Hey there.
Welcome to my channel where I take you on tours of creative and alternative
homes. Last night,
I got to stay in this amazing forest house that you see behind me.
It looks a little bit like a tree house and it was designed and built by a
famous builder here in the Pacific Northwest.
The forest house is located on one of the San Juan islands,
and it's only accessible by ferry,
which makes staying here all that more enchanting.
We're going to meet the owner,
Suzanne who lived in this house for eight years before turning it into a dreamy
vacation rental. If you like videos like this,

every single time I publish a new tour.
But right now let's take a look at this magical forest getaway.
Hi, I'm Suzanne and this is the forest house.
The builder is Sunray Kelly. He's a famous Pacific Northwest builder.
He does these crazy places.
I bought the house in 2002.
It captured my heart. I couldn't let it go. I had to get it.
There were other things on the market, but it had to be this place.
I love everything about this house.
I sit in the tub for hours with the water up to here.
I love the quietness of sleeping here.
It was a wonderful place to live for eight years.
And then I decided I wanted to share it with other people.
People love the uniqueness. They want to experience something different.
Now it's like totally packed. There's hardly any days available.
I have to mark things off the calendar to get anything done here.
This house is on Orcas Island. You get here by ferry,
hour and 20 minute ferry. Very special place.
Everyone should come to Orcas Island. I'm serious.
It is amazing here. Beautiful everywhere you go.
I think more people need to build houses like this.
That's why I own this house. It's a role model for others.
This is handcrafted.
And so I love that because it has heart and soul in it.
It's got a lot of attention to detail.
And the comments from people have been that they just love it.
You can feel it. It oozes out of the walls.
Let's go inside. So this is the main living room.
It's really difficult to furnish because it's got 12 sides to it.
The 12 sides are a sacred amount of sides.
Of course it couldn't be four walls.
I have a curved couch for the curved wall.
Every door is handmade.
You can open it up and get a little air. Um, and then those are burls.
The windows. I love the windows.
They're all cathedral shaped windows, kind of Hobbit like.
People comment on them all the time.
So I love that part about this house.
I installed the bookshelves. That was the first thing I did actually.
I built those cause I had a ton of books and it was totally full.
So this is my extra stash of books.
From this room we'll go into the kitchen, tub room and bathroom.
We have the laundry room here and then we have the toilet room here.
Interior doors have unique candles. So this is the toilet room.
We put this additional spalted alder live edge with a cherry backsplash.
I found this metal company that does these really unique metal wear in Portland
and so I put that in. I put this cool hook in right here.
We put this on these latches here. Very small space.
Everything had to be just right. Here's the tub room.
Here the skylight brings more light in. Original tub.
We redid the floors. The tub is really deep.
It used to, when I got here, the water went out the back.
We just had a pipe go into the backyard.
So since then I've done it the right way. Put it into the septic.
One person fits in there very comfortably. Two people can fit,
but it's better one person. It's a Japanese soaking tub.
I've spent hours in that tub meditating, you know, just zoning out.
Yeah, it's been great.
Then the focus of the light coming down makes it unique.
It feels so good to be here. We're used to seeing four, you know,
boxes basically, and this is all around.
So people are curious. They want to come see it.
They want to come stay and experience it.
And I've got like five book fulls of really positive
experiences. So yeah, people love it.
So this is the kitchen that is off the main room down the hall.
Believe it or not, I put the kitchen in with a friend. When I lived here,
there was just a closet here. And after a couple of years,
I finally put a small kitchen in this alcove right here.
When we wanted the real kitchen,
we had to take the closet out and put all this in.
This is a curved wall.
So it makes putting this kitchen in very difficult.
All the angles had to be perfect. Live edge alder,
I believe copper sink.
We got a smaller propane stove, fridge,
everything had to fit perfectly.
And then we needed drawer pulls one day.
We have one piece of driftwood that was together. And I said,
why don't we use that for the drawer pull, you know?
And so we cut it to size. It was a perfect size.
And we put those on the front of the drawers. Cherry,
live edge shells. I love live edge.
I just think it brings more feeling and emotion and
heart to a place.
Out here, three structures are connected with the deck.
I love that it feels so much bigger than just the inside.
I also wanted bigger rail tops. So you could eat out here.
Actually, you could have a bunch of different stools if you wanted to.
The tower is over there. It's a two story tower with a balcony.
It's two bedrooms.
The pod here has a bed and then the upstairs has a bed
there.
So this is the newest addition with a cupola and a living
roof. Once I had the deck built, we built the pod on top.
So this is the main bedroom, six sided,
kind of unique trimming of the windows.
These windows were recycled.
We put the biggest windows out that way.
So we could see the view in here with smaller windows over here.
So they have some privacy,
the French doors so that there's more light coming in.
This is the tower. This is sort of an office closet.
Let's head up the stairs and I'll show you the tower bedroom.
This was my bedroom when I lived here for about eight years.
This is a great place to sleep because you get to see
everything. Love the windows, love the big bubble.
You can see the stars at night.
Same cathedral windows with the cool
latches. And then the balcony is out here.
You get to observe everything out here.
It's really a great spot to hang out and contemplate.
Here you can really see what's going on down below.
I love that view. I mean, it's amazing.
Forest house on Orcas Island,
enchantment and wonder is whimsical,
unique and hobbit-like. That's how I would describe it.
I hope you guys enjoyed this week's video.
