Parkour Pro takes on Dangerous Climb up The North Wall

I'm trying to get world class parkour athlete Toby Seaguar to become a competent wall climber in just 5 days. Yesterday was a blistering start as we made an ascent of this wall. Today we're stepping it up a notch and the grades get bigger. Toby ties into the sharp end and I send him off on a pitch with practically no protection whatsoever. I only got to sleep about half one or something, finished a little bit late yesterday. I'm awake at 6, counting the hours I've slept, but if I want to climb that thing today I need to get some more kit. It's looking slimy in there, I'm not going to lie. I feel like today is the time to sort of set in what I sort of started on yesterday. This is like one of those travel vlogs isn't it, where you get some like terrible porridge update in the morning and some like epic b-roll of the porridge, but we're not going to do that. I'm really kind of like honing on the basics really I guess. I don't want epic porridge b-roll, because the porridge isn't epic. Look at the state of that. I'm a little bit cut up from the cam battles sort of thing, once you chalk up and start climbing again you sort of forget about it. I was thinking we could climb on the north wall. When the day ends up getting longer it will come down to me being able to actually like relax. The first pitch maybe or the second pitch I actually think you could potentially lead. I was a little bit gripped at points yesterday, even though the climb is just like well within the limits. I can just climb this fine, but right now I am holding on really really really tight. And it's five pitches, so probably a little bit more than yesterday, but the top pitches are a bit harder. I'm pretty much on top right now, I'm still gripped. Yeah I think we should do that. I think that's the plan. There's potential to do like a direct finish, new route. We've got the micros coming out today, that means things are stepping up when you get the micros out. Yeah Pete did fill me in on this crazy rockfall. How long ago was it? I think it was a couple of years ago. A few years ago? Yeah. That is a percentage of that cliff face. And we'll be walking under that swiftly on the way back. A long old trudge for a ski lift. As long as the climbing to walking ratio is fine. How do you decide that? Is that entirely subjective? The climbing ratio has to be higher in percentage. Time or? Yeah time. So if it takes you like three days to walk in on an expedition for example, and you have two days climbing, and you have three days walking out. Not worth it. Terrible. Terrible ratio. Terrible idea. Whereas if you have an hour walk in, and six hours to climb the route, an hour walk out. Good ratios. Okay we like that. Now you look like you know what you're doing. Rope around your neck, gear on the harness, ready to climb the wall. Bags left behind, in a sensible spot. In a sensible spot. Killing it mate. We're basically heading up there, and can you see the big crack splitting that wall? That's what we're going up. If I do lead one of these first pitches, that's probably the biggest deal for me. Yeah. Aside from the grade being at my absolute limit for the last pitch. We'll deal with that when we get to it I guess. Toby's going to do his first lead. No second trad lead ever. It's so unknown is that. Yeah. I'm just going to play it by ear. I don't know why I'm making funny pretend noises like I'm nervous. I'm not actually nervous yet. I shouldn't do that should I? Smush it up. No bother. I'm just going to roll myself up. If I don't want to do that, I won't do it. Make sure you rack up properly, so take all my stuff. First safety is climbing ability though. That's what I always say. Is that a little offset? Let it out. How am I going to know when to use that? I can't wait for you to vlog your way up my placements. That's going to be hilarious. Toby on his first Norwegian lead. We're kicking it off with a big grass grab here. Is it alright for gear to come up and out and over like that? Yeah. Usually you would generally take people on not this adventurous climbing as their second ever trad lead, but that is not going anywhere. What do you rate it? Like a solid naive 10. I'm going to confidently go for a 10 and I'd love you to let me know if you agree. First bit of gear which is the 10 out of 10. Let's take a look. It's a good'un. The only thing which maybe I would have done differently is put the wide lobes on the bottom because when you place them in horizontal breaks then it just makes the cam a little bit more stable. But I mean it's not going to come out if you don't do that. You're all good. It's going to walk it's way out as I crack on isn't it? Oh my god the gloves man. They're amazing. Place number two with bloody miles up. He hasn't placed much has he? I'd say I'd give the first one a 9 and that one a 10. See you wouldn't get anybody else sending you this sort of quality. Quality. Climbing. We're in the bushes. I can just get Toby to do all the grassy pitches. It'd be interesting to see whether he absolutely loved it. Best pitch. Best pitch of his life. What are cams like on slime? I wonder if that's too wide. It's not my favourite placement Toby. It's a little bit tipped out that one. Maybe he put it down there and it's actually walked. Could have done. Because that's pretty good. But I would have probably gone for a blue in there I think. I think he's going to think that this is maybe normal. This is what people normally do. So slimy where I want to go. I'm giving him a good taste. That was a bit scary. I don't have nuts. He's got the micros out. He said he wasn't going to be using those today. Here he is using them. Not my favourite but I think it would have held a small fall. Not a monster fall though. But I doubt you would have been taking monster falls. It goes a lot deeper than I thought. It's just so wet as well. It's soaking. Very wet. You can see why I said it was wet now. It's literally dripping down the chimney. Get involved. It does not look inviting as your second ever lead. And it's dripping inside. Sorry Toby. But let's get involved. Didn't think I'd be going to this tiny stuff. There'll be more. I just don't really want to climb too far to get there. There's nothing underneath. I'll carry on looking in a sec. It's tough to keep climbing. I'm so wet. What the f*** am I doing up here? Just would like a little bit more in here. That's half debating whether to go down, round and up there. Don't know if it's as easy as it looks. I just want a piece from just there. It's so deep. Super, super deep. Yeah, true. Be interested to see what you think of that actually. Seems alright. That's a good little cheeky placement, that one. Gotta be. Oh, yes. Happy days. That's an absolute freaking bomber. Onwards into the slime. Hope you can get that out. Oh, ----. Hang on a second. I've really pushed that really deep. Hang on a minute. I'm going to have to get this out. Be a nice spot for a nut there. Get a hold of that. Oh, happy days. Not a lot here. Maybe I'll keep walking up a bit. Something else would be nice. Get involved. Clove into that. Belay from there. Sling round. Yeah. This is the bit where the only goal is not to kill Pete Whittaker. Don't kill Pete. Those two up there aren't going anywhere. I suppose that's kind of all that matters for now. Don't kill Pete. The next thing is to see what the belay is like. Or we're all going to fall to our death. I feel like there's a second lead. You wouldn't really send somebody up that. But you totally smashed it. Okay, first ever lead. E2. Second ever lead. Some awful green wet chimney. Just like, yeah, Toby, go on, crack on. Oh, you've guide mode on yourself. Yeah. Interesting. Should I have done it here or something? It's probably nicer on the belay. Because then if I fall off, the weight doesn't go onto you. We're at the belay. This is what our life depends on. Let's double check that our life is good. It's flaming. Smashed it. Yes. Absolute train stoppers. Really low. Yeah, now that's good. Pitch two. He's off. Last time I did that was a cellar, I think. Excellent. Start it up. Hardest pitch of the two days. Yeah, definitely. Yeah? It was a good effort though. I'm happy with it. Yeah, I'm happy with it. I would have been way less annoyed if I fell off like halfway up. I think it was like two metres I had left. I couldn't have done that though when I finally did get up. I was still trying and that was after a rest, so. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. It's just that finger jam situation. Got to get better at that. Yeah. It's a bit concerning that this last pitch we're, well, we're not at it yet, but this last pitch is a bit spicier than that one. Yeah, so we've got like three more pitches. Yeah, yeah. We've got like a short one here, which is similar to this, but a bit harder. Oh, OK. I didn't know that. But I'm going to take the bag. Oh, nice. Yeah. Safe. Nice one. And then we have another pitch which is bouldery. Nice. So it's going to suit you. OK, yeah. So I've just done pitch number four, which is one of the cruxes, and Toby's just following now. Come on. Yes. Good. Come on. It'll be very interesting to see whether he's able to do this one. This is my quality four-piece belay. I've got red, green, grey, bottom of wire. I went for four because these ones were a little bit flared and tipped out, so. But jobs are good, aren't they? Yeah. Keep it on. Come on. Nicely done. It'll be interesting to hear his thoughts when he gets up to the top. I've thrown him in at the deep end. That can be, that can be sad for sure. Oh, no underest. Oh. Face outwards like Honnold. A good way of taking him out is just holding the quickdraw and yanking it upwards. Yeah. You need to be a little bit higher maybe. Yes. Nicely done. Yep, yep, yep, yep. It's all on your feet, this last bit. What's that doing in there? That's some aid gear. Oh my days. Well done. That was hard. That was really hard. Yeah, yeah, that was... Yeah. That was a hard pitch. Actually, I know you've been doing this ---- since you were seven, but... That still just blows my total mind. That you led that. Nicely done. Boom. Good work. Excellent. Let me sit down. I cannot wait to sit down. Oh my God. That was hard. I fought well hard. That was great. Could get it in one, like with a little bit of, you know, a few goes. Back to the bottom. Oh, again, if I knew the sequence. Yeah. But yeah, a couple of bits just totally caught me off. Yeah, two falls. Yeah. And a lot of sitting on the rope in between. Yeah. I will take that. Yeah. And cash it in. Cash it in. It's all moves in the bank. Mate, totally. It's all moves in the bank. Totally. Finger jams. Still want to get them. Put a bit more time into them. Just try them. I cranked them. They take off a bit of weight, but nothing to like pull on. Big pitch that one. Monster pitch. You're probably used to walking across some weird ---- like this, aren't you? I don't know. I've seen you walking across like pipes and. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's flat in it. Oh, flat in it. You've got something to jump to, worst case. Yeah, yeah. Up here by now. Just grab onto Pete's leg. This is the hard bit by now. Come on. Nice. That was hard with the rucksack on. Dragging you down, mate. Good ----, man. Nice. Here you go. Crooks of the day. Toby. Chalking up. Ready to go big. Right. It's like indoor bouldering. Just imagine it indoor bouldering. I just want the flash, you know. That's what I want. Oh, man. It looks so techie, man. If you're telling me to watch you. My hopes and dreams start to disintegrate in front of me. See what my energy's like after that, after the day. How do you swap feet here? Yes. Come on. ------- hell. You stand up into this. There's a little undercut in the roof. Jesus, man. Come on. You've got it. Slope around the corner. Yes. Wide step. Ledge. Come on. You've got it. Yes. Here he is. Come on. Step round. What the **** do you do here? Just pull round on that edge. Come on. You've got it. Good step round. There's another edge high up as well. There. Come on. You're in. You're bloody in. Here he is. He's in. Happy days. Well done. Oh, I'm happy lads. Double gaston and then bumping the foot up to the smear. That felt proper. Oh, cheers for shouting this ledge here. Yeah, that was the key, wasn't it? I was not getting round on that. Alright. Oh, happy that actually. I wasn't about that. Yeah. Nice one. Yeah. That was really good. Really good. Really happy with that. Yeah. That's the first sequence I've been able to watch like close up. Yeah. That you've been doing. I think all the crutches previously have been so far away from me that I've either like stopped focusing on what you're doing and just the belay or I can't really see what's going on. That one I think I was just staring like I want to get this one. I want to get this one. Yeah. Oh, nice one. Oh, that move there felt wicked. That was satisfying. Good man for leading that ----, man. Look at that. Almost like trying to change an SD card. I think you can do a lead if you fancied it. No. Yeah. Like a little traverse. Where am I going? Over there? Yeah. Rope swing time. Toby on the lead on the down climb. Oh, this is horrible. Good. Delicate with the feet. Come onto that edge. Nice. There you go. Excellent. Nicely done. This is new. It's going to look epic when you get over there. Feet, Seaguar. Feet. Yeah. Feet. It's all in the feet this bit. Feet. You're good with feet. Balancing on pipes and walls. They're so much bigger. Nicely done. Steady away. Nice one, Toby. Looks cool. Run out looks good. Yeah, I'm not sure there is actually much gear across here. That's a bit ----. Probably break that off. I mean, yeah, I can definitely crack on. Looking like a seasoned pro already. Nice. Steady away on the feet. Nicely done. You can see that bit of gear. Is that gear supposed to be a joke or something? Say again. Jesus. Is that just bummer as heck then? The gear? Yeah. Well, look. It's got like a bit of string attached to it with a beaner on the end. Can you see it? Yeah, it's probably. That's not great, is it? That should be in the rock. One is. Oh, right. Okay. The other end, there's a nut. Yeah. Should I try and put that in? I'd try and put that in. Yeah, that should be in. Yeah. Oh, my God. The other piece isn't that solid either. Yeah. That's heavy. I like your thinking though. Bloody hell. Just don't fall, right? Okay. Just down there, yeah? All right. I'd love to place another bit, but **** all about. It's just a big rope swing. Worst case, isn't it? It's a big one. No, all right. I can't see what's there. That's why I'm just a bit... Yeah. Yeah, almost. That's scary. I'm not nervous just yet. I'm just like, when I commit to that little bit there, I'm just a bit scared of that. That's it. Yeah, steady weight. Good on the feet. Nice one, Toby. Yeah, nicely done. Yeah, really nicely done. Oh, God. So, belay right at the bottom of the chimney, yeah? Okay. Yeah, yeah. Just getting across to the other one. Oh, yeah. I'm safe. I was safe ages ago. Sorry, yeah. Okay, you're on belay. Yeah, jeez. I'm pretty sure I'm not rope swinging on that. That's good. It's looking good. Yeah. Definitely green. Bad between my legs. Again. Moving up the green. When you got on top of this sort of flaky thing, did you kind of just go out from there? Yeah. All right. That was a little bit trickier than I thought. Yeah. I don't know how it moves, but I was going like back and forward a lot. Smashed it. Good job all round. Big up. Well done. That was so good. More tough than yesterday, that one. Yeah. Oh, just infinitely. Day two and I feel like I've done a week's worth of climbing by my standard. Oh, so good. Yeah, I had a bit of a lost energy, I think, after that third pitch, maybe. Just like lost energy. I think I got a bit rinsed. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then, yeah, after that little sort of boulder probably bit, I was psyched again. It's probably the double chocolate bar as well. How long is a walk down, you reckon? A walk down, it's probably like an hour, actually, because that gully, you just have to take your time. It's like, it's full of like moving rocks. How was that day for you? I haven't asked that yet. That was good. Yeah, good day. Psyched. I'm going to trudge our way back down. You can see the car, look. It's not over. I can't get my harness on. I just can't get this harness on. Cherry on top, harnesses off. This whole climbing for the whole day thing. Tough, tough job. Commendable guys. I fell over so much on the way down, I'm so tired. Slipping, sliding, rocks flying past Pete. Jesus. He's honestly a mountain goat, it's ridiculous. If I knew how good his foot placement was on all these rocks, downhill, I'd have set some hard challenges for the parkour. He's quick across this terrain, it's sick to see, but really hard to catch up. I just gave up after a while, got at my own pace. And suddenly my legs turned to jelly. Good moment actually, just the wall alone is lit by the sunset. That's a day. That's a day, yes. That's a day. That is a day, yeah. For me, for sure. If you enjoyed day two, subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes from this series, as I can guarantee you're not going to want to miss day three. Toby had planned for a rest day, but the rest day I had in mind was a little different. Early viewers, you can set a reminder for tomorrow's premiere using the link on screen, or if you're later, dive straight into day three now. That hurts.
