Well after several hours of driving today was about 5 hours and I've arrived in Riga again in Latvia which is where my trip from the Baltic States ends
He returned the car at the airport and took a Volt I don't know if you remember that here in Riga I took a Volt it was also in Lithuania I think in Estonia as well but Estonia also has Uber
I took a Volt to the center to the hotel where I'm staying tonight I took it just a few minutes ago
Well this is the room As you can see a backpacker's carpet Here is the desk here is a menu the mirror a velvet chair Very good
A king-size bed The TV is here A robe I just can't stay in a hotel if it doesn't have a robe I think it's a minimum I think it's a human rights issue and things like that
Then there's part of the minibar here More minibar here And the bathroom is here As you can see the bathtub Here is the huge mirror There's also a scale and another robe around here
So nothing else quite complete for a backpacker I mean This is the room and this I don't know what it is Oh it's a little light Very good
It's like an island in the middle of the river but it takes a quarter of an hour by car if you want to walk it takes almost two hours so it's really only worth coming to see the antenna So people don't usually come specifically for that
I came because I really wanted to fly the drone here see the views and watch the sunset with the tower in the middle
I'm on my way my last day here in the Baltic republics I'm finishing with stars and I'm at the hotel It's that building over there where I'm staying Now I'm where I told you the Central Park of Riga
Yes it's a nice little park where people come here to run walk you know and there's a small fountain So let's start here
Next to the park is the Statue of Liberty a statue that does look like the one in New York It is a statue that was erected here in 1935 to commemorate Latvia's independence and is a very important site for Latvians
And that's also there right in the middle of the park dividing it along the road that runs through the middle
These cities such as Tallinn Riga Vilnius are very important because they were medieval cities where as you saw in Tallinn quite a lot of the wall's part is still preserved
Here in Riga there is somewhat less remaining we are in an area where there was once a wall here when it was the medieval quarter in the 13th century but it now preserves almost nothing
There is a section of these entrance gates to the fortifications that are located there now I will approach
And now this area which you can see has these little mounds of earth and such these are what are called Jeykows Barracks which were barracks used when the entire area was still part of the Soviet Union
This street I'm walking on which was once the barracks is all that remains of that area which has now been converted entirely into restaurants and boutiques
In fact if you look here this is part of the old medieval wall and then the street is divided by the wall and what were the barracks now converted as I mentioned to you
This door I am currently passing through is the Swedish door the one I mentioned to you which is the remaining entrance of what was the walled area
And once here you enter the narrow alleys which are a delight because they are these narrow streets that are still cobblestone
And although the medieval style is no longer preserved at least they have not turned it into a super-modern city
Here behind me is the Riga Cathedral a cathedral that was started to be built in the 13th century and had many expansions in the early 16th century
Although most of the modifications were made in 1914 meaning that the entire structure is actually quite modern
The coolest thing here is that the cathedral is in a huge square and I think maybe traffic can't pass through here because I don't see any cars going through
And this place also fills up in the afternoons with all the little restaurants in the area so it's also a spot where a really cool atmosphere is generated
Now I am in front of the Three Brothers which are three houses built between the 15th and 17th centuries
This is the oldest one located at number XVII followed by the one at XIX and then the one at XXI
Then this is from the 15th century and has the characteristic that they are joined by the inside and the one from the 15th century still retains much of its original decorations
They are the oldest three connected buildings in the whole city and it's really something because there's some
That part there is somewhat twisted the oldest one I don't know if you can visit it I don't see anyone entering so I don't know if that option is available
In fact it has the construction date written there on the facade from the 17th century along with the other two
Now I am certainly in the most important square here in Riga which is the town hall square where one side the town hall is obviously located
Then here is the House of the Black Heads which is surely the most important and most well-known building in this area
Its original construction dates back to the 13th century but during World War II the entire area was destroyed and all these buildings had to be rebuilt
Then they are from 1996-97 so they are very modern but they are definitely very characteristic and they are really cool and a very beautiful place
