Hi everybody and welcome to Truck King. So beside me today 2024 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty. This is our
very first look at this production truck here in Sterling Heights, Michigan and behind the camera
today is Steve. Hey everybody. And we are now going to crawl all over this thing and tell you
what we think. So underneath the hood you've got a choice of two powertrains. The base is a 6.6
liter gas engine whereas the Duramax 6.6 liter diesel is usually the engine of choice. Now this
is mated to a 10 speed Allison transmission and I put a little asterisk beside that because Allison
does not build the transmission. GM builds the transmission however Allison apparently designed
and approved it. Hence the reason that you can stick the Allison sticker right up there on the
hood. So the one thing that is new with this combination are the power numbers. So I know
Steve's got them because I can't remember them. What are they Steve? So this big diesel is now
making 470 horsepower 975 pound feet of torque and that is sent through the 10 speed auto.
Bump down to the 6.6 liter gas v8 and you're making 401 horsepower 464 pound feet of torque
but dad that is also now paired with the 10 speed. So this truck is 10 speed no matter which engine
you get. Well and to that point we also heard that they're not chasing that high torque number
that you're going to see coming out of Ram or Ford. However we were talking some engineers last
week in Texas who told us that they've rejigged things so that more of this torque is coming on
at lower rpm so you're getting more of a kick off the line. Frankly I think that's a good thing.
So when it comes to styling on this new GMC Sierra HD what they've done here is as we like to say
evolution not revolution it's more of a massaging of the things that you're already used to.
We've got little additional badges little trim pieces that have filled in now around for instance
the wheel wells the various different embossed logos around and when we get back to the front
end here you know we still have what I like to call the cheese grater grill and this is one of
those things where GM has said you know what this is a very familiar look and in the case of the
Sierra we're going to keep doing what we do well. Small thing little chrome accent right up here on
the induction hood and this is the functional induction hood is drawing a lot of air into that
diesel and then as we work our way back honestly this is the Denali so we'll go over and have a
look at the ultimate here in a second but certainly one of the things they want to do is they want to
make sure that you know you're in a Duramax and they want to make sure that you can brag that
you've got an Allison transmission however as I said GM builds it Allison simply sticks their name
on it so working our way back one of the things that you've noticed is that yeah wheels a little
taller we've gone from 17 to 18 and some of the styling is very like what I like to call freight
liner-ish so you know I mean this is a big truck it's going to carry a lot of weight and it comes
across as just that highway bruiser. Yeah so you know what dad I'll just spin around real quick
right now we just showed you to the Denali but why don't I take you over to the Denali Ultimate
right away so once you go ultimate the big difference is you lose all the chrome this is
what they're calling Vader chrome so you get that very blacked out kind of monochromatic look but it
still has that shine to it besides that the changes are the same in terms of new grill new bumper
new wheels etc now this truck the 2500 now has 20 inch wheels that's what you're looking at there
but there are optional 22s so you can get some huge wheels on it and now I think we're going to
put it down to the comment section if you had to choose between the Denali and the Denali Ultimate
which one would you get and I'll say the same thing to you dad which one do you like better
well I'm also going to say unfortunately they don't have a pro here which is the entry level
truck yeah because that's where I like the start they always show us the really expensive stuff
however you know what the Denali is is very nice the way it is I still like a little bit of chrome
he's a chrome guy yeah I know some of you younger fellers are all about everything's got to get
blacked out so then yeah so we're just arguing as to whether Vader chrome is actually a reference
to Darth Vader or not so far we don't know for sure but it certainly looks like it yeah we'll
have to find out so yeah let us know which one you think looks better so we have said that the
interior of the new GMC Sierra something that we drove this past summer has improved significantly
well you know they've migrated those into the HDs however the Ultimate is something that's
worth looking at because this truck is all about the details it's not one overarching
improvement it's it's a hundred small ones the type of leather that they're using the stitching
the real open grain wood the laser etching which is an actual relief map of the Denali
mountain in Alaska and the same with for instance these leathers these are a very fine leather
the stitching on these seats for instance is unique to the Ultimate different on the Denali
Denali also uses an open grain leather or a full grain leather now the one thing that I love to
point out is we still have a real column shifter here a real column shifter that works as it always
has I mean apart from the fact that that frees up this center space it also gives you a definite
PRNDL setup all right so park at top drive down below something that we're all used to
I'm very happy to see that in general this has a fantastic interior along with a 13.4 inch
center screen horizontally mounted and 12.4 12.3 12.3 right in the center there so completely
digital dash and you know the nice thing with these is you can you can configure them any way
that you want them in addition to which you're also using the google software so everything
works with your phone right just one thing I just want to quickly say dad is I'm happy to see all
the physical buttons again they didn't get rid of the HVAC controls and I love that bank of switches
down there everything's going digital but especially in a big pickup truck I feel like you just can't
get rid of some of the physical buttons and I think they have a nice mix well and that's good
because I think they've learned their lesson from the guys who tried to go all digital exactly and
honestly what I really never liked was having to go through multiple pages to try to get to
okay and so however my one little takeaway today that I've got to point out is that there are no
movable pedals and when I'm into a Denali Ultimate I was really surprised to see that
and it's something that sticks out for me because it's the first thing my wife asks about because
she's only five feet tall so any truck she gets into she's looking for the movable pedals
I'm really kind of miffed as to why they would not offer that but that's just Howard's old
man pet peeve so yeah I think this is a gorgeous interior as well but why don't you guys let us
know what do you think of the Denali Ultimate interior so the other thing new on this truck
is the multi-pro tailgate that's what they call it over here at GMC you've seen this thing quite
a few times already I think it's a nice feature to add plus you're getting that standard kicker
audio yes it has speakers built into it so if you're tailgating you can do that now the bed
here very much standard General Motors these days I love this bed you get three hard tie downs in
each corner you get all those setups for the different lumber you can put in to separate it
and divide it differently I think it's a nice bed right there you're getting your hookups for your
fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer lights and you still do have a plug back here as well just a 400
watt plug the other emphasis on this truck was trailering technology so it now has adaptive
cruise control that works with a trailer you also have trailer blind spot monitoring now it's not
automatic you do have to go in and put the length of your trailer in but once you do that it will
actually let you know when there's a car beside your trailer another cool thing transparent trailer
that now works with fifth wheels and goosenecks so you can have a big old fifth wheel on there
and see right through it finally there's a new gross combined weight rating alert so if you do
go over your GCW the truck's gonna let you know and it's gonna get mad at you and let you know
that you're overloaded now there's one other truck I want to show you guys it's right here
this is the updated AT4 model of course that's the off-road model it offers all-terrain tires
and a rear locker and skid plates underneath now there's one other piece of news the Sierra is
going to offer an AT4X model that will be related to the new ZR2 HD from Chevrolet now we don't
have details on that yet but soon enough I'm sure they will release what's coming on those two more
hardcore off-road models and when we know we'll share that news with you for now we just have
to make do with this AT4 although I do think it looks pretty good so this GMC Sierra Denali
heavy duty ultimate is coming in the first half of 2023 there's no pricing yet and it'll probably
be next spring before we get a chance to drive it and yeah of course it's very similar to the
Chevy however GMC is placing itself at the pinnacle of GM's truck lineup they are very much
staking a claim to the high ground and they're saying if you want the best you're gonna go
ultimate frankly from what I've seen here today I don't see that there's much that they've missed
out on so that's it folks listen have a quick look at this go down in the comments tell us
