Hi everyone! I’ve had a lot of comments in my last couple of videos from you all saying things like “I hope you’re saving up all those leaves you’re collecting and making compost”! Well, the answer to that was “no”! I’m ashamed to admit that but I never had a place to store them that looked tidy and out of the way.
So that got me thinking about what I could do to start saving my leaves and make what is definitely “Garden Gold” … leaves that can, over time, be stored and turned into beautiful compost.
So that’s what I’m doing today … making a little compost area behind my cabin and I’ve bought a pack of 5 large garden waste bags from Amazon (I’ll put the link down below). I measured the available area and chose bags which should fit snuggly into that area. Once I fill the first bag up to the top, drench it with a full watering can of water, I’ll add the second bag, and so on.
It might take 6 months to a year for the leaves to rot down into compost, but they’ll be out of the way and won’t bother me (I hate things looking untidy). Then at the end of next summer, I can empty the compost onto my borders and I’ll have empty bags again, in time for the next Autumn when I can start filling them up all over again.
In case you don’t watch the very end of today’s video, I added a recap that evening, because when Richard reviewed the video he told me he doubted that the bags were waterproof and the water was going to just sit at the bottom of the bags, so I did go out again and made a lot of slits in the bottom of the bag so now the water can definitely drain right out.
They do come in different sizes but there are many different styles, shapes, makes and sizes on Amazon or from different online shops that might suit your spaces better.

Hello everyone, it's Jeanette here from Enthusiastic Gardener and today I'm going to make
garden gold. There's Lucy, hello Lucy. Now I have what I hope is a solution to my leaf mulch
operation dilemma and what I'm going to do, I've ordered something from Amazon which has arrived
and let me take you around here. I think that I could set up, have a lot of nice space here.
So what I was thinking of, move this wheelbarrow and the little trolley barrel thing
round by my shed, clear this space and I'm going to set up here a wonderful new leaf mulching
operation. So I've moved those round here by the shed, this is where my shed is,
it's getting a little crowded around here but that's the barrel trolley thing and
the wheelbarrow so I can still open the door. Oh I'm breathless, I haven't even started doing
anything yet. Anyway back to the other side because there's one more thing I need to do.
It's a beautiful day today and you can see it's still as anything so there's no wind,
a perfect time to collect leaves and now I have a new collection method in place,
I'm quite excited, I feel I have a purpose. You can see there's a lot of rubbery bricks there
which I've dumped just to get rid of them from time to time and there's some further up there
so what I'll do, I'll move these ones and those ones all up to the end because I don't know what
else to do with them, it's like an out of sight out of mind but let's do that quickly
then I will show you what I have bought. Yes, garden gold, everyone is telling me
leaf mold is the very very best thing for your garden so I've been trying to think how can I
make leaf mold and I was trying to think of a good system that's tidy out of sight
so this is the idea I have come up with. It's from Amazon, I have ordered
five in a pack of these and these are heavy duty garden waste bag sacks,
as I say this one comes in five in a pack, they take 272 litres,
I'll put the link for everything in the description below
and here we are, big wonderful garden bags, these are heavy duty, water can seep through as well
and they are 58 centimetres square, I'll put the measurements on the screen and they take 700
kilos of weight. I'm not going to put all five there because obviously I need to fill up the
one furthest back, start with that and what I'll do after that is when it's full up I will put
water all over it, I've watched all the videos so I'll soak them with water and I'll have to
leave them down the side and it was probably going to take a year, six months to a year,
for these to turn into beautiful leaf mold mulch. I don't know if I'm going to use all five or need
five but now I feel really good because I am saving my leaves and then I guess what I'll have
to do is round about August time, which is nearly a year, then I can empty it out all over the garden
so then the bags are empty and then autumn will come again but now I've always had these, this
is going to be the answer to all my prayers.
So
okay well I'm not sure it looked an awful lot better and do you know what those leaves
which have filled this whole sack, let me show you this sack, obviously I'm going to squash them all
down, I'm going to squash them all down, put water on top of them, give them a good good dousing of
water and they will obviously sink down much lower. Try and do one sackful each weekend, now those
leaves are just from that bit of that tree, you can see the ones, well I think you can anyway,
you can see the ones which have lost its leaves and there's loads more and the wind blows in from
this corner, blows this way, they're all coming and then of course I've got this one over here,
however with that one when the sacks are down the side
hopefully they'll just blow in the sacks and that will do my job for me.
So let's put that bag round the side, that'll be number one, I'll put some water on it and then
come back to you in a moment. The first one is in, fits wonderfully well, perfect size actually
and I'm going to put a whole can of water over it because they have to be wet, it's quite hard
to hold a full can of water and a camera. There we go and yes so that's good because
water is coming out and I could actually put some bricks on the top couldn't I?
To squash it all down but I'm going to leave it at that for the moment and I'll come down
in the week and squash it all a bit. I am a hot mess and I just have to do a little bit here and
there, little and often and maybe once a week, eventually I am bound to get there aren't I?
So I'll put the other bags out as and when I feel one to the top, maybe leave it till the next
weekend, put some more in, some more water and eventually have a row and this time next year I
will have a leaf of gold which will be wonderful. So thank you for watching, I will try not to
subject you to any more leaf picking up videos but thank you for watching this one. I'm Jeanette,
I'm the Enthusiastic Gardener, take care, have fun in your gardens, see you soon.
Hello everyone, just a quick update because I just uploaded this video. Richard doesn't normally,
well he used to watch all my videos but you know after nearly 300 I don't expect him to watch them
all but I said to him can you watch this video with me because he was around and I always watch
them just make sure they've come out all right. He watched the video and he said Jeanette I think
you'll find that those bags are waterproof and you are going to have a pool of water sitting in
the bottom of that bag for months and months and months it will stagnate, what are you going to do
about it? So I'm so glad he did watch the video. So I have a solution, a simple simple solution
because I knew that you wonderful people would all think the exact same thing. I'm just going to cut
little slits underneath and all will be well, the water will be able to be released.
I wanted to reassure you so that's what I'm going to do. Thank you for watching, have fun in your
gardens, take care and have a fabulous fabulous week and I'll see you again next week. Thanks
for watching, bye.
