WE HAVE A GOALIE GOAL!

We just had one of everyone's favorite moments, a goalie goal.
This was in the AHL.
The goal was scored by Jesper Valstead of the Iowa Wild,
which is obviously the Minnesota Wild's farm team.
The 19 year old goalie prospect was selected 20th overall in 2021.
And with 37 saves on 39 shots, he not only had a goal,
but a great game and his first win of the year.
He also has a pretty impressive resume.
Last year, he led the Swedish Elite League, which is Sweden's
highest professional men's league in the goals against average at 1.98,
which was a 0.918 save percentage in 22 games.
Believe it or not, I've never seen a goalie score live.
Marty Broder has the most goals scored by an NHL goalie with three.
Peke Rene was the most recent goalie to score in the 1920 season.
Who did it first, you might ask?
Well, that's actually a bit of debate.
There's really two types of goalie goals, at least so far.
As of now, no goalie has cleanly beat another goalie in net.
They'll either score on an empty net, as was the case in this game,
or there'll be a situation where the goalie was the last person
to touch the puck before a player puts it in their own net.
Billy Smith, the infamous Islanders goaltender, was the last person
to touch the puck when Rob Ramage put the puck into his own empty net
on a delayed penalty.
Now, that's a situation where he didn't really score the goal, obviously,
but he was credited with it.
Ron Hextall was the first goalie to actually score.
That was in 87, 88.
And he would score again in the 1989 playoffs.
I'm biased because I'm a Rangers fan and I watch all of their games,
but I think Shestercan could score an empty netter at some point.
He's the one who's really on my radar.
Last year, you could tell that he really wanted it.
At some point, the Rangers are going to be up two goals
and he's going to take a shot at an empty net.
I wonder whether a goalie will actually ever score on another goalie.
We've seen funny bounces before, but the thing is, you've got to shoot it
180 feet.
Really, Hextall, for me, will always be the king of shooting goalies.
Broder did have three, but two of his were actually from own goals.
And I mean, Hextall did it in the playoffs while shorthanded.
So anyway, that's all for now. Let me know what you think.
