Ford's 0 to 80% charging speed takes about 40 minutes while GM is at 30 and Tesla only about
15. Sure, charging to 100% in seconds was just a simple fantasy but now it's definitely becoming
a reality with a battery that we have never seen before. So what's what is this battery?
Let's find out in today's episode of Tesla Fans.

A new type of battery charging technology could reduce the charge times of EVs from hours to
mere minutes or even seconds, researchers claim. A new technology pioneered by scientists at the
Institute for Basic Science in South Korea may accelerate charging speeds for electric vehicles
by 200 times, meaning that filling a battery could become even quicker than pumping gas.
Presently, cars take on average 10 hours to fully recharge at home or 20-40 minutes using
cutting-edge superchargers at a charging station. With slow charging times being one of the main
issues in the way of EV adoption, South Korean researchers have looked into the realm of quantum
physics. Quantum batteries work through a phenomenon known as superabsorption, which
involves a quantum mechanical principle relating to a molecule's ability to absorb light.
The process reduces the charging time the more the molecules become entangled,
meaning a quantum battery's charge time becomes faster as the size of the battery increases.
In contrast, conventional battery cells are charged in parallel, independently of one another,
slowing down the process. How long does a quantum battery charge? To put it in a quantifiable way
that all of us can understand, employing quantum charging with a battery that contains about 200
cells would cut the charging time to about 3 minutes at home or about 9 seconds at a charging
station. The source of this quantum speedup lies in the use of entangling operations,
in which the cells are charged collectively as a whole, the researchers noted in their
study published this week in the physics journal Physical Review Letters.
Let's do a comparison to clearly see the fast charging of quantum batteries.
While quantum technologies are still in their infancy, and there is still a long way to go
before these methods can be implemented in practice, in early September of 2021,
StorDot announced that it produced the first 4680 cylindrical cell that it claims can charge in only
10 minutes. They have secured new funding aimed towards developing battery cells capable of
delivering 100 miles or 160 kilometers in 5 minutes of charge by 2024. So StorDot's 4680
battery charges in 10 minutes, but the quantum battery takes only 9 seconds, which is nearly
70 times faster than the Israeli battery manufacturer. The extraordinary properties
of quantum technologies have seen billions of dollars poured into adjacent fields like
quantum computing and quantum cryptography, though quantum batteries remain relatively
unexplored in terms of practical applications. An equally important part when it comes to batteries
is longevity, of course. Allow me to refresh your memory about our good friends over at Tesla and
their 4680 battery. Back in October, the head of Tesla's battery research team, Jeff Dahn,
shared some details of his research during an Energy Storage and Sustainable Engineering
video conference. Dahn revealed that after 3 years of testing, he found that his cells
had a lifespan of over 2 million miles. He has tested his battery over 20,000 cycles,
at a depth of charge-discharge of 100%, and found that his batteries can last 15,000 cycles and
still have 90% of its capacity. If we multiply 15,000 by his estimated driving range of 217 miles,
we get 3.25 million miles in the worst-case scenario, which is when the battery is fully
discharged and charged every cycle. Therefore, Tesla's progress in obtaining a battery that
lasts a million miles is obvious. But what about quantum batteries?
Because it is a bit difficult to manufacture an actual quantum battery, its longevity is not
really a strong point. These batteries can take an estimate of 5-10 years or about 1,000 cycles.
Having these batteries in smart devices or vehicles can take even more. But if this comes true,
the cost of electric-powered vehicles will be low in price along with other transportation costs.
This will lower the product price and much more. Honestly, living with quantum batteries amazes us.
It will be similar to what we see in sci-fi movies. So in terms of longevity, Tesla's battery is
dominating. It's also understandable because Tesla's engineering team along with Elon Musk
himself have been researching this super battery for a long time, and it was born for electric cars.
Meanwhile, the quantum battery has not yet really been popularized and put into mass
production, so it hasn't been optimized yet. So in the future, what advantages will the 4680
battery have to compete with quantum batteries? Developed in concert with its Gigafactory partner
Panasonic, the new 4680 battery cell is significantly beefier than the more familiar
AA-style lithium-ion that Tesla has been using successfully up to now. In terms of EV breakthroughs
though, they're much more than bigger. These new Tesla batteries are a quantum leap forward,
offering nearly five times the energy storage at just half the cost of Tesla's already
industry-leading battery tech. As if that wasn't enough to get excited about, Tesla claims that
the 4680 cell will help to enable a 100-fold increase in battery production by the year 2030,
thanks in part to the new battery type's cylindrical architecture. That's worth noting too
because Tesla is one of the only car manufacturers using a cylindrical battery type. GM and others
are using rectangular packs or blades. That advantage is twofold. First, it means that Tesla
will almost exclusively benefit from the new 4680 cells. Second, it means that the existing
Gigafactory infrastructure will be able to switch to the new battery type more easily than the blade
type manufacturers. In a world where inventory shortages and high consumer demand are driving
prices sky high, those are hugely significant advantages. What do you think about this new
super battery? Will it be able to dominate the battery market in the near future? Let us know
