In today's video, I'm gonna give you three secrets.
These are things that you can instantly add into your game
and get a quicker shot off.
Stephen Curry's obviously got a little bit
of a height disadvantage compared to most players, right?
So he's gotta get that shot off quick.
Well, if you're a shorter player,
this is gonna be huge for you,
but if you're a taller player,
obviously it's gonna help you as well.
And at the end of the video,
I'm gonna give you a way to instantly
start making more shots off the drip.
First thing we gotta talk about
comes down to something you're not even thinking about.
In fact, all these tips don't have anything to do
with the actual shot release
as far as the ball moving up quick.
I think you know if you speed that up,
that'll make the shot quicker.
These are some of the more overlooked things,
and they all go into the setup from the dribble,
a little transition period
that doesn't get talked about enough,
but something that can instantly make everything quicker.
The first thing we gotta talk about is his stance.
When he's doing his dribble footwork,
if you watch him, 90% of the time,
he's got his stance pretty darn close to shooting position.
Sometimes when he needs to sell a bigger fake,
he'll get a little bit wider,
or sometimes he'll come a little more upright and narrow,
but most of the time, if you watch him when he's dribbling,
even when he's pulling off some little quick combos,
he's gonna have those feet closer to shooting position.
What that allows him to do is obviously
more quickly get on balance for a good shot.
If he was way out here,
it's gonna make it a little bit harder.
Some players do do those types of fakes,
and it gives them the benefit
of being able to sell a bigger fake,
but with Curry, he typically does almost everything
a little bit tighter and sharper and more compact.
That's gonna give him the benefit
of doing everything a little bit quicker
since it's not so extended.
He can get the shot off quicker,
and then once he starts making some shots,
fenders start playing him tighter, right?
So then he can blow by them easily
because they're closer versus if they're far away,
it's really hard to get past them, right?
So then next time, if he wants to give them a fake,
they know he's beat them, and since they're so close,
they can get beat more easily.
They're gonna go flying, boom, he gets that quick shot off,
all while taking smaller steps with his dribbling.
Second secret to why he's able to get a shot off
to dribble so quick has to do with how he dribbles.
Everyone likes to think about how quick the shot is,
but there's that transition period going into the shot
that we gotta work on speeding it up, right?
So a lot of times, you'll hear coaches teach players
always dribble at about waist height or lower
or even knee height or lower,
and I'm a big advocate of having that type of handle,
having the ability to do that,
but you should not limit yourself
to only dribbling that way,
and if you watch Curry when he dribbles,
he typically dribbles right around waist height,
sometimes even a little bit above waist height,
and why would that help, you think?
Where do you shoot from to start the shot?
Right here, right?
So by dribbling the basketball a little higher,
that gives him the ability to get into that shot
more quickly, but there's a couple other things
with his dribbling.
He also is gonna typically get some good snap
on that dribble.
He doesn't just push the ball across kind of soft,
that would slow everything down.
Getting snap onto the dribble
gets the ball into this hand quicker,
that makes the ability for him
to get into that shot quicker.
The other thing he does is he'll get this second hand
if he's gonna do a crossover low,
waiting to catch the basketball in a low position
so he can start to gather it more quickly,
or even from a regular dribble,
he's gonna keep that hand lower
so he can get into that shot more quickly.
Dribbling around waist height,
a little more snap to the dribbles,
and getting the hand that's gonna catch the basketball
low to the ground, close to the basketball,
so you can catch it instantly
and start getting into that shot comfortably and accurately.
Third thing, and this might seem similar to the first tip,
but it's actually a lot different, footwork.
When we're talking footwork,
it's both how he does his footwork
and what he does with his footwork.
As far as how he does his footwork,
typically he's gonna be on the balls of his feet
so he can spring up into that shot more quickly
versus landing flat-footed on his heels.
It's gonna take a little bit longer to get that shot off
and he won't get as much spring, speed, or power on the shot.
But the other big thing is mastering
the different types of footwork.
What makes him so deadly
with being able to get his shot off off the dribble
is he's mastered all of his footwork patterns.
So there's a one-two step to the left, right-left.
You could also work on left-right to the left.
Not as common, but you will see
he'll encourage you to do that from time to time.
To the right, he's gonna work on both variations
of that one-two step.
He's gonna work on a step back, taking a one-two step.
And then he also has a really quick hop
to give him other options to get the shot off even quicker.
Typically the hop is gonna be the quickest option
and he's really good at getting that off.
That can be done to the left, to the right,
or from a step back.
That one-two step, if you watch,
a lot of times he'll act like he's gonna attack hard
with this first step to sell kind of like a fake
to get the defender to play off of him.
And then he's real efficient with his steps
by quickly just getting that one more step
to quickly rise into that shot,
eliminating any extra steps.
