2022 Honda Civic Prototype First Look_ A New Generation of Civic _ CarGurus
Hi folks, I'm Dave Underkoffler, editor of Autolist.com, a division of CarGurus.
For many drivers, the Honda Civic has always been synonymous with learner's permits or first drives,
but unlike other forms of cheap transportation, the Civic is no penalty box.
It's fun to drive, it's well-made, and it's a great way to commute to school or work.
Now, the 10th-generation Civic has been with us since 2016, so it's time for an upgrade.
And this is it, the 11th-generation Honda Civic.
Well, sort of.
This is actually a prototype, but it's largely what the production model will look like when it goes on sale in late spring of 2021.
Now, if you look closely, you can see we've got the prototypical formula for a modern Civic—wide stance, low-set cabin.
These exterior changes are aimed at making the car even easier to see out of than before and giving the car a more sophisticated look.
The grille now sits a bit lower than before, offset from the headlights.
Despite clearly being, well, a car, this design choice brings the Civic closer visually to Honda's crossovers like the Passport and the CR-V.
The rear end is much less busy than the outgoing Civics.
That's not completely surprising.
There was a lot going on around the back of the 10th-generation Civic.
This 11th-generation Civic will come in either sedan or hatchback versions, plus there will be the sporty Si version and Honda's full-tilt Type R.
And sorry, Coupe fans, no Coupe will be offered for the 11th generation.
Multiple powertrains will be available, and it's likely that all of them will have better efficiency and more power than the outgoing 10th-generation.
And good news for manual transmission fans—Honda will make one available on the Si, the hatchback, and, of course, the Type R.
But there are still many questions.
How much horsepower will the Si and Type R models have?
Will anyone miss the manual transmission on the base sedan?
And will the new Civic be as fun to drive as the last one?
Let us know your thoughts on those questions and more, and how you design the new Civic, in the comments below.
Turning inside, clean and crisp are million-dollar words in automotive design these days, and Honda is using them liberally on this prototype.
The new Civic should have this honeycomb mesh, which doesn't just look cool, it keeps the interior looking simple by hiding the air vents.
You gotta love it when form and function meet in the middle, right?
From a tech perspective, we'll have an all-digital driver information display, complemented by a 9-inch touchscreen display perched atop the dash.
Honda made the mistake of eliminating the volume and tuning knobs when it debuted the 10th-generation Civic.
Clearly, they've learned from their mistake on this model.
All right, folks, there it is, a quick look at the 2022 Honda Civic prototype.
There's still a lot we need to learn about this car, but in the meantime, let us know what you think about it in the comments below.
