't want to be like and then you bounced it
I didn't want to be like 80 feet out and have it be like so he belayed you he belayed me
quote unquote so yeah he let a rope out so he could retrieve your body a lot easier than if it
went all the way down to the bottom it would have broken I would have broken my legs and then I
would have been yelling let the rope go why did we ever think tying it was a good idea just let me
die and then he would be like why don't you untie yourself and I'd be like because my hands are also
broken no I think it landed safe I think we're good I mean it's definitely down there it's down
there we have to get it did you get the shot in the queue I got the shot oh see you got the shot
oh that's fine uh so all right so tell us about how you got landed on this tower the on this tower
we have a tso baser systems which is basically for uh layman's terms we have parachutes that
are legal to jump out of planes that are base rigs as well so we can land on towers from the
plane and then repack the base rig as if we're jumping off of a tower okay so parachutes from
the sky are usually different than parachutes from the earth because parachutes from the sky
have to open up slower but these ones are special parachutes that could be used for both if that's
too much then look into it but that's as much I've actually made a lot of sense yeah
so how did it feel landing did you feel like you had it solid oh it was very great I mean
the wind was in the perfect direction for the tower the tower was much bigger than we expected
it was actually probably 100 feet long maybe 30 feet wide which is like the parachuting standards
that's like gigantic okay that's it's actually like a I would repeat it actually that's actually
like a fun one I could write that one in the books but um yeah so those were the two most
unique ways I've ever seen high lines tagged yeah and they were both rigged in like under two hours
so do you have ideas on actually how to make this safer can you make a u-shape and then pull a
thicker cord through I think that the best idea would be to have a drone powerful enough to carry
a high line and then you drone a high line over it clip it to an already done anchor and then we
set a world record for longest drone access on drone access on site free solo first to first
descent tower all right find a tower where there's never been a high line and then clip it with a
drone and walk it one direction without ever going to that tower this uh that's what I'm saying
make sure you subscribe so you can see that video when it happens
this video is sponsored by base jump moab baby you can do a tandem and you can jump off uh yeah
if you do a tandem out of the plane at skydive moab you get 30 off your base jump in base jump
moab so you can go do a tandem out of the sky see if you want to do the base jump and if you do
and you can get your courage up and we can drive out here base jump off the cliffs the wonderful
cliffs out here which the exit is actually 20 minutes that way we're really close you just walk
20 minutes there and you can go to base jump how cool is that yeah and remember your stash bag
that's what i'm talking about so we i showed him my this is my jacket stash method when you forget
your stash bag you put your parachute in your jacket and then you close your parachute container
with a pull-up cord or some brake cord to carry your your parachute like a backpack without a
backpack to carry your parachute what like when you're at the drop zone and you're not really
thinking about hiking because you think about skydiving and all of a sudden you land on the
top of a desert tower and you're like oh shit even though you've done this like 10 times and
you should have absolutely how was it for you landing on the tower i was it was awesome i
opened up i was actually really apprehensive about it uh because you didn't have a pilot
chute that was the right size so you just tied it in a knot tied it in a knot to make a smaller
pilot chute okay it's skydiving what could go wrong and uh so anyways i think that's great
uh and i look at the tower and andy's like talking about this little tiny tower but it's
pretty it's pretty decent so i was like sweet i got this and then uh land on the tower cool
yeah came in nice and clean yeah it was it was awesome the wind was directly down the lengthwise
from the uh so you got you got your left able to uh land into the wind with as much more weight
awesome well this is uh pretty fun magic holy pretty bad yeah i can't believe it like i uh a
drop zone and then in the sky and then on the top of towers and then face jumping again and
then climbing out of the gorge and then here with you guys so yeah yeah
there it is
the last time we were hanging out we were uh skydiving i was skydiving with andy at the
drop zone and welcome to skydive moab i'm here with ryan jenks you have to leave that hat here
getting on this plane together oh yeah and then we're going to jump out from 13 000 feet
backwards
oh welcome to hell not the high line baby join us in this next episode
we did it baby welcome to moab ryan did you like that or what oh that's i didn't see why people do
that again yeah that's what's up what up from skydive moab we will see you later i can't believe
what we fit into a single day here in moab right yeah i i can't believe it okay so the next part
is we're gonna go to the garage right now and brake test that cord okay before we go to the
machine we're going to recreate this here at the park i just got off work i paint houses for a
living and uh but i wanted to test how much force was put on the line uh when he slid across now
this is not the same length because i only have so much of this stuff but uh i put a figure eight
technora does not like knots but i put a figure eight in that to a closed carabiner because i
really want to test that and uh over here we did a basically a trucker's hitch a z-drag so
just put a knot in the middle of the rope it's not a butterfly knot it's just a figure eight like
you know like he did and then i just went back and forth and then we have a dino on it in order to see
what uh well of course we're gonna get let's find out peek fast on this is the line scale
two from linegrip.com my putty knife and pocket tools are out of my pocket
oh that hurts so bad oh my god okay
oh that's awful okay 2.37 let's find out what this stuff breaks at
okay so we are now in my garage officially and i've changed hats and now i'm in slack snap mode
this is our slack snap machine it's a 20-foot rectangle with a lot of pulleys and a costco
winch and we are going to test this i configured it just like i did in the park just like he did
when he went over the line you can see here we have just the same trucker's hitch and the same
so uh let's find out what this breaks at if you want to support this channel
juno coffee is our instant coffee business i just started with my friends don't make money
on youtube you need millions of subscribers for that so if you want to help us out and
drink some coffee go to brewjuno.com let's get breaking uh holy shit uh that was not a good idea
3.6 uh let's do that one more time wow this stuff is supposed to be much stronger um i think this
is five millimeter if i'm wrong then that's probably an issue but right now five millimeter
technora cord is supposed to be 22 kilonewton strong and am steel is 4800 pounds so it's it's
both about 22 kilonewton strong the technora cord this has a much higher melting point it is
932 fahrenheit or 500 degrees celsius whereas am steel this stuff melts at 290 degrees fahrenheit
or 143 degrees celsius so it's like three times lower uh but this this floats in water and this
does not this also stretches between four and five percent when it breaks and this is only
just above one percent when it breaks so those are the differences between these two high-tech fibers
that are both 12 strands and can be spliced but they're intended to be spliced and knots are very
very bad in these so we're going to actually splice um eye to eye and to see what is the
potential strength of this to compare it with what we got um sample 883 we only got four
kilonewtons so that's pretty consistently scary this is a figure eight and a figure eight end to
end 4.4 kilonewtons uh let's splice this and see what else we get so basically i was hoping this
was five millimeter just kind of lying to myself because it's three millimeter three millimeter
the breaking strength is 2500 pounds of force and we're basically getting a thousand pounds
of force when we put a knot in it because any of these high-tech low stretch cords basically
lose a lot of strength when you put knots in them and they're supposed to be spliced so let's splice
this with this d splicer that mel loaned me and i'm going to splice it the length of this d splicer
and we'll see if we can get um closer to 2500 pounds of force because this is a used cable
i believe annie got this when he did the super bowl um project in 2012 so it's eight years old
so yeah that has a factor in it i guess i spliced it on both ends and we're gonna see if we get
up to 10 kilonewtons i did not taper the berry which if i cut a couple strands up the thing it
would gradually grow and so it typically would break where the end would be tapered
this has some force on it 8.6 kilonewtons or almost 2000 pounds um that's basically
double so like if you really actually wanted to be do this which is gnarly you would splice this
end and then you would splice this and then connect it to a tension system and just put
barely a little bit of tension but not a trucker's hitch so this is going in the museum
of slack life this basically if you splice it you could get up to up to 10 kilonewtons if you splice
it right and it's new and you're only technically putting two kilonewtons if you're not bouncing
too hard on it five to one safety ratio it is a interesting concept if you were to drone across
your tagline assuming there's already bolts on the other side wow it is it's a way to get the
line across so um leave in the comments below if you would try this how you think you could make
it safer if you think you can drone two lines across in a u-shape and then pull a bigger cord
through which probably would be safer um yeah let me know what you think in the comments below i read
them all i can't respond to all of them but i definitely read them all and it guides me on
what we do on our next tests and whether or not i should share sketchy shit like this
make sure you like follow and subscribe because we're posting stuff all the time cheers
i am on a 300 meter line right now in moab utah andy and his crew set up here
i've only got that far to go uh this is how we wake up in the morning here
now i've done so much on this trip set up a like a rigging stuff project and then
space net and tower to tower line and did a tandem and skydive with andy and
oh this has been uh it's been an awesome trip it's only been like five days we did so much
we're gonna base jump today but the winds were too high um but uh yeah always fun shooting
look how close we are to the ground it's it's so sketchy to be this close to ground on a 300 meter
anyways just having fun out here hey thanks for watching but please don't be an idiot and try to
go highlining or climbing or repeat the stunts you see on this channel without going with someone who
knows what they're doing these sports come at a very high risk but can be done safely and that's
what this channel is devoted to helping you understand what you're looking at when you do
get the chance to learn from somebody in person we have tons of resources they're all free and
they're all at hownottohighline.com we have the bolting bible which we just finished the 2.02
version 2020 version and it's 133 pages 426 photos 216 links that work it's super thorough
if you want to learn bolting and we also have highline university international which is all
free courses now and highlining 101 is done how to use a highline that's already rigged
and we are doing the anchors and rigging and rope jumping and space nets and more
simultaneously with a large group of people now that we've made this open source it's going to be
just like the bolting bible it's got lots of photos lots of links and literally everything
on the topic we also have a way to get you plugged into the slackline community we have a list of
facebook groups on slackademics.com that you can hit control f find your area and find the groups
that all coordinate when and where they're going slacklining so you can get connected with our
slack family another free book we have on hownottohighline.com is the book of slack there
is some slack religious stuff at the beginning because we think that's funny but the rest of
it is about flow state and about the history of slackline it's a thorough deep book it's awesome
go check that out and no i don't make money on youtube you need millions of subscribers
just to make a living at it i do this for a fun hobby and because i really want the information
that i wish i had when i started available for the next generation we believe that safe
information should not be withheld for only those who can afford it but it does cost thousands of
dollars a year to run this channel boltbusters cost me like ten thousand dollars slack snapping cheap
and the websites cost money and yada yada if you're watching all the episodes please become
a patreon on patreon.com and if you take the courses please donate twenty dollars if you've
gone all the way through and benefited from it and if you read the entire bolting bible
learn how to bolt and bolted something without having to go through a learning curve wasting
money please donate 20 bucks on paypal we literally only survive off of donations for
this channel i did recently start a specialty instant coffee business with my friend it's
great for camping it's great for van life it's great for everyday drinking it's really great
