In this video, we will show you how the Landmark Trust’s team rescued Llwyn Celyn’s historic roof. This is not simple work. It is a labor of love. In historic buildings, roof repair or restoration has a lot more to the job than you would imagine. To maintain the original design, style, and materials of a historic building, you need to understand the knowledge of these monumental structures. And also make sure the cost is under control.

Llwyn Celyn is regarded as one of the most remarkable of all surviving late-medieval houses in Wales. The house is located in the Llanthony Valley, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It was built in 1420 on the lands of the Llanthony Priory. Llwyn Celyn is a very rare survival from so soon after the destruction caused by Owain Glyn Dŵr’s Rising against the English Crown.
Possibly a prior’s house, Llwyn Celyn is rich in rare medieval features and has barely changed since around 1690. By the early 21st century, the house was in a state of decay and, in 2014, ownership passed to the Landmark Trust.
The Landmark Trust is a British building conservation charity, founded in 1965 by Sir John and Lady Smith, that rescues buildings of historic interest or architectural merit and then makes them available for holiday rental. The Trust's headquarters is at Shottesbrooke in Berkshire.

Caelan is a project for the
National Library of Wales
The Llanddewi Brefi Library is launching the full service
Confirm the accuracy of the farm
resources and find a new period to use
All resources were related to impossible negotiations
The road planning resources deal with specific discussions themselves
I am working on the project for the Caelan project
I've been dealing with this for maybe 4 years now
We actually started doing the periodic work in April of that year
A little each day in reality
Although the skills in terms of the resource
We don't know what we will end up getting
We know what some of the problems were
We know that water is flowing through the resource
We hope to reach more resources
We clearly don't know much more than that
So we have started to go up
We have found water for the resource
more water for the resource
Add a little water to the resource
outside the resource
Most of this is done by interest from the resource to the resource
The most recent decades
This resource is very useful Therefore this is
very important as a
more comprehensive resource
I will try to make the most of the resource
I will try to take the most possible
e original structure
So what have we done with the resource
We will do the
most we can
I am trying to produce its historical
fabric therefore this can be seen by everyone
Other resources around the organization
more resources have been gained during 2
It is used
as a valuable resource around the world
In the same way the more and
the less are more resources
Felly we are not producing the extra resource
we are not providing the extra resource
Hanesol returns to the resources
There was a shortage of all resources it was necessary
to share them in order to have contact with the structure
The additional resource being
produced is related to more
One of the specific areas
where we have a problem is
the additional resource
between the soul and the right
We have more resources
to provide more resources
and we do not do
Common connection for additional resources there
Therefore we have changed that
They have even more resources for that
But after that
all that timber is
In different environments more resources
like more resources
in this area
The additional resource
Because of the greater amount of
timber we have
contacted the examples
Felly we have been able to design and publish the resources
In one of the two environments we have taken
additional resources to
improve the difficulty
And the resources
have been very much
given in a way that could
We will share in the
future or as they
cannot see it as part of this resource
Felly their services
have been very difficult
to support the carpenters and take them in
The decision to
share more resources
for the future
is not an easy one
About examples
connect understand
the differences
in future
resources
The Clwyn Celyn plan
is for its
resources Do you remember that
we are talking abou
Choose this one
What choice then gives us
the warning Well that's
the choice after you came and the country
They had shared the
basic ones and started They were
introducing them clearly
It's a good
choice indeed for
an obstacle of 5 or 10 years
I believe things
have started to go
well Therefore that 's
why more steel is
In the basics
Well here are the basics
This is the root
the root that
is received
The steel parts
are going to the material
from the basic parts
and you can feel them
If you are giving your choice here
Felly you can see
here the tool one
of the best steel
ones and that's going
Their tool is one of
the basic ones
Felly this
decision is not
to see any more
steel here is
This will
be one of the
most beautiful rooms
It is going to be in
the main room they
have the equipment nice
I don't want to see
any more
basic steel
anymore and that' s why they keep it
Their tool is one
of the basic ones
What we have done
is sympathetic
A challenge with the tool from the experts
We do not provide
external resources
A new ID and basic details
And that's important
ere are many events
of the basic elements
and many basic elements
We are not introducing it in
a general way Therefore it is important that we do not start introducing it
ernal resources
in the basic
room no
If we had
not introduced steel trusses
We are at the steel
mouth there the basic rations
are failing then we will change
The basic facts are throughout the report and that
can be difficult for a historical report
Otherwise we may be introducing the problem we are
looking at it here
and we will present
this problem here
Because we have changed the basic ingredients
Therefore it is important
What are we doing getting involved in the way
The report has worked first
First this road
would have had a
connection from this
point along the way
They are here
This more is
made on the
way that this
more is made
The road here
Introducing
this one here
We have introduced
this part
here which means the
part ca
To use it
We can
go back from
that and then we had
Do the rest of this
to introduce
where the rest of this
from this side
The wave of this
majority occurred in the 17th century when
this book was writte
We have adapted
them for the sacred purpose
and we have allowed
this part of the solar
That's the rest
This is part
of the structure
this way
When we came
to the entrance
A chael y
cilindwyd roedd y rhagor
hon yn bwysig tuag at fe allan
Felly with some buildings of the main rafters
A raid its attack and its removal from the bridgehead
We are reaching a point where we must leave the organization in order to campaign
where it is necessary for us to be
To produce the event from the stage
and to send it back in its leaving
The process of forging is a common part of shaping the blade on Clwyn Kellyn
They stopped the cart from moving forward and backward
They also have a creative job
They are particularly taken
with a part of the main raft
They campaign in places where
they are absent or in some places they campaign completely
This is what we are trying to
do this is what we are saying
This is what we are
saying my two sisters with a map of the night
And a healthy appearance
The gulls will return to the shore
They will shop
This is planning the resource board
This will be placed inside the drum and
the second layer will go on the outside
In this area Lath Fawr we have
already left the houses recently
This will provide the painting
supplies of the historical painter
The second wave had a little second wave
which was very good
Finally were able to get 75% involved in writing
That was not the comment when we completed the form
We got 50%
And when we got to show the forms
You will be dealing with the
institution and the building
We have returned the exhibits to their original form
It does that way
We don't have the range of the form the range of the petrographic comments to understand well
The geologist produces
We are taking samples of the form
from the core we are currently using
They are connected in
a way that we will get
Many slopes are in the shape of a
hill in Celyn and among the shape
They are being notified of the Wales Form
Today this form is interesting
It appears to be an interesting
phenomenon in the most noticeable forms
You can do this in different ways
and that was something
I am very interested in myself
and in the people who work for me
They found the way
to the experience as it says
They are saying this
in the Welsh style
There is lead in the detail
At present this form has been made with lead or fibreglass
Every year they were unable to
obtain a license and were unable
to obtain a fibroglas
Felly how did they do this in such a way
Anything that comes in
They are going down there
And we are trying to take them with the thing that is going down
Felly we are trying to take
anything that's going down there
I will take the path that goes down
The original form is related to
He can imagine
a big form
The shape was established with a
set of brushes
and the shapes were made
with pegs so that
they can be attached
one for each which are locally sourced
It is moving forward
This form relates to the original form
and the original form
This form connects the
designs that
will kill cases
The large form in the water
and the large form and line in the water
The designs of the first
In your home make them
safe before you teach
them When other designs are being copied
The operators are consulting
the tower in order for them to ge
They are available in their original form
We will go to the tower
from the way that we have a 30
30 inches 30 inches is the longest that they have So we know where we are We've basically
gone from a 30-inch-long slate all the way down to a 10 at the top Obviously it'll
Give a seamless effect There will be no jumps in the course as you'll see as
it goes on Up Even though we are dealing with a historic
roof modern day building regulations still
Apply to ensure that it performs correctly British standards regarding overlaps
are based on a building's location and the angle of the pitch of the roof
Basically it's a heavy rain index and the area where we are is classified as severe
Everything from west Wales and further over basically along the west coast Scotland
England Wales and so on are classified as very severe So then it basically tells us
On here so we're in severe here So we know the roof pitch is roughly 45 degrees so that
we know it'll tell us there we're over
here So we know our minimum head lap is 69
Right so this is the Beast House This is going to be an interpretation center This
building like the house has suffered from neglect It has had some propping and shoring
up over its history but the wall behind me here on the north side had developed a significant
bow in it which was a major concern for the engineer We've actually now had to take
Bring it down to the foundation and rebuild Structural problems like
this have been resolved in different ways across the Clwyn Kellyn site
These conservation dilemmas have been the subject of on-site training for students and professionals In an ideal world
we would just be
taking a pure conservation approach to every aspect
of every project but there isn't enough money available to do that So at some point
we have to be a little bit pragmatic about our approach and on this site the beautiful
The thing is that we have a cluster of buildings so we can take a different approach with
different buildings With historic fabric we have to understand how we've gotten to the point tha
We've got to now and what we're going to
do to make sure we secure that fabric moving forward
The roof here is going to use stone tiles again which blends this building in very nicely
with the house So we'll remove the profiled tin sheeting and put the stone tiles back on
e roof So we need to be sure then that the whole of this roof structure is in good
order to take the terrific weight of all the stone tiles The engineer's had an early
Look at the roof We've identified one or two additional
repairs that we need to do here hopefully nothing too major
The whole of the structure has moved south There are buttresses on the outside of the
south face of the wall which are obviously holding the building up and there's one tie
On this truss on this side here where they should normally act in tension it
appears to be acting in compression and has got a banana curve in it It's obviously
It has been put under some considerable strain in its lifetime
Right so this is the threshing barn and this building is going to be used now as a
community use space The building has in its lifetime been re-roofed We don't know
Whether it originally had a stone tile roof but there's evidence that the ventilation
slots have been cut through so we're pretty certain this roof has been lowered so it may
We have had a stone tile roof in the past but we're going to simply put back a profiled tin
roof insulated so that it makes the space more comfortable in the winter months Obviously
Block up the slots with glazing One of the big problems we have here is that the
gable wall on the east side was slipping down the valley and hence the strapping and
Cantilever there to hold the wall in and stabilize it The roof structure is currently
a series of iron frames We are discussing with the engineers whether we can have
These are repaired There are one or two bolts missing so it may be that simply by putting
the bolts back we re-introduce this integrity The alternative was to have some new timber
A set of trusses made up but like all these projects we don't want to spend money unnecessarily
So if we can make use of or reuse these frames then we will The project to save Glewing
Kellyn has posed many challenges for the team The advanced state of decay of all the buildings
has meant that no single approach to conservation could be applied The project team guided
by our structural engineer were able to weigh up the needs of each building against its
end use while keeping costs in check This fluid and informed approach has ensured tha
The maximum amount of
historic fabric has been preserved along with the character of each building
