Let's just move here and then retire eating this every single day.
Hey guys, Mike Chang here in Singapore.
Another reason I love this country so much is that the food here is so amazingly diverse.
Whatever you're in the mood for, you can find it and at pretty much any budget.
If you want to go to very upscale luxury places, it's here.
If you want to eat amazingly delicious food on a budget, it's here as well.
So today, we're going to go try out some of the best cheap eats here in Singapore.
This place is probably one of the most renowned best cheap eats places here in Singapore.
All the dishes are about a $1.20 Singapore dollars.
So about 70-ish cents US.
They close in about an hour.
When I got here, most of the items already sold out.
The only thing available was the peanut congee and the steamed rice noodles.
But the rice noodles look really fresh when I picked it up.
It's nice and soft.
Very soft, very good chewy texture.
Plenty of chilies on here.
Really spicy chili.
Nice aroma from the sesame and the scallions.
This is really good for $1.20 Singapore.
Texture, flavor, everything is extremely delicious.
This is one of the better chow fun I've had since coming to Singapore.
Chase that with some of the peanut congee.
Savory congee, very smooth, thick and rich.
The rice is all broken down as well.
The scallions are a nice touch.
The peanuts nice and crunchy.
There's one thing to get cheap eats.
There's another to find cheap eats that's really, really good.
And both these items are delicious.
I'm so sad I missed out on the bee hoon, the lo mein.
I heard so much good things about it.
I gotta come back another day.
I mean for about $1.50 US, two super yummy dishes.
I mean they're not large, but I can tell you right now, they are filling.
I've never really been to the opera center before.
I do have a list of the cheap eats I want to hit up today.
But see if there's anything else really good in here before we leave.
And before going to explore this food center a little more,
I just want to give a big thank you and shout out to the sponsor of this video,
Surfshark VPN.
Guys, I've been talking about online security.
I've been talking about VPN for several years now.
It's a tool that I stressed over and over again
that every single person needs to have and should utilize.
Right now, we all have so much information online.
And there's so many companies,
so many shady people out there trying to gain access to it.
And if you don't protect your digital information,
data brokers can gain access to it to sell it.
More people can gain access to your IP address
and go as far as track you wherever you are.
And that's actually happened to people I know,
especially now when everybody's out and about.
You're connected to different Wi-Fi hotspots everywhere,
like at cafes, airports.
A lot of times, these are not secure.
You'll even get messages saying they're not a secure hotspot.
And these are really easy access points for people to get your private information.
So what a VPN is, is a virtual private network.
What Surfshark VPN does is that it secures and encrypts your personal information
before it goes over the internet
so that people you don't want having access to your private info,
they won't have access to it.
Surfshark also has something called Surfshark Alert.
So when someone's trying to gain access to something like your email,
they're going to notify you right away.
Also on the entertainment side,
if you want to check out another country's Netflix catalog,
you can actually use Surfshark VPN to make streaming services like Netflix
think you're in a different country
so you have access to a whole different set of TV shows and movies.
Or if you're abroad like me,
you want to have access to your US streaming services,
you can use Surfshark VPN to make them think you're actually back in the US
so you get access to shows and movies that you actually pay for.
Even for something as basic as paying your bills,
I can't access certain bank websites or even major company websites
when I'm overseas.
It's really weird.
So I actually have to use Surfshark VPN to help them please take my money.
So if you want to give this a try, go to my link down below.
Use my promo code dumpling.
You'll get 83% off your order plus three additional months for free.
And try it out for 30 days.
If you don't like it for any reason, get your money back.
So just walking around right next to where I was sitting,
I see this place.
I think I'll be home for $1.20.
Whoa, you can get also a set with fried chicken and spam for $3.30.
That's a really good deal too.
All right, I might have just found a budget meal jackpot with this place.
$3.20 Singapore dollars.
So about $2.20 US for this full-on meal.
This is a lot of food.
Behold, little Crunchies, Spam, Chicken Wings, Sambal.
A hefty plate of food.
Same price.
I got this plate full of what I think is butterfly pea rice.
Spam, Crunchies, Billis, Chicken Wings.
Again, a hefty plate of food.
$3.20.
It's kind of good for me because I don't have that much cash on me right now.
I think I got about $10 left.
In most of these places, they only take cash.
Oh man, I think I might be full after this.
This is delicious looking and such a big portion.
I mean, look at this.
Spam.
They definitely put some sugar outside of the Spam.
It's got a nice little thin layer of sugary crust.
There's some little crumbly Crunchies over here.
Chicken Wing looks delicious.
Bihon looks fantastic.
And of course, all that delicious Sambal.
Mix it in.
Get all the noodles nice and involved in the Sambal.
Mmm.
Bihon's so good.
A little sweet.
Love these little Crunchies on the side.
Spam.
Oh, this thing goes so good with Spam.
Oh, I love fried Bihon.
Chicken Wing.
Mmm.
Freshly fried.
Crispy outer skin.
So nice and juicy.
It's a yummy plate of food.
It's delicious.
It's affordable.
It'll definitely fill most people up.
I just want to give this a try really quick.
I got a rice version.
It's got the same fried chicken Spam.
Also, bilis, peanuts on the side.
Sambal over that beautiful purple rice.
Mmm.
I love it so much.
I might like this more than the Bihon.
The rice is deliciously fragrant.
Sambal, spicy and deep.
The bilis is incredible.
Crunchy little fish.
Sometimes, some places I go to, the little fish is not crunchy.
It's kind of chewy and stale.
Not here.
Mmm.
The texture is so good.
Especially, you got these little fried crumblies on the side as well.
I would highly recommend this plate of food to anybody.
Top it all off.
Deliciously juicy fried chicken wing.
I don't know if you can get a better, more satisfying, more fulfilling plate of food
for three Singapore dollars.
It'll be hard.
It'll be really hard.
This is on a pedestal now.
What a great place.
This place wasn't on my list.
It's on top of my list now.
Walked a couple aisles down and just found this place.
This place is called Rice Garden.
A set meal is 270 Singapore dollars.
So, less than two dollars US.
And they're doing a good thing too because whenever you enjoy a full price meal,
they help subsidize meals sold to the elderly and special needs group.
Sounds great.
Let's get one.
I just asked the auntie to give me whatever she thinks the best veggie and meat combo.
So she gave me sprouts, cabbage.
She said this is really good.
She said this is the steamed pork.
It's very, very nice.
I don't think I've ever had something like that before.
But this whole place smells good.
It's a big portion of food.
Especially for, as of today's exchange rate, 180 US dollars.
Oh, that steamed pork is so good.
The whole thing is good.
She added some pork gravy to my rice as well.
And the steamed pork, that's amazing.
I don't know how they make this.
But it kind of tastes like a much, much, much higher quality piece of spam.
The meat breaks apart and it dissolves in your mouth.
It gets such a nice fatty texture and flavor that's holding your tongue.
And then chase it with a bite of sprouts.
This is very good value for your money.
I'm just thinking now, like, after I go back to the US,
I want to eat something at 6, 7, 8 o'clock in the morning for about $2.
I think I'm looking at a stickers bar.
That's why my goal is to eventually just move here.
I'm not even kidding.
I love this country.
I love the people.
I love the food.
I'll just move here and then retire eating this every single day.
I feel like this whole food center is very budget-friendly.
And the food is amazing.
There's so many other dishes I found that's around $3, $3.50.
I won't be able to even try them all today.
I still have my list I need to go to.
My list should have just been this food center.
This restaurant I'm at is called Goodwill Cafeteria.
As you can see, lunchtime lying out the door.
This place, you can also get a rice plate for $5 and get a free barley drink.
So I got a rice plate.
Also, I added a soup for additional $2.50.
This soup looks so good.
It's a pork bone soup with all this nice cartilage and tendon inside.
That soup is awesome.
I love a good bowl of pork bone broth.
This thing is piping hot.
Ah, so nice.
And the rice dish she gave me, I just asked her to give me whatever she thinks is really good.
I got some, looks like fish tofu.
That fish tofu is so good.
And I think she gave me some pork belly, stir-fried pork belly as well.
These are really good quality dishes.
Especially love that pork bone broth.
I need some chilies though.
Chili here is really good as well.
I love eating really saucy, good rice dishes.
And today, definitely had plenty of that super saucy, delicious dishes over rice.
And this place definitely feels like a meal that my grandma cooked.
I highly recommend this pork bone broth.
It's so comforting and soothing and nice.
And speaking of really saucy rice dishes, the next place I'm going to,
one of my favorite dishes in the world.
A little bit of a hike.
This is turning out to be a super hot day here in Singapore.
Trekked all the way to this food center for this particular dish, Lu Rou Fan.
Heard so much about this place.
Lu Rou Fan, of course, braised pork over rice.
As soon as I started mixing the pork in with the rice,
that unmistakable umami-filled aroma just jumped out of the bowl
and roundhouse kicked me in the face.
You smell that subtly sweet of the fat from the braised pork
intermingling with every single grain of rice.
This is one of my all-time favorite rice dishes anywhere.
And this place really does it justice.
Wow, this is a really good bowl of Lu Rou Fan.
The cucumbers are delicious as well.
So a pretty good size bowl of this.
Cucumbers, eggs, chilies, $3.50 Singapore dollars.
And when you have a really good bowl of this,
the fat from the pork is going to dissolve into the rice.
Changing the color, the flavor, the aroma of the rice.
It's going to be porky, fatty, velvety.
Rich and intense.
And that is what I love about Lu Rou Fan.
By the way, this egg is absolutely perfect.
The silkiness from the egg yolk mixed in
with all that melted pork fat inside the rice
creates a flavor that is almost just too much.
One word, xiang.
Super xiang.
That means it's just so fragrant.
I mean, eating this, you're not merely just tasting this with your tongue.
It's feeding all your senses.
You're seeing the fat melt.
You're smelling it.
Of course, you eat it.
It's borderline overwhelming.
And that's what makes it so good.
You gotta come and try this.
Really amazing dish.
Also, they give me a side of their salt and pepper chicken.
Mmm.
Chicken's delicious too.
It's fried so nicely on the outside.
But this is some OMG level stuff.
I love it so much.
This is definitely worth the sweaty hot walk down here.
Ah, this next place I am so excited about
and haven't been here for years.
Sunggye Roll Laksa.
Three dollars a bowl.
Some of the best laksa you'll find anywhere.
Sunggye Roll.
Noodles are cut up.
So you just need a spoon.
No chopsticks required.
Some cacos in there.
Sprouts.
Fish tofu.
Some of the richest creamy-ish, coconutty-ish laksa broth you'll find anywhere.
Every single bite.
All sorts of different texture in here.
From the chewy noodles and the fish tofu
to the crunchy sprouts and the poppin' sweet cacos
with that spicy coconutty broth.
Tying it all together.
Three dollars a bowl.
Usually, I'll come here and order three bowls.
But when you're talking about inexpensive eats
that will knock your socks off.
Cannot exclude this.
Even more appropriate on a rainy day.
Even though a rainy day in Singapore is more like a steamy hot sauna rain.
So, it counts.
Every time I come here, it's just gone too soon.
Alright, one more place I gotta try.
Last place I am at.
It's right at one of the best Thai restaurants here in Singapore.
And you get a lot of value for your money here.
What they're trying to promote here is healthy Thai food
that also tastes amazing.
First of all, this is a small bowl of their pork collagen broth
which is stewed for over 12 hours.
And this thing?
Oh, it's so good.
There's so much flavor in this broth.
It's so porky and slightly gelatinous-y.
This broth is bomb.
Got the cleanest, porkiest flavor.
Stewed for 12 hours.
Yeah, you can definitely taste all that.
Last four instant noodles are here as well.
Just because these noodles probably do the best
at soaking up all that flavorful broth.
Roasted pork.
Oh, it's so good.
It's fatty.
It's a little snappy as well.
And they marinate that for 24 hours before it's cooked.
Wow, that's delicious.
That pork jaw is something special.
There's also pork meatballs in here as well
along with some bok choy and eggs, tomatoes.
The broth and the pork jaw are definitely the stars of this bowl.
I just got a small bowl for five Singapore dollars.
It's a tasting bowl.
And those noodles definitely soaked up that delicious broth.
This is 100% worthy a try if you're ever in Singapore.
This next dish I got looks incredible.
This is their premium tom yum.
Look at this.
Four giant prawns with enoki mushrooms,
some lettuce and rice noodles inside.
There's some minced pork in here as well.
Mushrooms, onions, lemongrass.
This is a hefty bowl of tom yum noodle soup.
12 Singapore dollars, so under nine bucks.
Oh, that is good.
Spicy, sour, a little sweet.
And she warned me this is just Singapore spicy.
It's not really Thai spicy.
So I want a Thai spicy.
She can make that happen as well.
All that nice, rich, sour tom yum flavor has definitely penetrated into these noodles.
There's some meatballs here as well.
And of course, deliciously sweet prawns.
Like you see here, it's a lot of food.
This will definitely leave you satisfied.
It's a lot more tomatoey than a lot of the tom yum I'm used to.
Also tastes much healthier and less artificial.
So today I went to a lot of places that serves amazingly delicious food at a really good price point.
And these places are literally everywhere around Singapore.
Again, another reason why I love this place and why I consider it one of the best food countries in the world.
And hopefully this video has been helpful to you guys.
All the places I went to, of course, listed down below for you.
As always, thank you all so much for watching.
Until we eat again, see you later.
