Terence had a bizarre encounter when he worked as a park ranger in 2005 at the Tallgrass Prairie
in Kansas. He claims that he had an encounter with what he described as a shapeshifter.
But before we get into today's stories, be sure to go ahead and hit that subscribe button
because I tell stories of the mysterious and supernatural. Let's do it.
It was March 2005, a sunny day in the morning time when Terence was driving around checking
in with some camp spots. Almost immediately, Terence began to notice something big moving
off in a field directly near the road. As he turned to look, whatever it was had incredible
speed, was very large, and disappeared off into the brush. Thinking nothing of it at the time,
or at least trying to, he continued on his route to take care of whatever business he had to tend to.
While it was unusual, it did not set him off. However, as the day turned to afternoon,
he began to feel that he was being watched or that somebody was following him.
At one point or another, he even recalls a strange-looking man dressed in native attire
like he was from the 1800s, but looking lost. When he tried to speak to this man,
the man only stared at him blankly, muttering his own name, and then went about looking for something.
What Terence described was strange, and while the man's appearance was out of place and bizarre,
it wasn't exactly off-putting. The man was doing nothing wrong, so Terence saw no further reason
to press for information. Later on that evening is when Terence sees this man again, but visibly
walking off into the brush, and what he describes here is disturbing. He said he sees this strange
man again going off into the brush, and within a moment or two later, the largest coyote he's ever
seen comes out the other side and vanishes off into the tree line. Now, he's stunned and shocked
by what he just saw, and he goes to personally investigate, thinking that the man was still
behind the brush, but he was not. He was gone. He had no way to explain what he had just saw
before his own eyes. He also realized that as he watched this massive coyote taking off into the
woods from the back side, it was the same animal he had seen that very morning. While it was
extraordinary, it wasn't until years later he would learn about the Comanche and Wichita tales of
shapeshifting practitioners who could transform into any animal they desired. Terence isn't
exactly scared of what he saw, but looking back, he does believe that the man he encountered was
a shapeshifter of some kind. He understands that it might be a little too crazy to assume
things automatically, but since that day, he was very unnerved, and the man just mysteriously
vanished. He has since heard many tales of shapeshifters from the Comanche and the Wichita.
One of his friends is part Kickapoo, and told me the story that he relayed. His Kickapoo friend
believes that what he experienced was indeed a shapeshifter, but we have to ask why? Why was he
in the park that day? Did he have some religious duty he had to attend to? Terence noted that this
man looked lost, or looking for something or someone. When Terence had asked him if he needed
any help finding anything, the man had only responded by blankly staring at him and speaking
his name, then wandered off. What could that mean? And more importantly, do you guys believe that
Terence had a run-in with something in the realm of the supernatural, or are the events that
transpired this day merely a coincidence and trickery of the eyes? Let me know what you guys
think. Aaron, who's half Arapaho, has lived on the property that he resides on with his family
for several generations now, in northeastern Kansas. He has lived there his whole life,
and the surrounding area is all full of Arapaho landmarks. The way he describes the property
is that there are these small hills that overlook the property, one to the west, and the other one
towards the east that's a little larger. What's interesting is beyond the west hill, it's supposedly
said to be cursed by evil spirits or deities. For that reason, his grandfather and father and him
don't ever go to that area. It's just dense woods, but even as a child, Aaron was never allowed to
play over in those woods. Aaron can recall vividly when he was a child, he had gone out there to play
in those woods and accidentally went a little too far one day. Well, nothing ever happened to him
then. His father, who would find him, scolded him relentlessly. Aaron was exploring the woods and
somehow wandered into that territory up on the hill. His father had been chopping firewood nearby
and saw that he was in there and began screaming at him to get out. He and his grandfather had warned
him severely of the dangers lurking in that section of the woods, claiming that the entities,
they do not understand. Anyone in their territory, they will devour. Aaron claimed that for many
years, he never understood why his father and grandfather were always so terrified of this
particular section of forest until he had an experience of his very own. For many years, his
family had passed on stories and tales of all sorts, many of which would not relate to me because
of time constraints. But one was a creature believed to be what we call the Dogman,
a bipedal humanoid wolf creature. Now, his story begins when he was in his early 20s and felt brave
enough to venture off into the woods one day, the exact section that he had been warned not to go
into. Now, I'm not exactly sure where his father or grandfather were on this day to prevent him
from doing so, but he did not detail that. It sounds like he was more curiosity driven,
wanting to explore, ignoring the dangers and warnings of his family. As he ventured about
100 yards, immediately, he began to notice the woods around him going silent. And that's when
he noted feeling like he was being watched. However, he ignored his gut instincts and
considered that he, his father and his grandfather had just been paranoid. He admits in hindsight
that he was very stubborn and the decision was stupid. And not too long after, he would see
multiple pairs of eyeshine from the thick brush. But here's where it gets crazier. The eyeshine was
about eight feet off the ground and there were multiple sets watching him. This was right around
a larger clearing that kind of sloped down slightly and also appeared to be full of many
bones. Not human bones, of course, just a lot of animal bones. It had also had a bad stink,
like body odor, wet dog, urine, and rotting meat. And that odor was more potent the closer you got
to the ground. Aaron believed that he had found the bedding down spot or at least some sort of
outside den. If he had to estimate, the area was no bigger than 15 by 15 at most. But you could tell
by the grass that something of significant size had been bedding down here amidst all the bones
and stink. The eyeshine portion of the story would come while he was in the area. Starting to get
scared now, he began to perform a cleansing ritual of cedar and sage. So whatever was out here, if it
was an evil spirit, could not follow him or affect him. And as soon as he began doing this and quietly
praying, the woods around him erupted in a swarm of roars and growling. He could hear heavy tree
branches and limbs being torn and ripped all around him. Aaron pretty much realized that the dangers
his father and grandfather had warned him of were now very real. Aaron begins to escape and make his
way back to the property, but the entire time, he could hear these things thrashing about in the
woods around him. They never did reveal themselves, but he could hear they were massive, growling and
roaring the entire time. Clearly displeased with his presence in their territory, he believes that
this was stupidity on his part, and was the catalyst for what was to come. He said that after this, the activity
began to start. Within a few days, they had found a mutilated elk on the far side of the property.
It looked like it had been butchered and left there. No meat was even touched. He and his father
got the impression it was a warning kill. A kill meant to invoke fear in those who saw it. Aaron
reiterated that these beings he provoked are extremely intelligent and seem to possess
abilities far superior to ours. Just one of the many reasons his family has feared that section
of the forest. Also, they do not live on a reservation. The area in Kansas where they live
is their property, just to clarify. Within the following few days, livestock began to disappear
in large numbers. Chickens would just vanish overnight. Goats gone. They would find weird
scratchings on their house about seven feet off the ground. And the same lingering stink of wet
dog and urine would often accompany it. And you could smell it from random parts of the property
too. Knowing sooner or later that his grandfather and father would find out and make the connection
of what he did. That somebody had to draw these things in. And eventually, Aaron confessed after
feeling guilty, and was pretty much verbally berated, rightfully so for doing something so dumb.
They did their best to pray and continue to perform cleansing rituals over the property
and the house. However, it did very little. From what Aaron described is that these beings
were infuriated that their territory had been wandered through. This understanding seemed to
exist that they had their portion of land, and these things had theirs. And there was supposed
to be a mutual respect, but clearly Aaron had violated that. There was never meant to be any
cross-travel, supposedly. While there are many smaller stories here and there of strange things
happening, the worst was when his grandfather was attacked and his chest cut open. Aaron recalls
that the wounds reminded him of a large grizzly bear had attacked him. The wounds were not meant
to kill, but to maim and to give as a warning of punishment for what Aaron had supposedly done.
The grandfather had been stitched up and cleaned up, but I guess he was never the same. He passed
away about four or so years after that event. And after his grandfather had been attacked,
the activity finally seemed to cease for quite some time. But here or there,
they would hear and see activity in the woods. Aaron has since moved out and lives elsewhere
now. However, the memories of what he provoked in the woods all those years ago still stay with him
like a nightmare that will never be forgotten. This story is one coming out of a small town
in Kansas called Emporia. Now, my dad pastored a small church there in the 80s, so this story is
close to home. Emporia is a small town set in the flat Kansas plains with a population of about
20,000 people. And the town is only five miles across from east to west. It is the home of
Emporia State University and Emporia School of Nursing. During the summer break, when school
is out and the college kids go home, the population is much less. Being such a small community,
it has the impression that everybody knows each other. Because there's only one traffic light
downtown, my father used to joke that if there were five cars in front of you at the light,
it was a traffic jam. Emporia got national attention in 1987 because of a movie titled
Murder Ordained. It was about an Emporia pastor and his lover, the church secretary,
who murdered their spouses. Well, it seems that Emporia has other things going on as well.
This encounter is told by somebody who grew up in that small town. Recalling the story,
it happened during the summertime when this little boy was approximately five or six.
The neighborhoods of Emporia are organized in a square block format. Because the town is so flat
and there are no hills in the surrounding area, it is possible to see at least 10 blocks in any
direction simply by looking down the street. He describes his house as having a long driveway
that returned to the alley. Emporia has alleys that run the length of each street behind the
houses where people would place their garbage cans for the garbage truck to pick up the trash.
There was a small white picket fence right up against the alley enclosing a sandbox and a small
swing set in the backyard. As the story goes, it was about mid-afternoon on a sweltering summer day.
After eating his lunch, his mother had him go outside to play. And while her young son was out
playing in the sandbox, she went to lie in the coolest part of the house, the back bedroom. This
is where the window faced the sandbox so she could keep an eye on him for the time being.
While he was playing, someone silently snuck up on him from the alley and cast a shadow over him.
The boy was startled. Then the stranger spoke to him in a low, eerie voice that sounded like
he was from another world. A voice that the young boy was not familiar with and asked him,
what are you doing there? The boy looked up to see who it was. The stranger appeared to have
positioned himself in the ideal position with the sun directly behind and above them. It was
difficult to make out the details of said person. They were just a blur. The young boy tried to
improve his vision by squinting his eyes, but despite his efforts, he could not recognize
the stranger. The boy then noticed the light outside appear to be changing as if it were
taking on a silvery hue. It was like the light was being filtered and made darker while still
being bright during the middle of the day. The air began to feel cooler, like when a storm was
about to hit. While staring upward in the person's direction, the boy shifted his body from side to
side to shield the direct sunlight from falling on his eyes. However, the person would move their
body simultaneously and in the same direction, almost as if it was deliberately trying not to
be recognized. When the boy asked, who are you? The person said, I'm your new friend. Let me come
in and play with you. The boy then remembered what his mother had told him about talking to
strangers and said, I can't. My mother told me not to talk to strangers. The person then said,
I'm not a stranger. I'm your friend. And the boy simply said, but I can't see your face.
I don't know who you are. Again, the person reiterated, you know me, I'm your friend.
Now the boy feeling frightened, moved further back in the sandbox away from the fence. Then,
the person walked to the gate, reached over, put his hand on the latch to open the gate.
That is when the boy could see him. He described him as a very tall person, his skin entirely white
looking, his hair black, and he was wearing dark sunglasses so as to not be able to see its eyes.
Dressed in all black clothing as well. Pants, shirt, jacket, all black. He even had shiny black
shoes. The boy thought it reminded him of a vampire from one of the scary movies that he
and his older brother had been watching on TV. And then the man spoke again. This time he was
telling him what to do instead of asking. You do want to play with you. You must ask me to come in.
The boy felt compelled to let the stranger in the yard. The boy got up from the sandbox,
moved toward the gate. As he reached to unlatch it, he heard a loud noise coming from in the house.
It sounded like somebody was pounding on the wall from inside. He thought it was his mother that was
trying to get his attention. Now, turning away from looking at the stranger, he looked toward
the house. The bedroom where his mother had been laying down and a window, he expected to see her
looking out but she was not at the window. Then, he thought that she was about to come out at any
moment and punish him for talking to strangers but she did not come out. So, he turned his head
back to look at the stranger thinking by this time that he must already be in the yard. However,
the stranger was no longer there. The boy now felt puzzled. He knew the stranger had just been
standing right there and he even said aloud, where did he go? It was right at that moment when it got
The boy no longer heard the birds chirping or any other noises coming from the neighborhood
and once the stranger had left, the haziness surrounding the boy was gone too and the sun
began to shine again. Yet still, there was no sound. After getting over his initial unease,
he began to think about how the stranger could have left so quickly. Then, he walked to the
alley gate pausing for a second before opening it. He stepped out a few feet into the alley looking
to see where the stranger had gone but he could not see anyone. Then, he heard a sound that got
his attention. Turning to look at what was making the noise, he sees this enormous black German
shepherd just a few feet away. The dog had its head lowered, mouth snarling, lips back exposing
large white teeth and the hair on the back of his neck was standing up. It was intently staring at
him very intensely. In an instant, it attacked him. The dog sunk its teeth into his right thigh
and then began to aggressively shake. The dog easily outweighed him by at least 40 pounds causing
him to lose his balance, falling. Immediately, the dog released and clamped the jaws around the neck
biting deeply with sharp fangs. The boy was so petrified and filled full of anxiety, he couldn't
breathe either and it was too difficult to cry out. The area of the brain responsible for
controlling the fight or flight response must have become active at that point. The boy could free
himself from the hold that this beast had on his neck thanks to the adrenaline that was now flowing
through him and he quickly stood up. For a second, he thought he would be safe if he could only get
back to his yard and close the gate. As he moved towards the gate, each step became a struggle as
the dog kept biting at him and his buttocks, his thighs, anything and he fell to the ground
repeatedly. Each time, the dog kept attempting to sink its teeth again into the back of him with
every bite leaving a wound tearing at his clothes. It got to the point to where his vision was
blurring and once again, it had managed to mount him and clamp down yet again and this time with
such force, he was afraid his neck would snap and it kept shaking him like a ragdoll from side to
side and he felt like he was about to pass out becoming increasingly weak and short of breath.
The next thing he remembered was hearing a tremendous thump from above and then he fell
to the ground landing on his stomach. The dog released its grip. Barely seeing through eyes
filled with tears, he looked up. There was a teenage girl standing face to face swinging a
long thick tree branch resembling a baseball bat back and forth. Each time the dog had tried to
charge her, she brought that branch down hard whacking it. The dog runs off running down the
alley. Even though it was difficult to breathe, the boy was able to lift himself off the ground
and stand up. The teenage girl stepped over him and placed her hand on his shoulder at that moment.
Looked directly into his eyes before performing a quick check of his body from head to toe
asking, are you all right? Then pointing toward his house, she told him, go to your mother.
Just as strangely as she had appeared, she was gone. He hadn't seen her go back down the alley.
She wasn't there anymore. A peculiar calming feeling swept over him.
So, he stumbled the gate leading into the backyard and latched it behind him.
Walking into the house through the back door, walked into the kitchen, his mother was there
making a glass of iced tea. When she turned around and saw him, she shrieked and instantly
dropped her glass, which shattered. He just stood there, his clothes torn to shreds with
dirt and blood covering him all over. His arms and legs too were covered. His mother immediately
ran over to the phone calling 911, then dashing into the bathroom in a hurry to grab her first
aid kit and some wet washed clothes. Returning to the kitchen, she dropped to her knees and
began to wipe away the dirt and all the blood. And she kept asking him what had happened,
but he was unable to speak because his mouth was so dry and full of dirt.
Realizing this, she went to the sink and got him a glass of water.
As he was drinking the water, trying to clear out any of the dirt in his mouth,
there was a loud knocking at the front door. The paramedics did not wait for an answer.
They entered the home, seeing his condition. The two men immediately crouched down next to him.
They wasted no time getting to work, first ensuring that he had no life-threatening bleeding.
One paramedic checked his heart with a stethoscope, while the other opened a medical
supplies bag, pulling up bandages and gauze. Again, his mother had asked,
what happened to you? And after drinking several gulps of water, he was finally able to tell them
that a dog had attacked. The older paramedic asked, what does the dog look like? All the boy
could say was big and black. The paramedic nodded, looked at his mom, and nodded again.
Several other kids talked about a dog playing in their backyard, and that a policeman had shot the
dog apparently, and that it was being checked for rabies. As they were preparing to transport him
to the hospital, he remembers one of the paramedics telling his mother that the dog had been checked
and he did not have to get rabies shots. He was given a thorough examination of the hospital,
x-rays were taken to ensure that none of his bones had broken, and after that, the nurses
cleaned him up, and both the doctors and nurses were shocked when he told them about the vicious
dog attack. A police investigation into the matter concluded that no teenage girl lived in the area,
whoever she was, wherever she came from, and even where she went is a mystery,
a guardian angel perhaps. It was not all that many years later when he tried to explain to
a girlfriend why he had such a severe fear of dogs growing up, that he recalled the unknown person
who had appeared just before the assaults even until this day. He doesn't know who or what he
or it was, but the dog seemed to manifest the stranger's rage. But if there is one thing I know
for certain, it is that on that bright and sunny day, his guardian angel appeared as a young woman
just in time to save his life. Remembering her, and her brave act of kindness, he is no longer
afraid of dogs. This angel did visit him again since then, but that is a story for another day.
He now believes that what had happened to him that day is just proof that it was not
his time to go, and that the man he initially met was actually the demon disguising itself,
and would later manifest as this dog attacking him. What do you think? I would love to know
